What is the Ferrari Luce?
The Luce is Ferrari’s first fully electric production model and the third powertrain pillar in the company’s current range strategy, alongside internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles. Ferrari is presenting electrification as an expansion of its product portfolio rather than a replacement for its combustion-engine and hybrid cars.

That positioning matters because the Luce does not follow the familiar Ferrari formula of a low, two-seat sports car with a mid-mounted engine. Its four-door, five-seat layout gives it a more practical grand-touring role. Ferrari has described the cabin as spacious and lounge-like, making the Luce closer in mission to a high-performance luxury GT than to a conventional mid-engine berlinetta.
The five-seat arrangement was emphasized during Ferrari presentations involving Pope Leo XIV and Italy’s president. That is a useful indication of the car’s intended identity: the Luce is designed to carry more people in greater comfort while still delivering the acceleration and chassis control expected of a modern Ferrari.
Why the car was previously called Ferrari Elettrica
Ferrari used Ferrari Elettrica as the project or descriptive name while the vehicle was being developed. On February 9, 2026, the company revealed the interior design and confirmed the production name Luce, an Italian word meaning light.
The naming change does not describe two different cars. Elettrica refers to the earlier development designation; Luce is the name of the production model. Ferrari showed a production-ready chassis and major components under the Elettrica designation in October 2025, before the interior and final name were revealed.
Development timeline: from hybrid research to Luce
- 2009: Ferrari says its electrification research began with hybrid solutions derived from the company’s Formula 1 car.
- 2013: The limited-production LaFerrari brought hybrid technology to Ferrari’s road-car range.
- 2019: The SF90 Stradale became Ferrari’s first series-production hybrid road car.
- 2022: Ferrari’s strategy targeted its first fully electric car for 2025 and envisioned fully electric vehicles making up 40% of the lineup by 2030.
- October 2025: Ferrari revealed the production-ready Elettrica chassis and major systems, emphasizing that key components were developed and manufactured in-house.
- February 9, 2026: Ferrari showed the interior and announced the Luce name.
- May 25, 2026: The Luce received its world premiere in Rome.
- 2027: First customer deliveries are planned.
Ferrari later revised its 2030 powertrain outlook. The newer mix calls for 20% fully electric vehicles, 40% hybrids and 40% internal-combustion models. That change is one reason the Luce should be understood as an important addition to Ferrari’s portfolio, not as a declaration that the brand is moving entirely away from combustion engines.
Four motors and all-wheel drive
The Luce uses four independent electric motors, with one motor assigned to each wheel. This arrangement provides all-wheel drive without a mechanical driveshaft connecting the axles and allows the control software to vary torque at individual wheels.
Ferrari’s technical material describes permanent-magnet motors and a Halbach-array rotor configuration. Ferrari connects that rotor technology to Formula 1-derived engineering and says it helps increase torque density while reducing weight. The published motor-speed figures are also unusually high: up to 25,500 rpm at the rear and 30,000 rpm at the front.
Ferrari’s technical presentation lists 310 kW for the rear electric-drive system and 105 kW for the front system. It separately lists 210 kW as the total front-axle output and an efficiency figure of 93% for that axle. Those figures should not be added together as though they were a single standardized peak-output measurement; Ferrari presents them using different system and axle descriptions. Public launch coverage gives the headline system figure as more than 1,000 horsepower.

The front axle can disconnect when its contribution is not needed. In those situations, the Luce can operate with rear-wheel drive to reduce electrical losses and improve efficiency. When maximum traction or corner-exit control is required, the front motors can return to operation.
Battery, voltage and energy management
Ferrari says the battery pack has an energy density of 195 Wh/kg and is mounted low in the vehicle to centralize mass. The company’s technical presentation places 85% of the battery modules in the floor between the axles, with the remaining 15% beneath the rear seats.
Ferrari also says the battery can be removed and repaired without damaging the vehicle’s structural elements. That is a significant engineering claim for a high-performance EV: it suggests the pack has been designed as a serviceable component rather than as an inseparable structural part of the body. The reviewed material does not, however, provide a complete long-term repair-cost or replacement-cost schedule.
Battery capacity has been reported at approximately 122 kWh by IAA Mobility coverage. That figure should remain labeled as reported or expected until Ferrari publishes a definitive final specification for each market.

The voltage descriptions require similar care. Launch coverage describes the vehicle as using an approximately 800-volt architecture, while Ferrari’s technical page describes an 880-volt battery pack. These are best treated as architecture and pack-voltage descriptions rather than contradictory claims about one universally fixed operating voltage. Neither figure, by itself, confirms how quickly the car will charge.
Chassis technology intended to control EV weight
Battery-electric vehicles carry substantial mass in their battery packs, so Ferrari has equipped the Luce with several systems intended to preserve agility and traction:
- Third-generation active suspension to manage body movement and maintain tire contact.
- Torque vectoring using the independent motors to influence the car’s behavior corner by corner.
- Four-wheel steering to improve maneuverability and high-speed stability.
- Disconnectable front drive to avoid carrying front-axle losses when all-wheel drive is unnecessary.
These technologies are Ferrari’s answer to the basic EV performance trade-off: a large battery can provide enormous power, but it also adds weight. The Luce’s four-motor layout and active chassis systems are intended to make that weight more manageable rather than pretending it does not exist.
Recycled aluminum and the dedicated Maranello EV operation
Ferrari says the Luce’s chassis and bodyshell use 75% recycled aluminum. The company estimates that this manufacturing approach saves 6.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide for every vehicle built. That is a Ferrari production estimate, not an independently audited lifecycle assessment, and it applies to the stated manufacturing approach rather than the entire environmental impact of operating or producing the car.

The company has invested in a dedicated e-building at Maranello for electric motors, battery packs, inverters and related vehicle production. Ferrari’s stated objective is to keep control of key EV components in-house. That vertical approach is intended to let Ferrari tune not only power and packaging, but also the sound, response and driving behavior that customers associate with the brand.
Sound, vibration and the problem of making an EV feel like a Ferrari
An electric car cannot reproduce the mechanical events of a combustion engine simply by adding a louder speaker. Ferrari’s approach combines synthetic powertrain sound with simulated vibration to provide sensory feedback to the driver.
The goal is not to claim that the Luce has an internal-combustion engine. Instead, Ferrari is trying to create a recognizable relationship between accelerator input, vehicle speed, motor response and the sensations reaching the driver. Whether that approach feels convincing will require independent road testing; the reviewed material contains no independent assessment of the Luce’s sound or vibration system.
The cabin also combines digital displays with physical switches, dials and other tactile controls. Ferrari developed the interior in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design studio associated with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and designer Marc Newson. The result is intended to keep a sense of physical interaction in a cabin that necessarily depends on extensive digital control systems.

Performance and range: impressive figures, but not yet independently verified
Public launch reports give the Luce the following headline figures:
- More than 1,000 horsepower.
- Approximately 2.5 seconds from 0–100 km/h.
- A top speed above 310 km/h.
- An estimated range of approximately 530 km, or about 329 miles.
These numbers describe the car as presented at launch. They should not be confused with results from an instrumented road test. No independent test was identified in the research used for this article, so there is currently no independently verified acceleration time, top speed, real-world range, charging time, ride assessment or handling evaluation to report.
Range will also depend on the testing standard, wheel and tire specification, temperature, speed and driving conditions. Ferrari’s high-voltage architecture and large reported battery suggest that charging capability will be a major part of the ownership proposition, but Ferrari had not published a complete charging curve or confirmed all consumer-facing charging details in the reviewed material.
Price and availability
The Luce is expected to rank among the world’s most expensive electric vehicles. Launch coverage placed the Italian starting price in an approximate range of €500,000 to €550,000. One account cited about €550,000, while other reports placed the Italian sticker price at roughly €500,000.

Ferrari had not announced a U.S. MSRP in the sources reviewed. A final U.S. price could differ substantially from the Italian figure because of market-specific taxes, equipment, transport, certification and allocation policies. The U.S. equipment specification and North American delivery schedule also remained unconfirmed.
First customer deliveries are planned for 2027. Earlier reports had mentioned October 2026, but the later delivery expectation associated with the world premiere is 2027 and should be treated as the current timetable. That is a planned date, not a guarantee that every market or customer allocation will receive a car at the same time.
What Ferrari has not confirmed yet
Several details that would matter to a prospective owner remain open:
- U.S. pricing: No confirmed American MSRP was available in the reviewed sources.
- Market-specific equipment: Ferrari had not published a complete final U.S. specification.
- Charging hardware: The reviewed material did not confirm the consumer charging connector, maximum charging rate, charging curve or home-charging requirements.
- North American deliveries: A confirmed regional schedule was not available.
- Final battery capacity: Approximately 122 kWh has been reported, but it should not be treated as a definitive Ferrari specification until officially published.
- Independent performance: No instrumented test had verified the acceleration, range, top speed, ride or handling claims.
This distinction is especially important for anyone researching charging equipment. An approximately 800-volt vehicle architecture does not establish compatibility with a particular home charger, cable or connector. A Luce-specific charging recommendation should wait for Ferrari’s final market documentation.

Ferrari has already demonstrated that it can use electrification to increase performance. The LaFerrari and SF90 Stradale established the company’s hybrid credentials. The Luce asks a more difficult question: can Ferrari preserve the brand’s emotional identity when the car has no combustion engine at all?
Ferrari’s answer involves control over the entire experience. The company is developing major electric components in-house, using a four-motor layout for precise torque management, adding active suspension and rear-wheel steering, and working on sound and vibration rather than treating the EV as a conventional luxury car with a Ferrari badge.
The car’s design has nevertheless attracted mixed reactions. The Associated Press reported skepticism from some critics and investors, including complaints that the Luce does not have the sleek sports-car proportions traditionally associated with Ferrari. The same coverage noted Ferrari’s reduction of its 2030 fully electric target from 40% of the lineup to 20%.
Those reactions are market commentary, not proof that the Luce has failed commercially. Sales, order-bank and customer-delivery data were not available in the reviewed material. The meaningful test will come later, when customers and independent testers can assess whether the Luce’s design, sound, controls, range and driving behavior justify its Ferrari positioning.

What the Luce is—and is not
The Luce is
- Ferrari’s first fully electric production model.
- A four-door, five-seat grand tourer.
- A four-motor, all-wheel-drive EV with individual-wheel control.
- A showcase for Ferrari-developed motors, inverters, battery technology and chassis systems.
- An additional powertrain and body-style choice within Ferrari’s broader range.
The Luce is not
- Ferrari’s first electrified road car; that distinction belongs to its earlier hybrid models.
- A conventional two-seat, mid-engine Ferrari.
- A confirmed replacement for Ferrari’s combustion or hybrid vehicles.
- A car with independently verified launch performance in the reviewed material.
- A vehicle with a confirmed U.S. price or published consumer charging specification at the time covered here.
The bottom line on Ferrari’s first EV
Ferrari’s first electric vehicle is the Luce, and the most important fact about it is its basic format: a five-seat, four-door grand tourer rather than a traditional two-seat supercar. Its four independent motors, more than 1,000-horsepower launch figure, active chassis systems and in-house EV development make it a serious technical statement.
The confirmed story is stronger than the headline numbers alone. Ferrari is attempting to translate its control of powertrain response, sound, tactile interaction and chassis behavior into a battery-electric car while keeping combustion and hybrid models in the lineup. Whether that translation works cannot be settled by a specification sheet. The decisive evidence will be independent testing, final charging information, customer deliveries and the car’s reception once it reaches the road in 2027.
