The Volkswagen Arteon is a large five-door hatchback with the sleek proportions of a sedan—and recent used listings put some 2023 examples well below their original prices. That makes it worth a closer look, but it does not prove that “nobody wanted” the car or that weak demand alone caused its depreciation.
What the Volkswagen Arteon is—and what it isn’t
The Arteon looks like a sedan, but its rear liftgate opens onto a single cargo area rather than a conventional separate trunk. That five-door layout is a practical distinction: it offers the shape and access of a hatchback in a body that stands apart from more ordinary family cars.
For 2023, the Arteon had a 300-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 295 lb-ft of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Car and Driver reports front-wheel drive on the SE and standard all-wheel drive on SEL trims. The publication describes the car as smooth and controlled, with competent handling, but not a sports sedan. Car and Driver’s Arteon overview covers its specifications and driving impressions.
Why the hatchback body is part of the appeal
Cargo space
The liftback design makes the Arteon more useful for bulky cargo than its profile suggests. Car and Driver reports 27 cubic feet of cargo space and says it fit 21 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats folded. CARFAX lists 27.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 56.2 cubic feet with the seats folded. Those figures are source-specific and differ slightly, so they should not be treated as a single standardized measurement. CARFAX’s 2023 Arteon research page lists its cargo figures.

Equipment and trade-offs
Car and Driver lists an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats and a power liftgate among the equipment. Higher trims can add navigation, Harman/Kardon audio, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a surround-view camera. The sloping roofline that gives the Arteon its profile also limits rear headroom, while CARFAX identifies restricted outward visibility as a drawback.
How cheap is a used 2023 Arteon?
CARFAX’s page, captured October 8, 2026, showed an original 2023 Arteon MSRP range of $43,010–$50,175, an average listed price of $30,663 and an average CARFAX value of $31,144. Its trim-level average listed prices ranged from $26,952 for the SE R-Line to $32,059 for the SEL Premium R-Line. CARFAX says its listing data is updated daily and based on used inventory; these figures are a time-sensitive listing snapshot, not a national average transaction price or a controlled depreciation study.

Car and Driver displayed a separate used retail range of $21,495–$36,280 for 2023 Arteons. That range is another source-specific snapshot, not a price target for every car. Mileage, condition, accident and service history, trim and location all affect what a particular example is worth. The difference between the two sources also shows why there is no single meaningful “Arteon price.”
Did nobody want the Arteon?
The available evidence supports a more careful explanation than the headline’s shorthand. The Arteon occupied a niche: it was a relatively expensive Volkswagen with sedan-like styling at a time when automakers were moving away from sedans and Volkswagen was expanding its SUV lineup. Car and Driver called the Arteon the most expensive car in Volkswagen’s lineup and described its asking price as stiff for its class. MotorTrend has also framed affordable performance sedans as a niche category. These observations help explain why a distinctive car might face a narrower audience, but they do not establish how many shoppers rejected the Arteon or how much that affected resale prices.

No model sales series, residual-value study or year-by-year comparison of listings is established here to show that weak demand caused a particular depreciation rate. A lower used asking price is observable; “nobody wanted one” is not a measured explanation for it.
What to check before buying one
Compare like with like rather than relying on an average price. An SE with front-wheel drive is not the same proposition as an all-wheel-drive SEL, and equipment varies by trim. Before making an offer, check:

- Accident and service history, plus the condition of the tires and wheels.
- Whether the trim’s equipment and drivetrain fit your needs, including FWD versus AWD.
- Fuel economy: Car and Driver reports an EPA estimate of 25–28 mpg combined, depending on drivetrain.
- Remaining warranty. Car and Driver reports coverage of four years or 50,000 miles; confirm the in-service date and VIN-specific terms rather than assuming a used car still has full coverage.
- Whether the hatch’s cargo access matters more to you than the rear headroom and outward-visibility compromises.
Verify tire fitment by vehicle, not by model name
Car and Driver lists Continental ProContact TX tires in size 245/35R-20 on its tested 2022 Arteon SEL R-Line 4Motion configuration. That example does not establish fitment for every Arteon or wheel package. Before buying replacement tires, check the vehicle’s tire placard and confirm the correct size, load index and speed rating for that specific car.
