There is no defensible 15-car ranking in the available production records. These three examples show why: the Porsche 959 is a low-volume series-production car, the Ferrari 288 GTO is an officially identified limited edition, and the Lamborghini Countach Evoluzione is a one-off technology concept—not a customer production car. Those are different kinds of rarity, not entries on one comparable scale.
What counts as rare?
Build count, customer availability and obscurity are separate measures. A production figure for a road car cannot be ranked directly against a prototype that was never offered to customers. The examples below are therefore grouped by status, not ordered from rarest to least rare. Counts are included only where the cited source supports the specific figure.
Low-volume series-production car
Porsche 959
Porsche says 292 examples were built in series production from 1987 to 1988. That makes the 959 a documented low-volume road car of the period. The figure is Porsche’s production total for the 959; it is not a comparison proving that the car was among the absolute rarest supercars of the decade.
Limited-edition supercar
Ferrari 288 GTO
Ferrari describes the 288 GTO as “the very first limited edition car in Ferrari history.” The company’s history also places the car in the context of Group B rules and specifies a 2.855-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 400 hp. The cited Ferrari page does not give a total production figure, so a build count cannot be responsibly attached to it here.

One-off technology concept
Lamborghini Countach Evoluzione
Lamborghini identifies the Countach Evoluzione as a concept associated with the company’s development of composite materials. A specialist secondary production table lists one example and describes it as a factory special and prototype for carbon-fiber chassis testing. That one-off figure belongs to the specialist source, not Lamborghini’s official milestones page; it describes a technology prototype, not a series-production customer car.
The Countach’s timeline also crosses the decade boundary: Lamborghini’s official chronology says it gave way to the Diablo in 1990. The Evoluzione is best understood as part of the Countach’s later development story, not as evidence that every Countach variant began in the 1980s.

Why these cars resist a simple ranking
- Build count: The 959 has an official series-production total; the cited Ferrari page supplies no 288 GTO total; the Evoluzione’s one-example figure comes from a specialist secondary source.
- Production status: The 959 is series-produced, the 288 GTO is a limited-edition road car, and the Evoluzione is a prototype concept.
- Recognition: Being little known is not the same as having a low build count. No comparative survey establishes which 1980s supercars are least recognized by enthusiasts.
So “rarest” depends on the question: fewest documented customer cars, most unusual factory experiment, or least familiar name. A rigorous 15-car numerical ranking would need comparable, variant-specific production records across all eligible cars.
