Thule Outset Hitch Tent: Does It Really Bring Rooftop Camping to Ground Level?

The Thule Outset brings rooftop-tent comfort to a low, hitch-mounted platform—but it does not sleep on the ground. Here is how its detachable design, vehicle requirements, comfort, price, and reattachment process affect real-world camping.

The Thule Outset is a detachable hitch-mounted tent, not a conventional rooftop tent and not a ground tent. U.S. model 901530 attaches to a vehicle’s 2-inch receiver, unfolds onto an elevated platform roughly two feet above the ground, and can be released at camp so the vehicle can drive away. That gives it the best parts of both categories: a built-in mattress, raised sleeping area, and no ladder, plus the ability to leave the tent behind for a day trip.

It also has a major catch: the Outset costs $4,699.95, weighs 163 pounds before occupants or luggage, occupies the vehicle’s receiver, and independent testing found that reconnecting it to the hitch is much harder than detaching it. Its three-person rating is also optimistic for three adults. The Outset makes the most sense for premium drive-in campers who value low access, roof-free vehicle space, and occasional campsite separation more than low cost or maximum sleeping room.

In other words, the headline that it drops rooftop car camping to ground is only partly accurate. It drops the entry height and the vehicle-mounted sleeping arrangement closer to the ground; you still sleep on a raised, rigid platform rather than directly on the campsite.

What the Thule Outset actually is

The Thule Outset is a rear-mounted car tent that attaches to a tow hitch or receiver. Thule calls it a towbar-mounted tent in Europe and a hitch-mounted car tent in the United States. The U.S. version is model 901530; European versions include models 901520 and 901560, so European specifications and prices should not be copied into a U.S. buying guide.

WildFinder Rooftop Tent, Hard Shell Roof Top Tent for Jeep SUV Truck Van
  • 100% ALUMINUM ALLOY MATERIAL: Made of high quality aircraft grade aluminum, not easy to aging and thermal expansion and contraction, super durable, can be used for many years. If it is made of plastic, it is easy to leak after winter and summer seasons.
  • STAINLESS STEEL AIR PRESSURE LEVER + POLYESTER FABRIC: Polyester fabric is more comfortable, breathable and waterproof. Strong blackout and privacy. Stainless steel material air pressure rod, durable, will not rust, long service life.
  • RECESSED MARINE PAD + CONDENSATION PAD + COMFORT MATTRESS: the recessed marine pad reduces humidity. The condensation pad prevents water vapor from forming water droplets due to air pressure and temperature difference. 5cm non-deforming mattress provides you with a quality and comfortable resting environment.
  • COMPLETE ACCESSORIES FOR CAMPING: We are equipped with a 7.5 FT Telescoping Ladder, Ladder Organizer, Organizer Bag x10, LED Strip, Shoe Organizer x2, Mesh Windows x3, Mattress x2, and Built-in Mattress x1. These accessories can give you a better camping and outdoor experience. (Luggage Crossbar is not included.)
  • WATERPROOF/SUNPROOF/WINDPROOF/SNOWPROOF:Level 6 Windproof; 99.99% Sun Protection; 5000 MM Rainproof; Level 4 Heavy Snow Protection.

In transit, the Outset is a large folded carrier protected by a travel cover. At camp, it uses adjustable legs and a rigid platform to support an integrated tent and mattress. When it is detached, the platform and legs carry the load rather than the vehicle’s roof or hitch.

That produces two operating modes:

  • Attached mode: the Outset remains connected to the receiver while its legs support the rear portion. The tent can be tilted to provide access to the vehicle’s rear compartment.
  • Detached camp mode: the tent is released from the hitch and remains standing on its own platform and legs. Thule says it can be locked at the campsite, allowing the vehicle to leave.

Detachable does not mean portable in the way a normal ground tent is portable. The vehicle must still reach the place where the Outset will be deployed. Independent testing found that the platform cannot be fully assembled and the tent cannot be deployed without access to the hitch arrangement. A tent pad down a trail or far from the parking area is therefore not a practical Outset site.

Thule presented the product as a new category when it announced the launch, including a company claim that it was the first towbar-mounted tent of its kind. That is Thule’s positioning, not an independently established industry award or fact. The product itself, however, is a real U.S.-market item rather than a concept vehicle accessory.

U.S. price, model, and specifications

The 160- versus 163-pound difference is minor, but it matters when checking a hitch rating. Use the current product-page figure of 163 pounds for U.S. planning, and treat the manual’s 160-pound figure as a slightly different rounded or version-specific specification. Neither number includes people, bedding, or other equipment.

Do not confuse the 163-pound travel load with the 662-pound static capacity. The first is the load the vehicle and receiver must carry while driving. The second applies when the deployed tent is supported by its platform and legs. A receiver rated for a 662-pound static load does not automatically permit a 662-pound moving load.

How the detachable setup works

The Outset is designed to be installed and deployed by one person, according to Thule, but that claim depends on the user’s strength, the terrain, hitch geometry, and familiarity with the mechanism. The official U.S. installation and safety manual is the authority for the exact locking, clamping, lighting, and leg procedures.

Basic setup sequence

  1. Park where the vehicle can remain stable and reach the intended tent location. Confirm receiver size, hitch rating, clearance, exhaust position, and rear-access requirements.
  2. Roll the folded Outset toward the vehicle using its integrated wheels.
  3. Align the carrier with the 2-inch receiver and attach the hitch mechanism.
  4. Lock and clamp the carrier as shown in the U.S. instructions. Do not rely only on the fact that the carrier appears to be seated.
  5. Connect the vehicle-lighting plug and verify that the rear lights work.
  6. Remove the travel cover.
  7. Deploy the support legs and platform components, then adjust the legs until the sleeping platform is stable and reasonably level.
  8. Unlatch and unfold the tent.
  9. Secure the interior clips and support structure.
  10. Add and secure the rain cover when conditions require it.
  11. Walk around the platform and confirm that the legs, hitch connection, tent structure, and level are correct before anyone climbs inside.

Thule markets setup as taking minutes. That is a reasonable description after the owner has learned the mechanism, but it should not be treated as a first-use guarantee. In Treeline Review’s five-night U.S. field test, first assembly in a parking lot took approximately 20 minutes; after the tester understood the process, later setups took only a few minutes. An etrailer product expert response also describes a solo unhitched setup in under 10 minutes, although that is a retailer Q&A rather than a controlled test.

Detaching at camp

Once the Outset is deployed and supported by its legs, detachment is relatively straightforward in the independent test. The tent’s latch is released so the wheels reach the ground, and the lever is operated to disconnect the carrier from the receiver. The vehicle can then be driven away while the tent remains in place. Thule says the detached tent can be locked at camp, but that should be understood as a security feature rather than a theft-proof guarantee.

Reattaching is the weak point

The important distinction is that detaching is easier than reattaching. Treeline reported that getting the deployed tent back into alignment with the hitch attachment could require wrestling the structure into position, patience, and considerable strength. That changes how the Outset should be used:

  • If you set up once and leave the tent attached for most of a trip, the inconvenience may be minor.
  • If you plan to detach every morning, drive away, and reconnect every evening, the reattachment process could erase much of the product’s convenience.

The travel cover is another ownership annoyance. It protects the folded tent from road grime, mud, and moisture, but Treeline found it tight and difficult to zip, especially in freezing conditions.

Will the Outset fit your vehicle?

A 2-inch receiver is necessary, but it is not enough. A vehicle can have the right receiver opening and still be unsuitable because of tongue weight, geometry, exhaust placement, tailgate behavior, or rear-camera interference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this compatibility checklist

  • Receiver size: The U.S. Outset requires a 2-inch receiver. It is not intended for a 1¼-inch receiver. Do not use an adapter as a substitute for a properly rated 2-inch setup.
  • Hitch and vehicle rating: The U.S. manual lists a maximum hitch load of 163 lb / 74 kg for the carrier. Check both the vehicle’s owner manual and the hitch manufacturer’s rating; the lower applicable rating governs. The vehicle’s tow rating is not the same as its tongue-weight rating.
  • Rear axle-to-receiver distance: Thule does not recommend the product for vehicles with more than 7.5 ft / 230 cm between the rear wheel axle and receiver.
  • Receiver height: Independent testing reported a recommended hitch height of approximately 9 to 20.8 in. Because height affects leveling and attachment, confirm the measurement against the current manual or a Thule dealer for the specific vehicle.
  • Exhaust clearance: Hot exhaust pipes or gases can damage the carrier. Some vehicles may need an exhaust extension, particularly when the exhaust exits close to or toward the hitch.
  • Automatic tailgate: Disable automatic hatch or tailgate opening while the carrier is installed. Open the rear compartment manually so the door does not strike the Outset.
  • Lighting and license plate: Connect and test the carrier’s lighting before driving. Local law may require an additional license plate, and requirements vary by jurisdiction.
  • Rear visibility and electronics: Measure what the folded carrier blocks. Treeline’s tester reported that the Outset obstructed the backup camera and part of the rear window. Connecting the lighting plug also caused that vehicle to interpret the setup as a trailer and disable blind-spot indicators. Your vehicle may behave differently, but this is a compatibility question worth testing before purchase.
  • Receiver access: The Outset uses the rear receiver, so plan on losing the ability to use another hitch-mounted accessory at the same time unless Thule specifically approves the arrangement.

Before buying, obtain the actual hitch rating, measure the receiver height and axle-to-hitch distance, inspect the exhaust path, and test the tailgate and camera behavior. The phrase fits vehicles with a 2-inch hitch is too broad to be a safe buying rule.

What it is like to sleep in

Comfort is the Outset’s strongest argument

The integrated 2.7-inch mattress avoids the thin, separate sleeping pads that are common in ground camping. Treeline described the sleeping experience as exceptionally comfortable compared with ordinary pads, while T3 found the interior comfortable and spacious for one person. The elevated platform also keeps the sleeper away from wet ground, rocks, and many insects without requiring a roof ladder.

Three people is a rating, not a roomy layout

Thule rates the Outset for three people, but the sleeping area is only 88.6 by 52.8 in. That is a narrow bed for three adults. T3 said three adults would struggle, and Treeline’s practical description was closer to two people plus a dog or small child.

Think of the capacity this way:

  • One adult: generous room for sleeping and gear.
  • Two adults: the most credible full-size use case.
  • Two adults and a small child or dog: possible, but dependent on sleeping habits and gear management.
  • Three adults: technically within the stated rating, but cramped rather than comfortable.

Low access is more important than the phrase ground-level

The sleeping platform sits approximately two feet above the ground, with a peak interior height of 44.5 in. That is high enough to avoid ground-level sleeping but low enough to eliminate a rooftop-tent ladder. It is easier for children and dogs to enter, more convenient for nighttime exits, and potentially more manageable for people who have difficulty climbing onto a vehicle roof.

Rooftop Tent Hard Shell with Winter Insulation for 4-Season Camping
  • High quality aluminum alloy material:Made of high quality aircraft grade aluminum, not easy to aging and thermal expansion and contraction, super durable, exceptional load-bearing capacity. If it's made of plastic, easy to aging and nondurable.
  • Quick opening and closing: The tent is equipped with 4 high-strength hydraulic support rods, which provide strong support and ensure smooth opening and closing operations, providing a more convenient user experience.
  • Disassemble winer thermal liner: Provides better insulation and windproof performance, keeping you warm and comfortable even when camping in winter, and is easy to disassemble, making it a true all-weather rooftop tent.
  • Waterrproof Sunproof Windproof:The tent is made of 320G polyester with a blackout coating. It offers 5000 mm water resistance, 99% sun protection, and wind resistance up to grade 6,4 windows for optimal airflow, with each window equipped with both mesh layer and windproof layer. This ensures excellent ventilation during summer.
  • Upgrade with flocked lining floor:Compared with ordinary floor, the flocked lining floor can avoid condensation caused by air pressure and temperature difference, ensuring the mattress is dry. It provides you with a quality and comfortable resting environment.

Ventilation, condensation, and weather

The large doors and windows have mesh and fabric layers that allow airflow, privacy, and insect protection to be adjusted. Treeline reported good ventilation and little condensation during testing. The manual nevertheless says interior moisture is likely to be condensation, recommends leaving windows or vents open, and requires the tent to be dried thoroughly before storage.

Thule lists the Outset for all seasons and says its tents undergo rain, wind, climate-cycle, shaker-table, and crash testing. Those are manufacturer-described test categories, not a published guarantee that the tent is suitable for every storm, snow load, or alpine environment. Thule’s public materials do not provide a universal severe-weather or snow-load rating. The manual gives an operating-temperature range of approximately −20°F to 140°F / −30°C to 60°C, but a temperature range is not a wind or snow-safety rating.

Follow the manual’s safety rules:

  • Do not use fuel-burning or oxygen-consuming appliances inside or near the tent.
  • Do not cook or use heating devices inside.
  • Keep the tent at least 19 ft / 6 m from a campfire or other flame source.
  • Do not leave children unattended inside.

Leveling and campsite limits

The adjustable legs give the Outset an advantage over a rooftop tent. Small bumps, holes, and modest angles can be corrected by adjusting the platform independently of the vehicle. That helps produce a flatter sleeping surface even when the vehicle is not perfectly level.

It is not a license to use any campsite. A severe slope can make the hitch connection and platform difficult to align, and the vehicle must still reach the location before the tent can be deployed. Choose a reasonably stable, level site first; use the legs for fine adjustment rather than trying to make an unsuitable site safe. The manual includes the manufacturer’s terrain and stability instructions. Anecdotal user reports have raised concerns about leveling on steep or very uneven ground, but those reports are not enough to establish a product defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What driving with it attached is really like

The Outset is not a trailer, but it is a substantial rear-mounted load. Thule’s U.S. instructions say:

  • Do not drive while the tent is deployed.
  • Do not exceed 80 mph / 130 km/h, or the lower applicable speed limit.
  • Cross speed bumps at no more than 6.2 mph / 10 km/h.
  • Inspect the carrier after the first 50 km / approximately 31 miles and at regular intervals afterward.
  • On rough terrain, inspect the cover every two hours.
  • Remove the carrier before entering an automatic car wash.

Expect the vehicle to be longer and harder to reverse. Rear visibility, braking, handling, and sensitivity to crosswinds can change. Check that the carrier’s tilt mechanism is locked in its travel position, and pay special attention to exhaust heat and the lighting connection.

Thule claims that positioning the tent at the rear creates little impact on fuel economy or battery range compared with a rooftop tent. That is a manufacturer claim. The independent coverage reviewed for this article did not provide controlled before-and-after fuel-economy or EV-range measurements, so it should not be presented as an independently proven zero-impact result.

A realistic day-trip workflow

The Outset’s main lifestyle promise is vehicle freedom. A typical trip would look like this:

  1. Drive to a suitable drive-in campsite with the folded, covered tent attached.
  2. Deploy and level the platform, then unfold the tent.
  3. Release the hitch connection while the platform and legs support the tent.
  4. Lock the tent at camp if appropriate.
  5. Drive the vehicle away for supplies, trail access, or sightseeing.
  6. Return to the exact campsite area and work the tent back into alignment with the hitch.
  7. Reconnect, secure the mechanism, and pack the tent down before leaving for good.

This is genuinely more flexible than a rooftop tent, which normally keeps the vehicle tied to the campsite. But the flexibility is most valuable when the tent is detached only occasionally. Daily detachment and reattachment are not the Outset’s strongest use case because the second half of that process can be awkward.

Storage and ownership

Compared with a rooftop tent, the Outset can be removed from the vehicle without lifting a heavy shell onto the roof. It does not create the same garage-height problem when it is not mounted, and it can stay off the vehicle during the workweek. Its folding shape may also be easier to store vertically than some rooftop tents.

The trade-off is a 160- to 163-pound object that is still large when folded. Before buying, measure:

  • Garage door height and width.
  • The floor area needed for the 56.8 × 29 × 35-in folded package.
  • The route from the vehicle to the storage location.
  • Whether you can safely roll and maneuver the carrier.
  • Whether it can be kept dry during and after wet-weather trips.

The tent should be dried completely before it is closed and stored, and the manual advises protecting it from prolonged direct sunlight. Closing it wet invites mold and mildew. The tight travel cover may make that final packing step particularly frustrating in cold or damp conditions.

Accessories and the real purchase price

Thule’s U.S. page lists these compatible accessories and prices, although they are subject to change:

Accessory Listed price What it adds
Fitted sheet $79.95 Fitted bedding for the integrated mattress
Anti-condensation mat $189.95 Additional moisture-management equipment
Starset tarp $399.95 Weather-protected living space; can also be used independently
Outset organizer $129.95 Waterproof compartments and mesh pockets
OutLand Box Awning $899.95 More substantial covered outdoor space

At those listed prices, buying all five would add $1,699.75 before tax or shipping, taking the package to roughly $6,399.70. Most buyers do not need every accessory, but the calculation shows how quickly an already expensive system grows.

The Outset organizer must be emptied before the tent is folded. The Starset tarp adds living space and can be used with the Outset or on its own. These accessories address real limitations, but they do not change the tent’s sleeping capacity or solve the reattachment issue.

Against another Thule tent

A rooftop tent such as the Thule Approach M provides a useful internal comparison. It offers premium tent comfort at a substantially lower listed price than the Outset, but it requires roof mounting and a ladder. Thule’s current U.S. rooftop-tent range also includes the Approach S and Foothill, which may be more appropriate if the buyer values price, weight, or a smaller roof footprint over low access.

The Outset is not universally better than a rooftop tent. It is paying for a different set of compromises: the roof remains available for bikes, kayaks, or a cargo box; the entrance is low; and the tent can remain at camp while the vehicle leaves. A rooftop tent usually wins on simplicity after installation, compactness around the vehicle, and the ability to camp where the vehicle can reach but the Outset’s rear platform cannot be leveled comfortably.

Who should buy the Thule Outset?

Buy it if:

  • You want rooftop-tent comfort but do not want a ladder or roof access.
  • You camp at drive-in or dispersed sites and often make day trips after setting up.
  • You camp with a dog, child, or someone who benefits from a low entrance.
  • You need to keep the vehicle roof free for bikes, kayaks, a roof box, or other cargo.
  • Your vehicle has a properly rated 2-inch receiver and passes the geometry, exhaust, tailgate, and visibility checks.
  • You are willing to pay a premium for an integrated mattress, platform, hitch hardware, and a specialized campsite workflow.
  • You expect to leave it attached for most of a trip or detach it only occasionally.

Skip it if:

  • You mainly use walk-in campsites or need to carry the tent away from the parking area.
  • You need comfortable sleeping space for three adults.
  • You want a lightweight, inexpensive, or compact tent.
  • Your vehicle has a 1¼-inch receiver or insufficient tongue-weight capacity.
  • You dislike storing bulky equipment or cannot keep it dry.
  • You expect to reconnect it every day after driving away from camp.
  • You already sleep comfortably inside the vehicle.
  • You would rather put nearly $4,700 toward a trailer, camper conversion, or complete ground-camping system.
  • You mainly backpack or hike away from the vehicle.

What the $4,700 premium buys

The Outset’s price is not justified by sleeping space alone. A good ground tent and mattress can provide more room for far less money, while a rooftop tent can offer similar elevated comfort at a lower listed price. The Outset’s premium pays for the combination of:

  • An integrated rigid sleeping platform.
  • A built-in mattress.
  • Hitch attachment and lighting hardware.
  • Low, ladder-free access.
  • The ability to leave the vehicle without dismantling the tent.
  • A roof-free vehicle configuration.
  • Thule’s product ecosystem and stated testing program.

It does not buy a large family bedroom, true walk-away portability, effortless repeated reattachment, or trailer-like living space. The right value question is therefore not whether it is cheaper than every way to camp. It is whether low access and occasional campsite separation are worth the cost, weight, receiver restrictions, and rear-visibility compromises for your trips.

Bottom line

The Thule Outset is a clever, genuinely different camping system: a hitch-mounted tent that gives you a raised mattress without a rooftop ladder and lets the vehicle leave camp. It is most compelling for premium drive-in campers, dog owners, people with mobility concerns, and travelers who need their vehicle during the day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is less compelling as a universal replacement for a rooftop tent or ground tent. The U.S. 901530 requires a properly rated 2-inch receiver, weighs 163 pounds, may interfere with cameras and driver-assistance systems, and costs $4,699.95 before accessories. Independent testing also makes the crucial point that detaching is easy enough, while reattaching can be physically demanding. Treat it as a specialized comfort-and-accessibility purchase—not as a cheap ground tent or a fully portable campsite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Thule Outset sleep directly on the ground?

No. It unfolds onto a rigid platform supported by adjustable legs, with the sleeping surface roughly two feet above the ground. The low height removes the rooftop-tent ladder but does not make it a ground-level sleeping tent.

Can I use the Thule Outset with any 2-inch hitch?

No. The U.S. model requires a 2-inch receiver, but buyers must also verify the vehicle and hitch rating, the approximately 163-pound travel load, receiver height, axle-to-hitch distance, exhaust clearance, tailgate operation, lighting, license-plate requirements, and rear-camera visibility. The lower vehicle or hitch rating governs.

Can I drive away and leave the Outset set up?

Yes. Once it is deployed and supported by its platform and legs, the Outset can be detached so the vehicle can leave. It is not a walk-in portable tent, however: the vehicle must reach the location where the tent is initially deployed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Thule Outset really a three-person tent?

Thule rates it for three people, but its 88.6-by-52.8-inch sleeping footprint is narrow for three adults. Independent reviewers found it more realistic for two adults, or two adults plus a small child or dog.

How long does the Outset take to set up?

Thule markets one-person setup in minutes. Independent U.S. testing took about 20 minutes for first assembly and only a few minutes after the process was learned. Reattaching the tent to the hitch after detachment was substantially more difficult than setting it up or taking it off.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Thule Outset is best understood as a premium, detachable rear-mounted tent for drive-in camping—not a ground tent and not simply a rooftop tent moved lower. It earns its high price through ladder-free access, an integrated mattress, roof-free vehicle space, and the ability to leave camp without dismantling. If you need low-cost portability, room for three adults, or frequent daily reconnection, a ground tent, vehicle platform, rooftop tent, or small trailer is likely a better fit.
