Maserati already makes a mid-engined supercar: the MC20. The car we wish it would make is a more focused, more dramatic interpretation of that idea—not an announced model, but a design proposition built around the real MC20’s engineering and the kind of character its specifications invite.
What Maserati already makes: the MC20
The MC20 is the right starting point because Maserati describes it as mid-engined, with a 90-degree V6, rear-wheel drive and a carbon-fibre monocoque. The company’s current specifications list a 3.0-litre Nettuno engine producing 630 HP and 730 Nm of peak torque. Maserati also lists a 0–100 km/h time of under 2.9 seconds and a top speed above 325 km/h. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results, and some values on the current page are marked preliminary. Maserati MC20 specifications
The proportions and layout establish a credible foundation for a more uncompromising car. Maserati lists the MC20’s carbon-fibre monocoque at approximately 100 kg and its weight distribution at 41% front and 59% rear. Those are useful reference points, not proof that a different body or chassis tune would be faster or better balanced.
The car we wish Maserati would make
Our imagined version would keep the MC20’s mid-engine, rear-drive formula but sharpen the brief: less grand-touring compromise, more visual tension and a more immediate connection between driver and machine. That is a design wish, not a prediction or a description of a confirmed Maserati project.

A more purposeful shape
We would give it a low roof, a compact cabin set well forward of the rear axle and broad, clearly defined rear haunches. The surfaces should do more than look theatrical: large cooling openings would appear to feed the engine and brakes, while the rear bodywork would make the mid-engine layout legible at a glance. These details are imagined; Maserati has not announced this body configuration.
Keep the Nettuno character
The case for building from the MC20 is stronger if the hypothetical car retains the Nettuno V6 rather than reaching for an unsupported engine claim. Maserati’s 2020 announcement describes a 3.0-litre, 90-degree twin-turbo V6 with direct and port fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication and twin-spark passive prechamber ignition. The company says the engine was designed at its Modena facilities and describes its technology as drawing on Formula 1; that is Maserati’s account, not an independent technical audit. For this wish-list car, we would resist chasing a bigger headline power figure. Maserati’s published MC20 output—630 CV at 7,500 rpm in the 2020 engine announcement, expressed as 630 HP on the current model page—already gives the concept a serious performance baseline. The better target would be a more communicative throttle, a crisp response through the mid-range and a chassis that makes the car’s balance easy to read. Those are design priorities, not claimed results.
Make the chassis serve the driver
The MC20’s carbon-fibre monocoque offers a plausible basis for a focused variant. Rather than claiming a weight reduction without evidence, we would prioritize transparent steering, progressive responses and brakes that remain consistent under repeated hard use. A modestly more track-oriented setup could make the car feel more alert without turning it into a single-purpose circuit machine.

Supercar intensity without losing Maserati usability
The main design decision is not simply whether the car should be faster. The MC20’s listed acceleration and top speed already place it firmly in supercar territory. The interesting opportunity would be to make the driver feel more involved while preserving enough comfort and refinement for a long road journey.
That balance argues against an extreme, stripped-out special edition as the only answer. A lower, more sculptural body and a more focused chassis could give the car a distinct identity; retaining usable cabin space and road manners would make that identity worthwhile beyond a track day. This is our editorial judgment about the hypothetical, not a comparison Maserati has tested or endorsed.

Why the MC20 is a reference, not an announcement
Maserati’s official materials establish the MC20 as a real mid-engined car and describe the Nettuno engine’s specifications. They do not establish that the company has confirmed the imagined supercar in this article. The MC20 is evidence of the layout and engineering Maserati currently offers, not evidence that a new variant is on the way.
