The polished Cybertruck is real, and it can look startlingly close to a giant road-going mirror. But the available evidence does not establish that Tyson Garvin’s Missouri truck has blinded drivers, caused a crash, violated a nationwide law, or been declared unsafe by a regulator.

The more accurate conclusion is narrower: a mirror-like stainless-steel body creates a plausible glare and visibility concern, especially in direct sunlight or when headlights strike it at the right angle. Whether that becomes a legal violation or an actual roadway hazard depends on viewing angle, lighting, local law, and facts that have not been tested publicly.
How a Cybertruck became a moving mirror
Garvin wanted a polished finish from the time he ordered his Cybertruck. He reportedly disliked Tesla’s factory-applied, unevenly brushed appearance and commissioned Brylee Waits and the Missouri-based business The Polishing Guy to refinish the truck.

This was not a chrome-colored vinyl wrap. The team mechanically sanded and polished the truck’s exposed stainless-steel panels until they developed a highly reflective, mirror-like appearance. The project followed a meeting at a local lifted-truck show. Although the crew had mainly worked on semi-trucks rather than electric vehicles, they accepted the Cybertruck job.
Published accounts give two different descriptions of the labor involved. Contemporaneous coverage described more than 25 hours of work, while a republished Business Insider account quoted the polisher estimating roughly one week and about 120 labor-hours, with three additional employees involved. Those numbers may describe different things—active polishing time versus the total labor effort—but neither should be treated as a definitive stopwatch measurement.
The result is best described as mirror-like, not optically perfect. Specialist guidance on Cybertruck polishing notes that milled or cold-rolled metal contains manufacturing variation, panel waviness, grain, and subsurface differences. Those characteristics can remain visible even after extensive correction. A polished Cybertruck may reflect the sky, trees, road, and nearby vehicles dramatically without behaving like a flawless household mirror.

Why the Cybertruck is unusually reflective
Most vehicles hide their body metal beneath paint, clear coat, or another finish. The Cybertruck exposes stainless steel, so changing the surface texture has a much more visible effect. Sanding removes progressively finer surface irregularities, and polishing brings the metal to a much higher sheen.
Tesla’s owner documentation also makes clear that the Cybertruck’s stainless-steel exterior needs careful maintenance. Road salt and other contaminants should be removed promptly, and some substances can damage or discolor the finish. The manual provides care guidance for the factory stainless-steel body; it does not endorse turning the panels into a mirror.
Garvin said the smoother surface also made fingerprints, dirt, and bugs less likely to adhere. That is an owner’s observation rather than an independently measured benefit. A highly polished surface can still show contamination clearly, and keeping it looking uniform may require careful washing and drying.

Could the reflection be dangerous?
Yes, the concern is physically plausible. A large reflective vehicle can redirect sunlight or headlight illumination toward another road user. Depending on the angle, the reflection could produce glare, momentarily reduce visual comfort, or distract a driver.
A reflective surface can also reduce contrast. If the body reflects the road, trees, sky, or surrounding buildings, parts of the vehicle may visually blend into the environment from a particular viewpoint. That is different from saying the truck becomes invisible in every condition, but it explains why people reacted so strongly to photographs and videos of the finish.
Federal vehicle-safety materials recognize glare as a relevant concern in the context of vehicle lighting, reflective surfaces, and conspicuity. Those materials discuss minimizing unacceptable glare and preserving the ability of other road users to recognize a vehicle. They do not amount to a finding that this modified Cybertruck is unsafe.
The owner appears to have considered one specific risk. Garvin said he worried that headlights from a following vehicle might bounce off the tailgate and look like another vehicle facing the driver. He reported that when his wife followed the Cybertruck, the tailgate’s downward angle mostly reflected the ground rather than her headlights.
That observation is useful because it shows that geometry matters. It is not a controlled glare test. One following vehicle, one road, one set of headlights, and one observation cannot establish how the truck behaves at different elevations, distances, sun angles, weather conditions, or traffic positions.

Is a mirror-polished Cybertruck illegal?
There is no sound basis for declaring that mirror-polishing a Cybertruck is illegal everywhere in the United States. The legality may depend on state equipment rules, glare provisions, nuisance laws, unsafe-operation standards, and the actual effect of the modification on other road users.
California, for example, has rules covering lamps, reflectors, glazing, and glare-related equipment. California Vehicle Code Section 25950 addresses the colors of light emitted or reflected by lamps and reflectors, while related provisions address glare from certain window materials and vehicle devices. Those provisions should not automatically be expanded into a definitive ban on a polished exterior body panel.
Federal lighting regulations similarly focus on lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. Federal guidance discussing reflective surfaces in the driver’s field of view and unacceptable glare is not the same as a federal prohibition on reflective exterior bodywork.
In practical terms, an owner considering this modification should check the law where the vehicle is registered and operated, then ask a qualified local vehicle-equipment attorney or inspection authority about the specific finish. A general internet claim that “chrome cars are illegal” is not a substitute for a jurisdiction-specific answer.
How the finish is made—and why this is not a weekend detailing job
A mirror finish on stainless steel generally involves surface correction through multiple stages of sanding and polishing. The operator must manage panel contours, factory milling marks, scratches, waviness, heat, contamination, and the risk of creating an uneven appearance from one panel to the next.
Someone researching the process may encounter a stainless-steel metal polishing kit or a stainless-steel polishing compound. Those categories are relevant to understanding the materials involved, but they do not make a full Cybertruck conversion a sensible beginner project. A small test panel and a vehicle’s entire body are very different tasks.

Before attempting any work, an owner would need to understand the abrasives, machinery, personal protective equipment, panel handling, cleanup, and the consequences of removing or altering the existing surface. The reviewed evidence does not establish that polishing removes a specific factory corrosion-protection layer, so that claim should not be made as a certainty. It does establish that Tesla’s stainless-steel exterior requires attentive care.

Garvin said the polished body was easier to keep free of fingerprints, bugs, and dirt. That remains an anecdotal claim, and a mirror-like finish can make smears and fine scratches especially conspicuous.
Owners maintaining polished metal may reasonably look for microfiber automotive detailing towels and products intended for stainless steel. The relevant priorities are clean, non-abrasive materials, frequent removal of road salt and contamination, and avoiding anything that could introduce new scratches. No particular towel or consumer product was tested for this truck.
Protection is another unresolved issue. A coating or paint-protection film might sound like a logical follow-up to protect a labor-intensive finish, but compatibility, optical appearance, adhesion, repairability, and durability on polished stainless steel require product-specific research. There is not enough evidence here to recommend a particular protective film or coating.
Did this become a trend?
The project was not merely a one-off image that disappeared after going viral. After the original social-media post circulated in late May 2024, the polisher reportedly received more than 60 inquiries and had four additional Cybertrucks waiting for work. Later specialist businesses continued advertising Cybertruck mirror-polishing services.

Later listings and enthusiast reports have put some jobs in the approximate range of $4,500 to $8,500 and described several-day turnaround times. Those are provider or enthusiast figures, not a standardized market price. The final cost can vary with the truck’s condition, the amount of correction required, location, labor, finish target, and whether the work is performed on every panel.
What a careful verdict looks like
The polished Cybertruck is a striking customization that turns exposed stainless steel into a highly reflective surface. The concern about glare is reasonable because reflections can affect drivers under particular lighting and viewing conditions. Reduced contrast and distraction are also legitimate questions.
But the stronger claims go beyond the evidence. The available reporting does not document a measured blinding event, collision, traffic citation, insurance action, regulator investigation, or nationwide legal ban connected to this truck. Nor does it provide an independent test showing that the Cybertruck consistently disappears into its surroundings or creates unacceptable glare.

It may create a hazard in some circumstances, and that possibility deserves more than a dismissive shrug. But it has not been proven to be a dangerous vehicle in general, and the evidence does not support calling it definitively illegal. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mirror-polished Cybertruck illegal?
No nationwide rule identified in the reviewed material specifically bans a mirror-polished Cybertruck. Its legality may depend on state equipment, glare, nuisance, or unsafe-operation rules, so owners should check the jurisdiction where they drive and register the vehicle.
Was the Cybertruck wrapped in chrome?
The reported project involved mechanical sanding and polishing of the exposed stainless-steel panels, not a chrome vinyl wrap. The finish is highly reflective but not necessarily a flawless, distortion-free optical mirror.
Has anyone tested whether the polished Cybertruck blinds drivers?
The reviewed reporting did not document an independent glare, visibility, crash, or autonomous-perception test of this particular Cybertruck. The owner’s following-car observation was anecdotal, not a controlled safety study.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How much does it cost to polish a Cybertruck?
Reported figures vary. One account described more than 25 hours, while another quoted an estimate of about one week and 120 labor-hours with three additional employees. Later listings reportedly cited roughly $4,500 to $8,500, but prices vary by provider, location, condition, and scope.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Cybertruck’s mirror-like finish is real, and glare is a plausible concern. What has not been established is just as important: no documented crash, measured blinding event, regulator finding, or nationwide ban has been tied to this truck. Treat the modification as a specialist cosmetic project and check local vehicle-equipment rules before assuming it is either legal or illegal.
