The iconic GTI-Treffen at Lake Wörthersee ended at its longtime Austrian home after the municipality of Maria Wörth decided not to host future editions. Volkswagen announced in 2023 that it would carry the GTI fan gathering forward in Wolfsburg; Volkswagen Austria says the 2024 event there drew more than 15,000 fans. The Wörthersee meet is over, but the broader GTI gathering did not simply disappear.
What happened to the Wörthersee GTI-Treffen?
The gathering began in 1982 in Reifnitz, beside Lake Wörthersee in Austria. Volkswagen Austria estimates that about 100 vehicles attended the first edition. Over time, the meet grew and spread beyond Reifnitz, with gatherings also taking place around nearby Faaker See and Klopeiner See, including events before and after the main meet. Volkswagen’s historical account describes the event in its 2019 format as a four-day gathering.
In 2023, Volkswagen said Maria Wörth had decided not to host future annual editions. The company then announced a successor GTI gathering in Wolfsburg, starting in 2024. That brought the Wörthersee event at its original location to an end, rather than ending Volkswagen’s wider GTI fan events. Volkswagen’s announcement does not give the municipality’s reason for its decision.
Why did the GTI-Treffen end at Wörthersee?
The confirmed explanation is limited: the municipality of Maria Wörth chose not to host future editions, according to Volkswagen’s 2023 announcement. The announcement does not specify why. Environmental concerns, traffic, or participant behavior should not be presented as established reasons on the basis of that statement.

How does the Wolfsburg gathering compare with the Wörthersee meet?
| Aspect | Wörthersee GTI-Treffen | Wolfsburg successor |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Reifnitz/Maria Wörth, beside Lake Wörthersee in Austria | Wolfsburg, Germany, near Volkswagen’s home base |
| Host | Maria Wörth hosted the longtime gathering; the municipality decided not to host future editions. | Volkswagen announced it would host the successor GTI gathering. |
| Documented format | The historic gathering expanded to nearby lakes and included pre- and post-meet gatherings. Volkswagen described a four-day format in its 2019 historical account; that is not a current schedule. | Volkswagen Austria reports that the 2024 event included vehicle presentations, stage shows, and club gatherings. |
| Documented scale | About 100 vehicles at the 1982 first edition, according to Volkswagen Austria. | More than 15,000 fans at the 2024 event, according to Volkswagen Austria. |
The figures describe different things: the Wörthersee number is the estimated vehicle count at the first edition, while the Wolfsburg figure is reported fan attendance in 2024. They are not directly comparable attendance measures. Volkswagen Austria’s event retrospective provides the origin and 2024 details.
Why did Wörthersee become so closely associated with GTI culture?
The meet grew from a small gathering of GTI owners into a destination for fans and clubs, and its footprint expanded around the region. Volkswagen trainee-built show cars became a recurring part of the scene from 2011 to 2021. Porsche Holding’s 2022 retrospective identifies ten such cars in that period, including the Golf GTI First Decade (2017) and Golf GTI Aurora (2019). The ten-car figure refers to a retrospective exhibition in Salzburg, not the number of cars at a GTI-Treffen.

Is the GTI-Treffen still happening?
Volkswagen Austria reports that the Wolfsburg successor took place in 2024 and attracted more than 15,000 fans. The available official information does not establish a 2026 date or venue, so readers should not assume a current annual schedule without a fresh announcement. The established change is from the former Wörthersee location to Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg successor gathering—not a confirmed 2026 event calendar.
