What the headline means by an R8 V10 drop-top
“Spyder” is Audi’s name for the R8’s convertible body style. The headline’s V10 reference points to a V10-equipped Spyder, rather than every R8 Spyder across all years and trims. Top Gear also describes the R8 Spyder as a V10-powered drop-top supercar (Top Gear’s convertible roundup).
In its review of a 2017-model R8 V10 Spyder, CarsGuide described a 5.2-litre V10 and all-wheel drive, and said that car’s fabric roof opened or closed in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Those specifications refer to the configuration reviewed; they should not be assumed to describe every model year or trim (CarsGuide’s 2017 review).
Do the available prices prove it is a steal?
No. None of the available examples establishes the current value of a particular R8 V10 Spyder. The figures cover different markets, years, body styles and specifications, and one is historical new-car pricing rather than a current used-car asking price.

These figures are not a like-for-like price range. The V8 example is not a V10 Spyder, the Cars.com result is for a coupe, the CarsGuide figure is from a 2017 review, and the dealer page’s original MSRP is not its current asking price. A “steal” verdict needs the actual car’s asking price and recent comparisons for R8 V10 Spyders with similar year, specification, mileage and condition in the same market.

Once you have the listing, assess the car itself and compare it only with genuinely similar examples. The cited listings illustrate why mileage, transmission, body style, market and price need to be considered together.

- Identity and specification: confirm model year, generation, engine, drivetrain, transmission and equipment. Do not treat a V8 coupe as a direct price comparison for a V10 Spyder.
- Price and market: record the asking price, currency and location, then compare it with recent V10 Spyder listings from the same market. A past new-car price or an unrelated model’s asking price does not answer whether the car is cheap today.
- Mileage and history: review the odometer reading alongside service records and accident history. Mileage alone cannot establish condition or value.
- Condition and roof operation: inspect the car and verify that the convertible roof opens and closes correctly. The 20-second operation and 50 km/h limit reported by CarsGuide apply to the 2017 configuration it reviewed, not automatically to every Spyder.
- Availability: confirm that the listing is current and that the advertised car is the one being offered. Marketplace and dealer pages may change, and a page describing a vehicle does not by itself establish a current asking price.
