This Electric Outboard Conversion Makes for a Quiet Day on the Water

An electric outboard conversion could mean a matched kit, a complete replacement motor or a larger hybrid repower. Here’s how to tell which fits your boat.

There is no universal bolt-on conversion that turns any gasoline outboard into an electric one. For a small non-powered boat, a matched motor-and-battery kit may be the simplest route; replacing a gas outboard usually means choosing a complete electric outboard package; and larger sailboats or powerboats may need a hybrid repower. The right choice depends on the boat, the existing installation and the kind of day on the water you want—not just a battery’s amp-hour rating.

What does “electric outboard conversion” mean?

The phrase can describe three different projects, and they are not interchangeable:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Adding propulsion to a non-powered small boat: a matched battery and motor package intended for kayaks, inflatables or lightweight fishing boats.
  • Replacing a gasoline outboard: removing or setting aside the gas engine and fitting a complete electric outboard, battery and compatible controls. A complete electric outboard is not, by itself, a kit for converting the internals of an existing gasoline engine.
  • Repowering a larger vessel: installing a hybrid-electric system designed around the boat, often involving batteries and a generator rather than a small outboard package.

Decide which project you mean before comparing motors. A kit made for a lightweight fishing boat cannot be assumed to suit a heavier boat that previously used a gas outboard, and a hybrid system for a large sailboat is a different scale of work entirely.

Which type of system fits the boat?

System type What the supplier describes Best-fit scope and important limit
Matched small-boat kit LiTime describes a 12.8V, 100Ah battery paired with a 0.6kW motor. For non-powered kayaks, inflatables and lightweight fishing boats. Its product page also discusses trolling-motor compatibility; check the listed fit and your boat’s requirements rather than assuming universal compatibility. LiTime marine power solution.
Complete electric outboard Mercury lists the Avator 7.5e, 20e, 35e, 75e and 110e; its packages include batteries and chargers. Torqeedo groups its outboards by boat and power class, while ePropulsion publishes model-specific Spirit 1.0 specifications. For a boat suited to a complete electric outboard installation. Confirm compatibility, controls, shaft length, battery arrangement and installation with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer. Mercury Avator, Torqeedo outboards, ePropulsion Spirit 1.0.
Hybrid repower OSĒA describes systems for sailboat and powerboat builds and conversions, with generators and batteries sized for the vessel. An option to investigate for larger boats, not a small electric-outboard kit. Its published figures are supplier examples, not a quote or prediction for another boat. OSĒA.

For a kayak, inflatable or lightweight fishing boat

LiTime calls its 12V system a conversion kit for non-powered boats and specifies a matched 12.8V 100Ah battery and 0.6kW motor. The company says low-power operation can provide hours of cruising and full output is suited to shorter trips; that is vendor guidance, not a guaranteed runtime. Review its compatibility information and confirm that the complete setup suits the boat.

For a gas-outboard replacement

Compare complete electric outboards in the power range and configuration appropriate to the hull. Mercury directs buyers to authorized dealers for compatibility, pricing and installation. Its page gives example performance contexts using a 13-foot boat for the 7.5e and 20e, and a 19-foot 7-inch pontoon for the 75e and 110e; those examples should not be transferred to a different boat without a boat-specific assessment.

Torqeedo categorizes its US lineup as Travel Ultralight (1–3 HP) for kayaks and small boats, Travel (2–5 HP) for tenders, dinghies and small sailboats, and Cruise (6–25 HP) for motorboats and sailboats up to 12 tons. It lists the Travel Ultralight at 8.8 kg and claims range up to 100 km; that maximum is not a general prediction for other boats or conditions.

For a larger sailboat or powerboat

OSĒA describes hybrid systems that replace an existing diesel with generators and batteries sized for the boat. Its page gives “Karma” as an example with 24 miles electrically at 7 knots and 50 miles at 5 knots. Those are supplier-published figures for that example, not a range estimate for another vessel. OSĒA also displays system price ranges of USD $8,000–$30,000 for 25–40 ft sailboats and USD $30,000–$80,000 for 40–56 ft sailboats, with installation excluded; the company estimates 100–200 labor hours for each listed size range. Treat these as displayed supplier ranges, not a boat-specific quote.

How far can an electric outboard go?

There is no single range figure that applies across boats. Runtime depends on how much power the motor draws, the battery capacity, boat size and weather. A hull, load, speed and operating conditions can make the same motor-and-battery combination perform differently. Minn Kota specifically notes that battery life varies with amp-hour rating, boat size and weather.

Model-specific tables are more useful when their conditions are kept attached to the numbers. ePropulsion’s Spirit 1.0 page specifies a 1kW BLDC motor and a 1,276Wh lithium-ion battery weighing 8.7kg. Its published performance table lists 4.4 mph, five hours and 22 miles at 250W, and 6.2 mph, one hour 15 minutes and 7.8 miles at 1,000W. These are manufacturer-published Spirit 1.0 figures, not independently verified results or a forecast for a different hull. Read the full table and operating context on the Spirit 1.0 product page.

Torqeedo’s “up to 100 km” claim for the Travel Ultralight is likewise specific to its product claim, not directly comparable with ePropulsion’s speed-and-power rows or OSĒA’s boat-specific hybrid example. The vendors do not establish that these figures were measured in equivalent conditions.

What should you check before choosing a system?

Compare the complete installation, not motor power or battery capacity in isolation. Torqeedo identifies weight, battery capacity, overall efficiency and propulsion power as comparison metrics. For a real boat fit, also verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Boat and intended use: hull type, size, loaded weight and whether you need slow trolling, cruising or sustained higher-speed operation.
  • Motor and battery: propulsion power, battery capacity and total battery mass; ask for expected speed and runtime at the power level you plan to use.
  • Physical fit: shaft length against transom height, mounting arrangement, controls and clearance. ePropulsion’s Spirit page provides a shaft-length reference based on transom height.
  • Charging and storage: whether the battery is removed for indoor charging or remains installed, and whether charger, battery and wiring are specified for that arrangement.
  • Installation and support: who will verify boat compatibility, install the system and answer questions about controls, charging and service.
  • Total project scope: any existing engine removal, mounting changes, battery placement, charging equipment and installation labor—not merely the motor’s advertised price.

How do charging and installation affect the choice?

Charging arrangements should follow the selected battery and charger instructions. LiTime says a standard charger can suit a battery removed from the boat and charged indoors. For a charger permanently installed in a boat compartment exposed to moisture, it says to use a waterproof model. This is LiTime’s guidance for its system; follow the exact instructions for any other equipment.

For Mercury Avator, the manufacturer presents power packages with batteries and chargers and directs customers to authorized dealers for boat compatibility and installation. That is a sensible route when a replacement involves confirming transom fit, controls and the complete system rather than simply mounting a motor.

How quiet is an electric outboard, and what about emissions?

Mercury describes Avator operation as quiet and says there are no exhaust fumes or direct emissions during operation. Those are manufacturer claims about its electric outboard; they do not establish a measured sound level or the environmental impact of electricity generation and battery production. For a quiet fishing trip, also consider the boat, water conditions, speed and other nearby activity—an electric motor cannot make the whole outing silent.

What safety checks matter on the water?

Electrical and propeller precautions are essential. Minn Kota’s support guidance for its trolling motors recommends circuit protection with a fuse or circuit breaker, warns that shorting battery terminals creates an extreme fire danger, and cautions that improper wiring of 24V, 36V or 48V systems could cause a battery explosion. It also says to keep the propeller in the water before switching on and disconnect the motor when unused or while charging batteries. These are Minn Kota product instructions, not a complete installation manual for other manufacturers’ systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the circuit protection and wiring specified in the selected motor and battery manuals.
  • Do not improvise higher-voltage wiring or let battery terminals short.
  • Keep clear of the propeller, and do not switch on until it is in the water.
  • Disconnect or isolate equipment as directed when charging or leaving the motor unused.
  • Use the manual for your exact equipment and get qualified installation help when the system or boat fit is uncertain.

Minn Kota recommends at least a 12V, 110Ah deep-cycle marine battery for its trolling motors. That recommendation applies to its trolling-motor guidance; it is not a universal battery requirement for electric outboards or other systems.

What is the practical way to plan a conversion?

  1. Identify the project: adding propulsion to a non-powered small boat, replacing a gas outboard with a complete electric package, or planning a larger hybrid repower.
  2. Document the boat: record hull type and size, loaded weight, transom height, existing controls and how the boat will be used.
  3. Shortlist only suitable categories: compare small-boat kits with small-boat kits, complete outboards with complete outboards, and hybrid systems with larger-vessel projects.
  4. Ask for operating estimates at your planned speed: request the expected runtime or range for the boat and load, rather than relying on a maximum range claim or battery capacity alone.
  5. Confirm the whole installation: verify battery, charger, shaft, controls, mounting and circuit protection against the relevant manuals and manufacturer or dealer guidance.
  6. Review the safety and charging setup: confirm where the battery will be charged and stored and how the equipment should be isolated when unused.
