How much has the 2023 Arteon fallen in price?
Kelley Blue Book’s page, accessed October 8, 2026, showed these original MSRPs and national typical-condition dealer purchase estimates for the 2023 Arteon. KBB says estimates vary by mileage, condition, location and equipment; its displayed estimates were valid through October 5, 2026 and are not guaranteed transaction prices.

KBB also estimated $18,185, or 45%, in depreciation over three years for the 2023 model. Its displayed private-party resale estimate was $21,500 and trade-in estimate was $19,250. Was the Arteon really a car nobody wanted?
“Nobody wanted it” overstates what the evidence shows. Car and Driver reported Volkswagen sales figures of 5,537 Arteons in the U.S. in 2021 and 1,742 in 2022. Those totals support calling it a slow-selling, uncommon model, but they do not explain why individual shoppers chose other cars. Volkswagen’s reported reason for ending it was a strategic focus on higher-volume vehicles. What makes the Arteon appealing used?
Liftback practicality
The Arteon has a large rear liftgate and generous cargo hold, making it more useful for bulky loads than a conventional sedan trunk. Its cabin is roomy, though the sloping roofline reduces rear headroom. If you regularly carry tall passengers, try the back seat before buying.
Power and equipment
KBB describes the 2023 Arteon as having a 300-hp turbocharged engine, a composed ride and standard R-Line appearance. 4Motion all-wheel drive is available, and the higher trims add upscale cabin materials and features such as three-zone climate control, navigation and a digital gauge cluster. Check the individual car’s window sticker or equipment listing: trim and drivetrain affect both price and what the car includes.

A less obvious alternative
KBB characterizes the Arteon as a semi-premium choice in an SUV-focused market with few direct rivals. It identifies the Kia Stinger as a close non-luxury comparison and the Audi A5 Sportback and Acura TLX as broader luxury comparisons. What are the trade-offs?
- Rear headroom: The sloping roof limits space above rear passengers, despite the roomy cabin.
- Fuel economy: KBB’s page describes the 2023 model at 25–28 mpg combined depending on trim and equipment. Confirm the exact configuration’s official EPA rating rather than treating that range as universal.
- Ownership costs: The available figures do not establish comparable maintenance, insurance or repair costs. Get quotes for the specific car and your circumstances instead of assuming a low purchase price means low running costs.
What should you check before buying?
Confirm recall status by VIN
Volkswagen Group of America’s February 12, 2025 filing for NHTSA recall 25V-082 covers 1,660 model-year 2023 Arteons built from January 16 through December 22, 2023. A startup error in the camera control unit may leave the rearview-camera image unavailable while reversing, violating the applicable rear-visibility standard. Inspect the individual car, not just the model’s reputation
The available sources do not establish a model-wide reliability rate or a specific common mechanical failure pattern. Judge the particular vehicle on its records and condition:
- Review title, accident history and maintenance documentation.
- Check tire and brake wear, and look for evidence of deferred maintenance.
- Test the rearview camera, infotainment and other electronics.
- Compare the asking price with current local examples of the same trim and drivetrain, adjusting for mileage, condition and equipment.
- Consider a qualified pre-purchase inspection.
When is a used Arteon a bargain?
It is a promising candidate if you want liftback cargo access, strong power and a less common alternative to an SUV, and you find a specific car whose condition and history justify its price. It is a weaker fit if rear headroom, fuel economy or predictable ownership costs matter more than those strengths. Treat KBB’s dated national values as a starting point, then compare live local listings and inspect the actual vehicle before deciding.
