The DIY supercar linked to the original Gone in 60 Seconds is commonly identified as a Manta Mirage, also called a Manta Virage in later coverage. The distinction matters: an enthusiast vehicle database identifies a 1974 Manta Mirage in the film, while a 2025 article uses the name Virage. No manufacturer source in the available evidence resolves the naming or verifies the car’s specifications.
What was the DIY supercar in Gone in 60 Seconds?
The car is generally described as a Manta Mirage or Manta Virage, a fiberglass kit car. The official Gone in 60 Seconds website lists the original film, released in 1974, as well as its 1989 and 2000 successors. It does not, by itself, identify the specific car used in the original.
The vehicle identification comes from the community-maintained Internet Movie Cars Database entry for the 1974 film, which calls the car a Manta Mirage. That is useful secondary evidence, not a production record; it does not establish the car’s builder, chassis, or drivetrain provenance.
Why do sources call it both Virage and Mirage?
Supercar Blondie’s June 7, 2025 article calls the kit car a Manta Virage and attributes its creation to Brad and Tim LoVette. It describes the fiberglass car as something that could be completed at home or by an authorized assembler. Those are claims made by that article; no manufacturer source was available to independently confirm the history or clarify how Virage and Mirage relate.

For the movie identification, the more precise phrasing is “a car identified by the Internet Movie Cars Database as a Manta Mirage.” For the broader kit-car story, “Manta Virage” reflects Supercar Blondie’s wording. Treating the two names as unquestionably interchangeable would go beyond the available evidence.
Was a Manta Virage also in Death Race 2000?
Supercar Blondie links the Virage to the 1975 film Death Race 2000, but descriptions of the cars in that film conflict. The available evidence does not establish that a production Manta Virage appeared, nor does it reliably identify the car’s builder. The connection should therefore be described as a claim in that article, not as settled vehicle history.

How fast and expensive was the kit car?
Supercar Blondie reports an approximate weight of 1,900 pounds, 4.6-liter or 5.7-liter Chevrolet V8 options, estimated 0–60 mph acceleration in under five seconds, a top speed of about 150 mph, and a starting price below $6,000. The article does not provide a verified period catalog or test record for those figures, so they should be read as reported estimates—not measured performance or specifications guaranteed for every build.
Kit cars can vary by engine, components, assembly, and configuration. The figures should not be used to infer the exact specification of the car seen in the 1974 film, whose drivetrain and build provenance are not established by the vehicle database entry.
