Thecatal’s Magic Fort is not a conventional rooftop tent: it is a large ground shelter designed to surround a vehicle and place an inflatable sleeping loft over its roof. A separate, smaller model called the Smart Shell is intended for freestanding or hatchback-attached camping. Both were described in a 2023 product report; that report does not establish current availability or independently tested performance.
How the Magic Fort’s vehicle-top loft works
The setup described by New Atlas starts with inflating the ground shelter and backing a vehicle through its central entrance. An inflatable drop-stitch mattress sits above the vehicle roof, supported by straps and carbon-fiber poles. Retention nets were described along the loft’s sides. The report also says the loft could stay in place while the vehicle was driven away for a day trip; these are reported design features, not independently verified test results.
That arrangement makes the vehicle part of the shelter rather than simply a platform for a rooftop tent. The Magic Fort was presented as a combination of a large ground-level canopy, divided interior spaces, and raised sleeping space.
Magic Fort: reported size, layout, and construction
New Atlas reported the following Thecatal specifications in August 2023. They are company-reported product details, not independent measurements or performance tests.

The Magic Fort was described as a canopy rather than a shelter with one complete floor throughout. Divider walls and floors create separate enclosed rooms, presented for sleeping, changing, relaxing, and movie viewing. With the vehicle absent, doors and flaps can be raised as awnings to create the reported canopy area.
Other reported features include UV-blocking design, ventilation, an inflatable frame combined with hard poles, guy straps, and a zippered stove jack. The 2023 report does not independently establish how the tent performs in particular weather, wind, or durability conditions.

Smart Shell is a separate, smaller vehicle tent
Thecatal’s Smart Shell is described as an inflatable dome tent for two to four people, weighing a reported 26.4 pounds (12 kilograms). Unlike the Magic Fort, it is intended either to stand on its own or attach around a vehicle’s raised hatch. An attached setup could use the vehicle’s climate control, according to the report.
There is an important exhaust caveat: New Atlas notes that a combustion vehicle’s rear exhaust may point toward the tent connection. It says climate control would probably be best left to an electric vehicle. The report does not establish that using a combustion vehicle this way is safe, so do not assume the arrangement is suitable for every vehicle.

What the 2023 prices do—and do not—tell you
New Atlas reported these Kickstarter pledge amounts and planned MSRPs in August 2023. They are historical campaign-era figures, not current quotes or confirmation that either tent is now for sale.

What to consider before comparing it with a rooftop tent
The Magic Fort’s distinguishing idea is the raised loft over a vehicle inside a much larger ground shelter. It is therefore not a direct substitute for a conventional rooftop tent, and the Smart Shell’s hatch attachment is a different design again. A practical comparison should account for:
- Space and capacity: the Magic Fort’s reported footprint and stated capacity are unusually large, but those figures describe the company’s product specifications.
- Weight and transport: its reported 122-pound total is divided across two bags, while the Smart Shell was reported at 26.4 pounds.
- Setup and vehicle use: the Magic Fort requires positioning a vehicle within the shelter for the loft arrangement; the Smart Shell is described for freestanding or hatch-attached use.
- Vehicle fit and safety: hatch shape and rear-exhaust location matter for an attached tent, particularly with a combustion vehicle.
- Current sales and verified performance: the 2023 report supplies campaign-era specifications and prices, not present availability or independent comparisons.
