Mike Neal’s 2008 Toyota Tacoma was reported at 1,521,992 miles in 2021, a remarkable total with an important qualification: the truck had received a replacement engine and transmission along the way. The mileage is a reported account of one heavily used work truck—not proof that a Tacoma’s original major components, or any vehicle, will last that long.
How many miles did Neal’s Tacoma reach?
Carscoops reported on July 22, 2021, that Neal’s Tacoma had reached 1,521,992 miles. A later article from Supercar Blondie, published July 25, 2024, put its accumulated total at about 1,625,000 miles. Those are figures reported by the two outlets; they are not independently verified odometer records or an official certification.
Carscoops said Neal bought the new 2008 Tacoma in November 2007. The truck’s exceptional mileage came in a demanding work routine: the outlet reported that he drove about 500 miles a day delivering nuclear medicines used in PET scans.
What was replaced on the million-mile Tacoma?
| Reported mileage | Component | What the report says |
|---|---|---|
| 880,000 miles | Engine | Carscoops reported that the original 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine was replaced because of a head-gasket problem. |
| 1.3 million miles | Transmission | Carscoops reported that the six-speed automatic transmission was replaced when its torque converter was going out, before the transmission had failed outright. |
The headline’s catch is therefore central to the story: the Tacoma accumulated extraordinary mileage, but not on its original engine and transmission. Carscoops’ account is news reporting that references AutoJeff Reviews, not a review of repair invoices or an independent mechanical inspection.

What happened to the truck afterward?
Supercar Blondie’s 2024 report said Neal died in 2023 and that the Tacoma was at the dealership where he bought it. The same article described him tracking mileage after the odometer maxed out, using trip meters and a logbook and marking progress on the tailgate. These are later secondary-reporting details; the report did not provide dealership records, the logbook, or other primary documentation for review.
What this story does—and doesn’t—show about Tacoma longevity
Neal’s Tacoma is a striking example of a vehicle used intensively for work and kept on the road through major repairs. It does not establish a typical Tacoma lifespan, a guaranteed maintenance formula, or what repairs would cost another owner. Nor does the reported total mean the original engine and transmission lasted 1.5 million miles: both were replaced according to Carscoops.
