These Are the 10 Fastest Cars Made by American Companies

The Hennessey Venom F5 claims 311+ mph, but the SSC Tuatara owns the strongest verified American production-car record at 282.9 mph over two directions.

The Hennessey Venom F5 has the biggest published number—more than 311 mph—but that is a target, not a completed record. The strongest verified American production-car speed record belongs to the SSC Tuatara, which averaged 282.9 mph over two directions. The Tuatara also recorded a separate 295-mph one-way run.

That distinction matters. Once manufacturer targets, one-way tests, and independently validated two-way averages are placed in separate evidence categories, the answer becomes much more useful than a simple list of impressive numbers. This ranking covers road-legal production cars made by U.S.-based automakers and specialist manufacturers, whether or not every car was finally assembled in the United States. Figures and availability are stated as of August 10, 2026.

The quick answer

Question Answer Figure
Highest published target Hennessey Venom F5 311+ mph
Highest independently validated two-way average SSC Tuatara 282.9 mph
Highest documented one-way run among the leading American hypercars SSC Tuatara 295.0 mph
Fastest car from a mainstream American automaker Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C8 233 mph

The headline ranking below is ordered by each car’s highest publicly published figure. Because those figures do not all have the same evidentiary value, every entry carries an evidence label. The Venom F5 therefore appears first for its 311-mph-plus target, while the Tuatara remains first when the standard is a serious, independently validated production-car record.

How the ranking works

Here, “fastest” means highest terminal speed. It does not mean quickest 0–60-mph time, 0–100-mph time, quarter-mile elapsed time, standing-mile speed, Nürburgring lap time, Circuit of the Americas lap time, or fastest convertible. A car can accelerate harder or lap a circuit faster while having a lower maximum speed.

“Made by an American company” refers to the company behind the car, not necessarily the location of every component or the final assembly plant. Hennessey, SSC, Czinger, and Saleen are U.S.-based specialist manufacturers. Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge are American brands associated with General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Stellantis’ U.S. operations. The second-generation Ford GT still qualifies even though Multimatic assembled it in Canada.

To qualify for this list, a car must have been street-legal in at least one relevant market, offered to customers, built in more than a single example, and manufactured by the named company or its production partner. Concepts, race cars, track-only specials, one-off record cars, and aftermarket conversions are excluded. There is no single universal production-volume rule: some record organizations have historically required a minimum number of cars, which is why the very low-volume Venom GT needs a qualification.

Evidence labels

  • VERIFIED 2-WAY: an opposite-direction average, with independent validation or a formal record organization where identified.
  • DOCUMENTED 1-WAY: a recorded speed in one direction, but not a two-way average.
  • TWO-WAY FACTORY TEST: a manufacturer-reported opposite-direction result; useful evidence, but not automatically independent validation.
  • MANUFACTURER CLAIM: a published specification or claimed capability without a comparable independent run.
  • TARGET / NOT YET ACHIEVED: an engineering objective or advertised capability whose full figure has not been publicly completed.
  • HISTORICAL CLAIM, UNVERIFIED: a famous period claim for which no publicly available independent test establishes the number.

1. Hennessey Venom F5 — 311+ mph target

Verdict: The Venom F5 owns the largest published number in this group, but it should not be described as a confirmed 311-mph car.

Hennessey Special Vehicles engineered the carbon-fiber-bodied F5 around a claimed capability of more than 311 mph. Its standard specification is listed at 1,817 bhp from a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The original coupe was limited to 24 examples, while Hennessey has described the broader F5 family as capped at 99 cars. That makes it a genuine low-volume production hypercar rather than a one-off prototype.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important counterweight is the company’s published test result: 271.6 mph, released on March 23, 2022. That is a significant measured result, but it is not the same thing as completing the advertised 311-mph target. The honest description is therefore “311+ mph claimed or engineered capability, with 271.6 mph publicly tested.”

The F5 family also includes different body and aerodynamic versions, including the Coupe, Roadster, Revolution, and Evolution. Their specifications and intended use are not automatically interchangeable. This ranking uses the road-going F5 claim rather than transferring a figure from a more specialized variant.

Sources: Hennessey’s 271.6-mph test and the F5’s 311+ mph and power claims.

2. SSC Tuatara — 295 mph one-way, 282.9 mph two-way

Verdict: The Tuatara is the answer when “fastest” means the strongest independently validated two-way production-car record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On May 14, 2022, an SSC Tuatara reached 295.0 mph in one direction. That is the highest published single-direction speed among the leading American hypercars in this comparison, but it is not a two-way average.

The more important record-grade figure is the Tuatara’s 282.9-mph average, recorded on January 17, 2021. SSC says Racelogic independently measured and validated that opposite-direction run. Because averaging runs in both directions reduces the influence of wind and other track conditions, 282.9 mph is the figure to use when comparing verified production-car records.

The Tuatara can produce up to 1,750 hp on E85 or methanol, or 1,350 hp on 91-octane gasoline. SSC says it is producing 100 road-legal Tuataras, along with 25 non-road-legal variants. Those variants should not be casually treated as the same road car.

The car’s history also requires an explicit caveat. SSC initially publicized a 316.11-mph average and a 331-mph peak from an October 2020 attempt. The run was challenged because the video, speed data, and vehicle progression did not reconcile. SSC later acknowledged problems with the execution and presentation of the data. That original claim should not be used as a current record. The defensible figures are 282.9 mph two-way and 295 mph one-way.

3. Hennessey Venom GT — 270.49 mph

Verdict: The Venom GT produced a documented 270.49-mph one-way run, but its tiny production run complicated its eligibility for formal production-car records.

A Venom GT reached 270.49 mph at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility in 2014. The car was a heavily reworked Lotus Elise/Exige chassis fitted with an American twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter V8. Hennessey reports 13 completed examples, an unusually small number for a car often discussed alongside much higher-volume production models.

That low production count is the key qualification. The run itself is one of the fastest documented speeds for an American road-going hypercar—and one of the fastest documented speeds for a manual-transmission car—but it did not satisfy the production-volume threshold historically applied by some record organizations. Calling it simply “the official fastest production car” strips away an important part of the story.

4. SSC Ultimate Aero TT — 256.14 mph

Verdict: Its 2007 speed is one of the strongest entries here because it was an opposite-direction average verified by Guinness World Records.

The SSC Ultimate Aero TT averaged 256.14 mph over opposite-direction runs on September 13, 2007. Unlike a manufacturer’s untested specification, this was a formal two-way result, and the car held the production-car speed record from 2007 until 2010.

The Ultimate Aero’s historical importance is easy to overlook beside the newer Tuatara and Venom models. But on evidence quality, its 256.14-mph average ranks above several newer cars whose larger published numbers are only claims. SSC’s records page identifies the Ultimate Aero as the record car and gives the result as approximately 256.2 mph.

5. Czinger 21C V Max — 253 mph claimed

Verdict: The V Max is a legitimate street-legal American hypercar, but 253 mph is a current manufacturer specification rather than an independently validated top-speed record.

Current Czinger dealer material lists the 21C V Max at 253 mph. The 21C is described as fully street-legal, and a 2026 dealer-network announcement identifies the VMax and high-downforce HDF versions within an 80-car production run. The standard car is listed at 1,250 bhp, with a 1,350-hp option appearing in current dealer material.

Variant and date confusion are especially important here. Older reports sometimes gave the standard 21C a 268-mph figure, while current Czinger dealer pages list the base 21C at 219 mph and the V Max at 253 mph. Those numbers should not be combined as though they describe one unchanged vehicle. This ranking uses the specifically identified 21C V Max and its current 253-mph specification.

6. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo — 248 mph claimed

Verdict: The S7 Twin Turbo belongs on a historical American-supercar list, but its 248-mph figure must remain labeled as a claim.

Saleen claimed a 248-mph top speed for the Twin Turbo version of the S7. Its published output was approximately 750 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. The S7 was a genuine production supercar from an American manufacturer, not merely a customer car modified with an aftermarket package.

However, no publicly available independent two-way top-speed test establishes that it reached 248 mph. The accurate wording is “Saleen claimed 248 mph,” not “the S7 reached 248 mph.” Its place in this ranking reflects the highest published number attached to the production car, not the quality of the evidence behind that number.

7. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C8 — 233 mph

Verdict: The C8 ZR1 is the fastest car produced by a mainstream American automaker in this comparison, and its 233-mph figure came from a two-way factory test.

Chevrolet recorded a 233-mph two-way average for the C8 Corvette ZR1 on the Papenburg high-speed oval. The test car used production-spec engine software, the standard aero package, stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and aluminum wheels. Its 1,064 hp comes from the 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged LT7 V8.

This is a particularly useful benchmark because it was not based on a theoretical target. At the same time, the run was reported by Chevrolet and General Motors, so “two-way factory test” is more precise than calling it independently validated in the same sense as the Tuatara’s Racelogic result or the Ultimate Aero’s Guinness result.

The ZR1 is therefore the mainstream winner, not the overall American-company winner. Tiny specialist manufacturers occupy the places above it with more extreme cars and, in some cases, less consistent evidence standards.

Sources: Chevrolet’s 233-mph announcement and GM’s factory-stock test details.

8. Ford GT, second generation — 216 mph

Verdict: The second-generation Ford GT is a 216-mph Ford production car, despite its Canadian assembly location.

Ford specified a 216-mph top speed for the 2017-generation GT. Its 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 was rated at 647 hp in U.S. specification. The model was produced from 2017 through its later limited-production run.

The manufacturing distinction is worth making explicit: Multimatic assembled the Ford GT in Canada, but Ford designed, sold, and badged it as a Ford production vehicle. Under an American-company definition, that makes it eligible. Under a strict “assembled in the United States” definition, it would not be.

9. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C7 — 212 mph

Verdict: The C7 ZR1’s 212-mph opposite-direction average beats its newer-looking rivals in evidence quality, but configuration matters.

The seventh-generation Corvette ZR1 recorded 214.88 mph in one direction and 210.20 mph in the other, producing a 212-mph average. The car used the supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8, rated at 755 hp.

The 212-mph figure applies to the standard low-wing configuration. Chevrolet’s optional ZTK high-wing package adds substantial downforce for track use but reduces maximum speed to approximately 202 mph. That is why the low-wing ZR1, rather than the highest-downforce version, is the car ranked here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sources: Car and Driver’s two-way test report and the low-wing/high-wing specification distinction.

10. Dodge Viper GTS or standard final-generation Viper — 206 mph

Verdict: The standard final-generation Viper is a claimed 206-mph car; the track-focused ACR is a different aerodynamic proposition.

Dodge listed a 206-mph top track speed for the standard final-generation Viper/GTS. The car used a naturally aspirated 8.4-liter V10 producing 645 hp. That combination of large displacement, rear-wheel drive, and a relatively low-production American chassis made the Viper one of the defining high-speed U.S. performance cars of its era.

Do not substitute the Viper ACR Extreme Aero figure here. The ACR’s large wing and aerodynamic package prioritized cornering downforce and reduced top speed to approximately 177 mph. The standard car’s 206-mph claim is the relevant figure for this list, and it should be described as manufacturer-claimed rather than independently verified.

Why a two-way average is more meaningful than a one-way peak

A one-way run is easy to understand, but it can be helped by a tailwind, a slight gradient, temperature, surface conditions, or other local effects. Running in the opposite direction and averaging the two results reduces the influence of those factors. It does not make every test perfectly comparable—the track, tires, fuel, weather, driver, and vehicle specification still matter—but it creates a much stronger basis for a record claim.

A practical evidence hierarchy is:

  1. Independently validated two-way average.
  2. Independently documented one-way run.
  3. Manufacturer-run one-way test.
  4. Manufacturer claim or published specification.
  5. Theoretical, simulated, or engineering target.

That is why the Tuatara’s 282.9-mph average is more meaningful than its larger 295-mph number. It is also why the Ultimate Aero’s 256.14-mph Guinness-verified average deserves more confidence than a newer car’s untested 260-mph-plus specification. Conversely, the C8 ZR1’s 233-mph two-way factory test is an excellent measured result, but its manufacturer-run status should remain visible.

The SSC Tuatara controversy, in plain terms

The Tuatara’s original publicity created much of the confusion around American top-speed records. SSC announced that an October 2020 attempt had produced a 316.11-mph average and a 331-mph peak. Viewers and analysts challenged the claim after finding that the video, apparent vehicle progression, and speed data did not reconcile.

SSC subsequently acknowledged errors involving the execution and presentation of the run. The company’s later record-grade attempt is the one to use: a 282.9-mph two-way average validated by Racelogic in January 2021. The separate 295-mph run in May 2022 was a one-way test. Neither figure should be blended with the discredited 2020 claim, and the old 331-mph number should not appear as a current record.

This episode illustrates the larger rule for every speed list: always ask whether the number is a peak or an average, whether the car ran in both directions, who measured it, and whether the exact production variant was road-legal and customer-available.

Fastest mainstream American automaker cars

If the question is really about the fastest car from a large-volume American automaker rather than a specialist hypercar company, the order is much clearer:

  1. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C8 — 233 mph, a two-way factory average.
  2. Ford GT — 216 mph, Ford’s published specification.
  3. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C7 — 212 mph, a two-way average in low-wing form.
  4. Dodge Viper — 206 mph, the standard final-generation car’s claimed top track speed.

The C8 ZR1 is not automatically the fastest American performance car in every discipline. For example, the Corvette ZR1X may be exceptionally quick in acceleration or on a circuit, but those achievements do not establish a higher top speed than the standard ZR1. Acceleration, lap time, and terminal speed are separate measurements.

Trim levels, aero packages, and body styles can change the answer

Top-speed rankings are rankings of specific configurations, not just model names. A high-downforce package may make a car substantially faster around a circuit while reducing its terminal speed. The C7 Corvette ZR1 demonstrates this directly: the standard low-wing car is rated at 212 mph, while the ZTK high-wing version is approximately 202 mph. The Viper ACR Extreme Aero similarly sacrifices its roughly 177-mph top speed for cornering performance compared with the standard Viper’s claimed 206 mph.

The same caution applies to the Czinger 21C’s HDF and V Max versions and to the various Hennessey Venom F5 Coupe, Roadster, Revolution, and Evolution models. A figure achieved or targeted by one aerodynamic and powertrain configuration should not be silently assigned to every car carrying the same model name.

Cars that are not included

This list intentionally excludes cars that would make the comparison less meaningful:

  • Hennessey Exorcist, Venom 1000, and similar tuner packages: these are aftermarket or heavily modified versions of existing cars rather than clean-sheet production models comparable to the Venom F5 or SSC Tuatara.
  • Callaway Sledgehammer: a famous one-off modified Corvette record car, not a regular production model.
  • Ford GT Mk IV: track-only rather than road-legal.
  • SSC Tuatara Aggressor: a non-road-legal variant.
  • Dodge Tomahawk and similar vehicles: not conventional, customer-delivered production cars in the sense used here.
  • Chrysler ME Four-Twelve and Ford GT90: concepts, not production cars.
  • Tesla Roadster: promised performance and production plans do not establish a completed production-car top-speed record.

The C6 Corvette ZR1 is often cited at 205 mph, just below the final-generation Viper’s 206-mph figure. Modern electric performance sedans such as the Lucid Air Sapphire and cars such as the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing are relevant to a broader American-performance discussion, but this ranking is deliberately focused on the documented and published top-speed figures in the production-car group above rather than attempting to create a separate acceleration or electric-car ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

So which one is actually fastest?

There are three defensible answers depending on the wording:

  • Biggest published target: Hennessey Venom F5, at more than 311 mph claimed or engineered capability. Its public test result is 271.6 mph, so 311+ is not a confirmed record.
  • Highest measured one-way speed: SSC Tuatara, at 295 mph in May 2022.
  • Highest independently validated two-way average: SSC Tuatara, at 282.9 mph in January 2021.
  • Fastest mainstream American automaker production car: Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C8, at 233 mph in a two-way factory test.

That is the distinction a responsible ranking needs to preserve. A manufacturer target can be exciting, but it is not evidence of a completed record. A one-way peak can be genuine, but it is more vulnerable to conditions than an opposite-direction average. For the most defensible record answer, the SSC Tuatara’s 282.9 mph is the number to remember.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hennessey Venom F5 really a 311-mph car?

Hennessey claims or targets more than 311 mph, but the publicly documented test result is 271.6 mph. Until the higher figure is completed and documented under a comparable test standard, it should be treated as a target or engineered capability—not a confirmed top-speed record.

Is the SSC Tuatara’s 295 mph a two-way average?

No. The 295-mph figure came from a one-way run on May 14, 2022. The Tuatara’s record-grade result is its independently validated 282.9-mph average over runs in opposite directions, recorded in January 2021.

Does the Ford GT count as an American car if it was assembled in Canada?

Yes, under the definition used here. The Ford GT is a Ford production vehicle made by an American company, even though Multimatic assembled it in Canada. That is different from calling it entirely assembled in the United States.

Why is the Viper ACR not the fastest Viper in this list?

The standard final-generation Viper was claimed to reach 206 mph. The ACR Extreme Aero package added substantial downforce for track performance and reduced top speed to approximately 177 mph, so the standard car is the relevant high-speed variant.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the Hennessey Venom F5 has the highest American speed target at 311+ mph, but the SSC Tuatara holds the strongest verified record: a 282.9-mph two-way average. Its separate 295-mph one-way run is the highest measured single-direction figure in this group. For a mainstream American automaker, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C8 leads at 233 mph.
