Chinese electric-car sales are growing fastest in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, broadening the destination mix beyond Europe and the United States. But “Chinese EV” can mean a car made in China or one made by a Chinese automaker, and those are not always the same thing. The distinction matters when comparing import-reliant markets with countries where local manufacturers or factories supply more of the cars.
Where are Chinese electric-car sales growing fastest?
The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that more than half of Chinese electric-car sales overseas in 2025 went to markets outside Europe and the United States. Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America recorded the strongest regional growth.

These are growth rates, not comparisons of total sales. A region growing quickly may still have a smaller market than a more established destination; the cited figures do not give comparable regional sales totals.
How much do emerging markets rely on China-made cars?
Across markets outside China, Europe and the United States, China-origin imports accounted for 55% of electric-car sales in 2025, the IEA reports. This measures where the cars were made, not the nationality of the brand selling them.

That import share is not uniform across countries. The IEA identifies India and Viet Nam as exceptions where local automakers supply most electric-car demand. In other markets, imports from China have been a major part of the supply mix, but the balance can change as trade rules and local manufacturing evolve.
What do Brazil and Thailand show about changing market patterns?
The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2025 gives a dated baseline: in 2024, Chinese imports accounted for 85% of electric-car sales in both Brazil and Thailand. That is a 2024 figure, not a current share. The IEA’s 2026 outlook says local production shares have since begun to grow notably in both countries, illustrating why an earlier import share should not be treated as permanent.

The same 2025 outlook reported that electric-car sales across emerging markets in Asia and Latin America rose by more than 60% in 2024, to almost 600,000. That combined regional figure describes the 2024 market, not sales of Chinese cars alone.
Does “Chinese EV” mean a Chinese brand?
No. A vehicle’s manufacturing location and its automaker’s ownership or headquarters are separate measures. A foreign-headquartered company can make a car in China, while a Chinese-owned brand can build or sell cars outside China. When comparing market figures, check whether they count China-made vehicles, Chinese automakers, Chinese-owned brands, exports or consumer sales.

The IEA reports that four in five Chinese-made electric cars sold overseas in 2025 were made by Chinese manufacturers, compared with less than two in five in 2021. This describes the manufacturer mix among overseas sales of cars made in China; it is not the share of all electric cars sold worldwide that came from Chinese brands.
How does the European market compare?
Europe remains important, but the IEA’s 2026 outlook describes Chinese-made sales destinations as diversifying beyond a Europe-heavy export picture. In the European Union, China accounted for close to 60% of electric-car imports in 2025, equivalent to less than 20% of total EU demand. Within those imports from China, the share from Chinese brands rose from 50% in 2023 to more than 70% in 2025.

The IEA notes that this shift includes Chinese-owned legacy European brands such as Volvo Cars and MG. The import figure concerns the cars’ origin; the brand figure concerns the companies behind them. Neither measure alone tells you how many cars were sold under a particular brand across all countries.

A car shipped from China is not necessarily a car already bought by a driver. The IEA cautions that export totals can diverge from sales in destination markets when vehicles are stockpiled there as unsold inventory. It also reports that Chinese original-equipment manufacturers accounted for 70% of electric-car exports from China in 2024, up from 55% in 2023. Those are export-mix figures for 2024, not destination-market sales shares.

Trade policy can change the picture as well. The IEA reports that import tariffs and other trade restrictions shifted in several major destination markets. Together with growing local production in places such as Brazil and Thailand, those changes mean past import shares or export growth rates may not predict the next year’s sales mix.

What the market figures can—and cannot—tell you
- They show wider reach: the strongest recent regional growth is in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, and more than half of overseas Chinese electric-car sales in 2025 went outside Europe and the United States.
- They show supply patterns, not buyer loyalty: a high share of imports does not by itself establish customer satisfaction, profitability or lasting preference for a brand.
