Tidal Flight says its proposed Polaris hybrid-electric amphibious aircraft could burn 85% less fuel than comparable existing aircraft over typical stage lengths. That is a developer-reported performance claim, not a result established by full-scale flight testing in the available public records. The sources do not identify a specific comparison aircraft or publish the mission data and test method behind the figure.
What the 85% figure does—and does not—mean
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2025 SBIR award record describes the target as “85% lower fuel burn than existing aircraft over typical stage lengths.” Tidal Flight’s company announcement frames it as a comparison with comparable existing seaplanes. In April 2026, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership described 85% less fuel as an expected outcome in its development announcement.

Those descriptions establish the claim’s broad comparison basis, but not a reproducible head-to-head result. The cited materials do not name a comparator aircraft, specify fuel-burn units or a complete mission profile, or provide an independent test protocol. “85% lower fuel burn” therefore should be read as Tidal’s expected performance against a broad class of existing aircraft on typical routes—not as a measured result for every flight, payload, or route.
Fuel burn is not the same as lifecycle emissions. The claim alone does not establish an 85% reduction in carbon emissions or environmental impact.

How Polaris is designed to use less fuel
Polaris is a clean-sheet composite monohull amphibian under development by Tidal Flight for coastal and regional travel, with defense applications also described. The SBIR abstract characterizes its propulsion as a plug-in serial hybrid: compression-ignition engines drive generators, while batteries and electric motors power twin propellers.
Tidal says the architecture is intended to allow electric takeoffs, landings, harbor operations, and short-hop flights. The hybrid system is described as not requiring charging infrastructure. These are design and program claims in the award abstract, not demonstrated operating capabilities of a completed passenger aircraft.
The company has also claimed about 20 dB lower takeoff noise than comparable seaplanes. The Virginia development announcement reports an expected 40% reduction in operating costs. Neither figure is an independently verified operating result in the cited material.
Polaris specifications and range depend on the mission
Published figures describe different conditions, so they should not be treated as a single settled performance specification.

| 2025 SBIR award abstract | 12,500 lb aircraft; 3,300 lb useful load; maximum range above 1,750 nautical miles | The cited passage does not state the payload condition for that maximum-range figure. |
| New Atlas, February 13, 2025 | 59 ft (18 m) wingspan; 12,500 lb takeoff weight; 162-knot cruise speed; 1,034-nautical-mile range | The reported range is with a one-tonne payload. |
| Virginia Economic Development Partnership, April 2026 | Designed for flights of 100–500 miles and nine to 12 passengers | This is a project description of intended missions, not proof of in-service capability. |
The maximum-range and one-tonne-payload figures have different stated conditions; the cited sources do not reconcile them. A useful comparison with another aircraft would need the same route, payload, reserves, and operating assumptions.
New Atlas reported that the planned aircraft was designed for jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel, and mentioned hydrogen or all-battery versions as possible future configurations. Those possibilities are not evidence of current certified capability.

The SBA award record lists Tidal Flight, Inc. as the recipient of a 2025 U.S. Department of Defense Phase II award through the Air Force branch. The award amount is $1,248,916, with a listed performance period from August 25, 2025, through May 23, 2027. The abstract says the work includes extending a powertrain test stand into an integrated aircraft test unit, developing controls and power-management systems, and assessing fault tolerance and performance against Air Force mission profiles.
In April 2026, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership said Tidal planned a $538,000 expansion into 13,000 square feet of hangar space at Chesapeake Regional Airport and intended to research, develop, and test full-scale subsystems. These records describe ongoing development; they do not establish a full-size Polaris first flight, certification, deliveries, or passenger service.
What operator letters of intent indicate
Tidal announced a letter of intent with Coastal Seaplanes, which has described plans for Mid-Atlantic regional routes. WingTips announced an LOI concerning 20 aircraft, valued by the companies at more than $100 million. New Atlas reported a similar 20-aircraft LOI with Tropic Ocean Airways. These announcements point to prospective operator interest and route planning, not completed purchases, deliveries, or service commencement.
For readers evaluating the aircraft as a future regional option, the meaningful comparison is broader than fuel burn: passenger and baggage payload, route-specific range, access to water and runways, operating and maintenance costs—including saltwater corrosion—and the aircraft’s certification and service maturity all matter. The available announcements do not provide a complete head-to-head dataset on those measures.
