The World’s First Flying Bike? What the XTURISMO’s 40-Minute Claim Really Means

The XTURISMO was marketed as the world’s first flying bike, but its 40-minute claim needs context. Learn its specifications, U.S. regulatory hurdles, and what happened after 2022.

The machine behind the “world’s first flying bike” headline is the XTURISMO Limited Edition, a large, single-rider aircraft developed by Japanese company A.L.I. Technologies and later associated with AERWINS Technologies. Contemporary reports said it could remain airborne for roughly 40 minutes and reach up to 100 km/h (62 mph).

That claim needs two important qualifications. The 40-minute figure was an advertised or reported endurance estimate, not an independently documented endurance test at top speed. And “world’s first” is a marketing and media description—not an uncontested historical fact. Earlier experimental flying bicycles and hoverbike-style machines existed.

What is the XTURISMO?

The AERWINS XTURISMO hoverbike is best understood as a hybrid, low-altitude manned aircraft that is shaped and operated more like a motorcycle than a conventional airplane. AERWINS describes it as a “Luxury Air Cruiser.” Its published power system combines an internal-combustion engine with batteries, while an electric control system manages autonomous control functions. [C2]

The rider sits on the vehicle rather than inside a cabin. That motorcycle-like layout, along with its ability to rise vertically and hover, explains the “hoverbike” label. Technically, however, its size, mass, propulsion system, and flight requirements put it much closer to a small manned aerial vehicle than to a road-going motorcycle or a consumer drone.

XTURISMO specifications

AERWINS’ published specifications describe a substantial machine rather than a lightweight personal aircraft:

Maximum speed 80–100 km/h, or approximately 50–62 mph
Maximum cruising range 40 km, or approximately 25 miles
Recommended payload Approximately 100 kg, or 220 lb

[C2]

The 300-kg figure is the vehicle’s published mass before accounting for the rider and operational considerations. That alone makes comparisons with a lightweight motorcycle misleading. The recommended payload also matters: a rider, clothing, safety equipment, and other carried weight would need to remain within the stated limit.

Can it really fly for 40 minutes?

Contemporary descriptions of the XTURISMO said it could fly for about 40 minutes. Reuters reported the vehicle as capable of flying for 40 minutes, while other contemporary coverage gave a broader estimate of approximately 30 to 40 minutes. [C1][C6]

However, AERWINS’ current product information emphasizes a maximum cruising range of 40 km, not a clearly labeled 40-minute endurance test. Range and endurance are different measurements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Endurance is how long the vehicle can remain airborne.
  • Range is how far it can travel under specified conditions.

A 40-minute flight at 100 km/h would imply a theoretical distance of roughly 67 km if the vehicle maintained that speed continuously. That does not establish that the XTURISMO can do so. The available specifications do not say that maximum speed and maximum endurance can be achieved simultaneously, nor do they provide the fuel state, battery reserve, rider weight, wind conditions, hover time, or flight profile used for the claim.

The most accurate summary is therefore: the XTURISMO was advertised and reported as having roughly 40 minutes of flight endurance, while AERWINS’ published specifications list a maximum cruising range of 40 km. Neither figure should be presented as a guaranteed 40-minute flight at 100 km/h. [C1][C2]

How fast is the flying bike?

AERWINS lists a maximum speed between 80 and 100 km/h. That is approximately 50 to 62 mph. [C2]

For a road vehicle, a top-speed figure is relatively easy to interpret. For a hovering aircraft, it is only one part of the performance picture. Holding position, climbing, maneuvering, carrying a rider, managing fuel and battery reserves, and operating safely near the ground all affect practical performance. Noise, downwash, stability, and the consequences of a power or control-system failure are also more important than they would be on an ordinary motorcycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The public materials reviewed for the XTURISMO do not provide a complete independent test protocol, certified endurance report, detailed noise measurements, or a full operational safety case. It would therefore be inaccurate to treat the advertised figures as equivalent to an independently audited automotive or aviation test.

Where and when was the XTURISMO unveiled?

A.L.I. Technologies unveiled the XTURISMO Limited Edition at Fuji Speedway in Japan in October 2021, according to a later AERWINS filing. The vehicle received much wider international attention after appearing at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in September 2022. [C5]

Reuters reported that a Detroit auto-show official took a demonstration flight and described the experience positively. The same report said the vehicle was already on sale in Japan at the time and that a smaller U.S. version was expected in 2023 at an estimated price of $777,000. [C1]

Those U.S. price and timing details were reported plans. They should not be treated as proof that a mass-market U.S. launch, regular production run, or ordinary customer-delivery program actually followed.

Was it really the world’s first flying motorcycle?

Not in every possible historical sense. Earlier inventors and companies had built experimental flying bicycles, hovercraft-like motorcycles, and other hoverbike prototypes. The answer depends on how “first flying bike” is defined.

The XTURISMO can reasonably be described as one of the first prominently marketed and publicly presented manned hoverbikes. But the stronger claim—that it definitively established the world’s first flying motorcycle—would require a precise category and a comprehensive comparison with earlier designs. The headline is best treated as a description used by the company and media in 2022, not as a settled engineering or historical award. [C1][C5]

Why it is not simply a motorcycle with rotors

The XTURISMO’s motorcycle-like appearance can obscure the engineering and legal differences between road travel and flight. A normal motorcycle is supported by its wheels and the road. A hoverbike must continuously generate and control lift, even when it is barely moving.

That creates several practical constraints:

  • Energy use: hovering and vertical flight require sustained power rather than occasional acceleration.
  • Payload sensitivity: rider weight and fuel or battery reserves directly affect performance.
  • Control: the machine must remain stable in three dimensions, including during takeoff, landing, and low-speed maneuvering.
  • Safety: a malfunction is an aviation problem, not merely a roadside breakdown.
  • Operating environment: noise, downwash, obstacles, weather, and nearby people limit where it could safely operate.

These factors explain why the XTURISMO’s 40-minute claim should not be read as “a motorcycle that can travel normally for 40 minutes.” It is an endurance figure for a hybrid flying machine whose useful operating time depends on conditions and mission profile.

Could it be flown legally in the United States?

It cannot simply be assumed to fit the U.S. ultralight rules. The Federal Aviation Administration’s 14 CFR Part 103 framework covers qualifying ultralight vehicles. For a powered ultralight, the relevant limits include a single occupant, recreational or sport use, no airworthiness certificate, empty weight below 254 pounds, no more than five U.S. gallons of fuel, maximum level-flight speed of no more than 55 knots, and a power-off stall speed of no more than 24 knots. • Multi-Scenario Use: The bicycle storage carry bag suits flights, trains, road trips, and outdoor adventures. You get versatile protection, so your bike arrives ready for the next ride

The XTURISMO’s published mass is approximately 300 kg—about 661 pounds—far above the 254-pound powered-ultralight threshold. Its published maximum speed of 80–100 km/h is also above 55 knots at the upper end and sits close to or above that limit depending on the exact configuration and conversion used. [C2][C7][C8]

Those numbers do not, by themselves, determine the vehicle’s final legal classification. U.S. requirements depend on the final design, operating purpose, aircraft category, and certification pathway. They do show why the XTURISMO should not be casually described as an ordinary Part 103 ultralight.

The FAA says that a pilot certificate is not required for vehicles that genuinely qualify as ultralights, although Part 103 operating rules still apply. That should not be generalized into “no license is needed to fly the XTURISMO.” [C7]

What happened to the U.S. version?

AERWINS previously announced the creation of a U.S. subsidiary to pursue redesign work for an FAA-compliant manned or unmanned low-altitude vehicle. Its 2023 SEC material described that effort as a development and redesign plan—not as completed FAA certification or established U.S. commercial service. [C4][C5]

The later corporate history is more consequential. In a 2024 SEC filing, AERWINS stated that it discontinued the operations of its Japanese subsidiary, A.L.I. Technologies, on December 27, 2023. A.L.I. subsequently filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition with the Tokyo District Court, and a bankruptcy trustee was appointed on January 10, 2024. The filing identified the manned air-mobility business and further development of the XTURISMO Limited Edition hoverbike among the discontinued operations. [C3]

AERWINS’ product website still displays XTURISMO information and an “Order Now” prompt. But that surviving webpage conflicts with the later corporate disclosures in an important way: it is not, by itself, evidence of current production, U.S. availability, FAA certification, or reliable customer delivery. So, can you buy one today?

There is not enough evidence in the available record to say that the XTURISMO is currently available to ordinary U.S. buyers. The reported $777,000 U.S. price was an earlier estimate for a planned smaller version, not a confirmed current retail price. Nor should the product page’s “Order Now” prompt be treated as proof of an active and completed sales process after the 2023–2024 corporate changes.

For now, the XTURISMO is best described as a publicized and demonstrated experimental or limited-edition air-mobility vehicle whose commercial and development status became uncertain after A.L.I. Technologies’ discontinued operations and bankruptcy proceedings.

Why the XTURISMO still matters

The XTURISMO did not make personal flying as simple as buying a motorcycle and taking it onto the street. Its importance was different: it showed how companies were trying to package vertical flight in a familiar, rider-oriented form and bring that idea to a major public auto show.

It also exposed the gap between a compelling demonstration and a practical transportation product. A commercially useful hoverbike needs more than speed and an endurance headline. It needs a validated safety system, a defined regulatory category, a reliable supply and maintenance network, operating locations, noise management, training requirements, and evidence that the claimed performance can be repeated under clearly stated conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can the XTURISMO flying bike stay in the air?

Contemporary company and media descriptions reported roughly 40 minutes of flight endurance, with some reports giving a 30-to-40-minute range. AERWINS’ published product specifications list a maximum cruising range of 40 km rather than clearly documenting a 40-minute certified test. The figure should not be interpreted as 40 minutes at the vehicle’s 100-km/h maximum speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How fast is the XTURISMO?

AERWINS lists a maximum speed of 80–100 km/h, or approximately 50–62 mph.

Was the XTURISMO the first flying motorcycle ever made?

That is not an uncontested historical fact. Earlier experimental flying bicycles and hoverbike-style vehicles existed. The XTURISMO was widely marketed and reported in 2022 as the “world’s first flying bike,” but the superlative depends on the definition of flying bike.

Can you buy the XTURISMO in the United States?

The available evidence does not establish current ordinary U.S. availability. A smaller U.S. version and an estimated $777,000 price were reported as plans in 2022. Later AERWINS filings disclosed the discontinuation of A.L.I. Technologies’ operations and further XTURISMO development, while the surviving product webpage alone does not prove current production or delivery.

Is the XTURISMO FAA-certified?

The research record does not show completed FAA certification. AERWINS described a planned U.S. redesign intended to pursue FAA compliance, but that was a development plan rather than evidence of certification or regular U.S. service.

The Bottom Line

The XTURISMO was a genuine manned hoverbike project, and its reported roughly 40-minute endurance made it one of the most eye-catching flying-vehicle concepts of 2022. But the careful version of the story is less sensational: the 40-minute number was an advertised or reported estimate, the official specification emphasizes a 40-km maximum cruising range, “world’s first” is a qualified marketing claim, and later corporate filings cast doubt on current production or availability.
