Underneath, it is a far stranger combination: a modified BMW motorcycle platform, BMW transmission hardware and an air-cooled Volkswagen flat-four. The “nightmare for Harley-Davidson” framing makes a catchy headline, but the available record documents an unusual custom build—not a proven rivalry with Harley.
What is a Webley-Vickers?
It is a low-volume custom motorcycle built around a Volkswagen boxer engine and BMW motorcycle components. The featured machine’s 2000cc engine is a horizontally opposed, air-cooled four-cylinder from Volkswagen; its chassis and transmission are described as modified BMW hardware. That mix gives the bike its distinctive character: cruiser or bagger styling wrapped around a mechanical foundation that is neither a conventional Harley-Davidson nor a standard BMW.
The sources do not identify the exact donor BMW model for this particular motorcycle. It should not be labeled an R50, R60 or R69 without more direct evidence.
Why does the bike say 1953 if it was built in the 1970s?
“1953” is the year associated with the motorcycle’s title or model-year label, not its reported construction date. Ultimate Motorcycling says Doug Whitson built the featured example in the 1970s and reports that he chose 1953 because it was his birth year. Mecum later cataloged it as a 1953 Webley Vickers VW2000, but that auction label does not make 1953 the bike’s build year.

How did the Volkswagen engine fit a BMW motorcycle platform?
The VW flat-four and BMW boxer share a horizontally opposed layout, but fitting a car engine into a motorcycle is not a simple bolt-in swap. The documented conversion work involved adapting the engine to motorcycle transmission and chassis hardware. Whitson acquired tooling and parts from Rodger Willis, an earlier builder of VW-powered BMW conversions, then continued the work and developed bespoke components, including a revised aluminum bellhousing.
Whitson’s operation offered both conversion kits and completed motorcycles. The surviving accounts describe a small, scattered family of these machines rather than a standardized mass-production line. CUSTOMBIKE attributes an estimate of about 90 Webley-Vickers motorcycles to a 1983 Street Chopper article; that is a reported estimate, not a verified production census.

What was unusual about the Mecum auction example?
Mecum listed the motorcycle as lot T179, a 2000cc 1953 Webley Vickers VW2000, for its January 26, 2023 auction. The archived page displays a sold marker, but it does not establish a final sale price or current owner. Mecum also cautions that advance lot details came from the consignor and are not guaranteed.
According to auction coverage, the example included dual S&S carburetors, custom gearbox ratios, hard saddlebags, mini-ape handlebars, a sprung seat and twin front disc brakes. Those details are reported specifications, not a claim of independent inspection. The bike was described as a test-bed for Whitson’s work, making its bespoke parts part of the story rather than evidence of a factory specification.

Was it really a “nightmare for Harley-Davidson”?
There is no sourced evidence here of a direct challenge to Harley-Davidson, a Harley response, or comparative road tests showing the Webley-Vickers outperforming a Harley. Nor do the available accounts establish a sales impact. The headline’s “nightmare” language is rhetoric, not a documented competitive result.
What the record does support is more interesting on its own: a builder combined Volkswagen car-engine architecture with BMW motorcycle components and gave the result a cruiser silhouette. CUSTOMBIKE reports Whitson’s claims of 2087cc and a speed above 200 km/h for his own machine, but those are builder claims and are not independently measured figures for Mecum’s auction example.
