Rather than a conventional fabric pop-top, it combines an oversized removable roof structure, an interior sleeping loft and a hatch from the cabin. New Atlas described the concept as designed to remain raised while driving, but that is not independent road-safety guidance or confirmation that the roof is a production option.
What makes the SpaceRoof different?
The concept starts with a Volkswagen Multivan fitted with the factory panoramic glass roof. SpaceCamper removes the glass to create a pass-through from the cabin, but the factory roof itself remains in place. The SpaceRoof then attaches at the vehicle’s factory roof-rail anchor points and is described as removable.
At about 75 kg (165 lb), according to New Atlas’s September 6, 2024 report, it is a substantial structure rather than a lightweight fabric canopy. Its width extends beyond the van’s roof, creating more interior room and overhanging eaves. New Atlas says those eaves can help keep rain out when the sliding doors are open; that is the report’s description, not a verified weather-performance test.
How does the sleeping area work?
Instead of climbing an exterior ladder, occupants reach the upper sleeping area from inside the van through a hatch. The transverse bed is reported to measure 140 × 200 cm (55 × 79 in) and stays set up, avoiding the routine of raising or lowering a bed for everyday use.

A wardrobe is also described as fitting in the roof area. It breaks down when the roof is lowered, accommodating the concept’s ability to come down when parked or stored.
Can the SpaceRoof stay raised while driving?
New Atlas describes the concept as designed to remain raised on the road and potentially carry luggage above the cabin. That is a design claim in the 2024 report, not independent verification of road legality, load limits, crash safety or suitability for a particular vehicle. Owners should not treat it as permission to drive with a raised roof or cargo until SpaceCamper and the relevant vehicle documentation confirm the rules for a specific build.

The likely trade-off is aerodynamic drag, which can increase fuel use. The report does not provide a measured fuel-consumption figure, so the size of that effect is not established.
How does it compare with a production VW California?
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK describes the California as a production camper with a conventional pop-up roof and sleeping space for four. Its UK range page lists Beach, Coast and Ocean trims. It is a useful point of comparison, but it is a different vehicle conversion and roof mechanism—not a production version of the SpaceRoof.

For a real purchase comparison, check roof architecture and road-use instructions, bed dimensions and daily setup, interior versus exterior access, vehicle compatibility, weather protection, and likely drag. For the SpaceRoof specifically, production status, price, warranty and installation availability remain unverified in the cited reporting.
