Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHalo.Car is the Las Vegas startup behind the “driverless” rental-car delivery service: a paid, specially trained human pilot remotely drives an empty electric car to a customer, who takes over for the rental. The car has no driver inside during delivery, but it is not driving autonomously from pickup to handoff.
Who remotely drives the cars?
Halo.Car employs remote pilots who operate vehicles from computer stations. They use a steering wheel and pedals, along with live video and sensor feeds, to drive the car to a customer. The customer then drives the car during the rental and hands control back to a pilot when it ends. Axios described the service as a way to bring carshare vehicles to customers: “If Zipcar could come to you like an Uber, that’s Halo.Car.” Axios’s 2023 report covered the company’s commercial launch.
How did Halo.Car’s first deployment work?
In its 2023 report, Axios described a modified electric Kia Niro SUV summoned through the Halo app. The remote-driving leg used T-Mobile 5G as the primary connection, with AT&T and Verizon as backup networks intended to support low latency and reliability. That network configuration is a reported deployment detail, not a guarantee that connectivity cannot fail.
Axios reported an initial fleet of about 20 vehicles, a maximum remote-driving speed of 25 mph, and a service area of 1.5 square miles in downtown Las Vegas. Employees followed in a chase car and could monitor and stop remotely driven vehicles. Those are 2023 rollout details; they should not be assumed to describe Halo.Car’s current fleet, limits or coverage.

How “driverless” is this service?
“Driverless” describes the empty seat during the delivery trip, not the absence of a human driver from the process. A remote pilot actively steers and controls the vehicle. The distinction matters: the customer receives a car without an onboard delivery driver, but the delivery itself depends on human operation and a communications link.
A 2020 NIST paper on vehicle teleoperation said the technology was still in its initial stages. It describes teleoperation as a way to help automated vehicles handle situations they cannot manage alone, extend the operating domain of Level 4 vehicles, or perform tasks such as taxi delivery, valet parking and goods delivery. That is different from claiming unrestricted Level 5 autonomy: a human operator remains involved, whether as the primary driver or as an assistance layer.

What happens when conditions are difficult?
Remote driving has two important dependencies: what the vehicle can do onboard and how reliably people and vehicle systems can communicate. NIST notes that teleoperation can expand where a vehicle operates, but the system relies on dependable interfaces among the vehicle, edge systems and cloud services.
Weather, obstacles, emergency interactions and degraded network connectivity are therefore important edge cases. The supplied company and reporting descriptions do not establish a universal procedure or guarantee for every such scenario. The 2023 Las Vegas account does establish one concrete safeguard: employees in chase cars could monitor and stop the remotely operated vehicles.

Teleoperation software for other vehicles
A California Department of Transportation and UC Berkeley report describes Phantom Auto’s platform for remotely driving, assisting and monitoring forklifts, trucks, robots and cars through live video, audio and data. It characterizes Phantom Core SDK as a vehicle-agnostic cloud platform for low-latency teleoperation over 4G LTE, Wi-Fi or 5G. This represents the software and infrastructure side of remote operation rather than Halo.Car’s customer-facing rental service.

The evidence describes pilots operating from specialized computer stations, not a work-from-home arrangement. Vay’s careers page advertises remote truck-driving roles but specifies specialized stations and a CDL license for those jobs. Requirements and work locations vary by employer and role; the cited information does not establish that Halo.Car is hiring now or that its pilot jobs can be done from home.
