This Is the Modern-Day 3000GT Mitsubishi Needs to Make

Mitsubishi has not announced a 3000GT successor. Here’s the case for a modern, technology-rich AWD grand tourer inspired by the original.

The modern-day 3000GT Mitsubishi needs to make is not an announced car: it is a proposal for a technology-rich, all-weather grand tourer that revives the original’s spirit without pretending the 1990s have returned. Mitsubishi’s own plans currently point elsewhere, toward electrification, ASEAN-focused models and off-road vehicles. But the 3000GT’s blend of performance, comfort and technical ambition offers a compelling template for a future halo car.

What made the original 3000GT worth reviving?

Mitsubishi dates the 3000 GT, also known as the GTO, to 1990 and describes it as a “new-age, super 4WD sports car.” Its heritage account lists a 3.0-liter V6 in naturally aspirated form or as a twin-turbo rated at 280 PS. Full-time four-wheel drive was central to its handling and stability, while features such as a variable rear spoiler and driver-selectable Active Exhaust System made the car feel like more than a conventional sports coupe. Mitsubishi Motors’ heritage account presents the 3000GT/GTO as a showcase for combining serious performance with technology.

Mitsubishi North America’s retrospective also notes that the 3000GT launched in 1990 with full-time AWD and active aerodynamics. The company says Motor Trend named the 3000GT VR-4 its Import Car of the Year for 1991. That award is reported in Mitsubishi’s history account; it is a company retrospective, not an independent award archive.

What should a modern 3000GT be?

A grand tourer, not another SUV

The right successor would be a low, comfortable performance car designed for distance as well as speed. It should have room for two adults and their luggage, composed highway manners, and a cabin suited to long journeys. That is a proposed direction, not a description of a Mitsubishi product in development. A grand tourer would also give Mitsubishi a distinct identity alongside the crossovers and off-road vehicles emphasized in its current plans.

All-weather ability as its defining trait

The original’s full-time AWD is a better starting point than a simple horsepower chase. A successor should make confident traction and predictable performance part of its character, with power delivery and chassis tuning that remain engaging on ordinary roads and in poor weather. Modern driver-assistance and stability systems could support that goal, but they should not make the car feel detached from the driver.

Technology with a purpose

The 3000GT’s active features were part of its appeal, not just decoration. A new car could carry that idea forward with useful, clearly explained technology: adaptable aerodynamic elements if they add meaningful stability, and selectable drive settings that change the car’s response rather than merely its dashboard graphics. These are design recommendations, not confirmed features or engineering plans.

What powertrain makes sense?

No successor powertrain is established in the sources cited here. Mitsubishi North America’s Momentum 2030 plan describes a mix of internal-combustion, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and battery-electric vehicles, so the case for a new 3000GT does not depend on assuming a particular engine. The plan’s 2024 announcement frames electrification as part of a broader lineup renewal.

A hybrid AWD grand tourer could preserve the original’s sense of mechanical performance while aligning with that range of powertrains. A battery-electric version could offer rapid response and all-wheel traction, but it would need to deliver the range, charging practicality and long-distance comfort a touring car requires. Either path is hypothetical; the available announcements do not say Mitsubishi is developing a sports car, much less specify its configuration.

Does a 3000GT fit Mitsubishi’s stated direction?

There is a real strategic tension. In its May 29, 2026 mid- to long-term vision, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation says it is focusing management resources on ASEAN strategic models and off-road vehicles, where it sees its strengths, and plans to launch 13 new models over the next six years. The announcement names the all-new Pajero as a near-term flagship; it does not name a 3000GT successor. Mitsubishi’s vision announcement is the clearest guide to its disclosed global priorities.

North America’s Momentum 2030 plan sets out electrification, a renewed and expanded lineup, a modernized retail sales model and network expansion. It said a new or completely refreshed vehicle would debut each year from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2030. The company’s current U.S. concept and product information, however, emphasizes adventure-oriented and off-road-capable vehicles, including an Eclipse Sportback EV and a rugged Outlander variant. That page describes the direction being presented to U.S. customers, not a guarantee of a global launch.

A sports-car halo would therefore be a choice to broaden Mitsubishi’s identity, not an obvious extension of the announced program. The available sources provide no sales forecast, development-cost estimate or consumer-demand figure for a revival. The argument for making one is instead about distinctiveness: a 3000GT could reconnect the brand with a performance legacy while showcasing whichever electrified technology Mitsubishi chose to develop.

The verdict: make a modern grand tourer, not a nostalgia replica

Mitsubishi should treat the 3000GT as a brief, not a blueprint: build a refined, all-weather AWD grand tourer with memorable technology and a powertrain suited to its future lineup. Keep the name and ambition, but avoid copying the original’s proportions, equipment or engine just to satisfy nostalgia. That is the car the 3000GT name deserves—and, for now, an editorial recommendation rather than a Mitsubishi announcement.
