The 2025 U.S. Volkswagen ID. Buzz makes an electric family van feel special: its Microbus-inspired design, airy three-row cabin and comfortable ride stand out. Its compromises matter just as much. EPA-estimated range is 231–234 miles depending on drivetrain, highway tests have fallen short of those estimates, and the three-row layout limits cargo flexibility. It is best suited to buyers who prize character and passenger space, have convenient charging, and can make the range and price work for their trips.
What the 2025 U.S. ID. Buzz is
The ID. Buzz is a long-wheelbase, all-electric passenger van sold in the United States with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Car and Driver describes six- and seven-seat configurations. Its styling deliberately recalls Volkswagen’s historic Type 2 Microbus, but this is a modern three-row family vehicle rather than a utility van. Volkswagen’s U.S. technical sheet covers a cited 2025 1st Edition configuration; specifications and equipment can vary by trim and drivetrain.
Range is the biggest practical drawback
Volkswagen of America’s October 23, 2024 technical sheet gives the cited 2025 1st Edition an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles. Volkswagen cautions that actual range varies with driving and charging habits, temperature and weather, battery age, accessory use, terrain, load and vehicle condition. Car and Driver’s 2025 review lists EPA estimates of 231 miles for AWD and up to 234 miles for RWD. These are estimates, not promises of how far the van will travel in every circumstance.
Highway tests came in lower
In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway test, the AWD ID. Buzz traveled 190 miles and the RWD version 180 miles. Those are that publication’s test results, not EPA ratings or guaranteed owner outcomes. In a separate test, MotorTrend reported 213 miles in a road-trip range test of its 2025 RWD long-term-test vehicle, 15 miles below the 234-mile EPA rating. The publications used different procedures, so the results should not be treated as directly comparable.

Highway speed, weather, route, passenger and cargo load, and test procedure all affect an EV’s range. For buyers who regularly take long trips, the useful question is not just whether the EPA figure covers a typical day, but whether the van’s real-world range and charging stops suit their actual routes.
What makes the Buzz appealing
Distinctive design and an airy cabin
The retro design is the ID. Buzz’s most obvious distinction. Inside, its high seating position and three rows create a notably open passenger space. Car and Driver describes the ride as comfortable and acceleration as lively, particularly in AWD form. It also notes standard massage front seats and configurable interior details. These are reviewer impressions, not a claim that every buyer will experience the cabin or ride the same way.

Passenger space comes with a packing compromise
The six- and seven-seat layouts give buyers different ways to carry passengers, but the number of seats is only part of the family-van question: consider who will use each row and how much luggage must fit when every seat is occupied. Consumer Reports’ visible search-result summary says the seats do not fold into the floor, a limitation that can reduce cargo flexibility. Its summary does not establish a detailed U.S. cargo-volume figure or specify the exact seat configuration, so do not assume a particular packing capacity from it.
Volkswagen Canada’s 2025 webpage lists 4,120 L of cargo space, but that is a Canadian-market figure; its measurement basis and configuration are not established here. It should not be used as the U.S. model’s cargo specification. For a family that often travels with all three rows in use, check the U.S. vehicle’s configuration and test it with the luggage, stroller or sports gear you need to carry.

Price and value need a close look
Consumer Reports’ visible summary characterizes the cost of entry as high and points to the Kia EV9 as a longer-range three-row alternative. That is the outlet’s assessment; its full report was not available, so more detailed claims about its comparison are not established here. Current transaction prices, incentives and inventory change over time and have not been verified for this review.
Compare vehicles using the same criteria: purchase price after incentives available to you, EPA and independently tested range, charging access and trip time, comfort in each row, cargo space with all seats occupied, and the ability to fold or remove seats. The Kia EV9 is a relevant electric-SUV alternative; the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are conventional minivans named by Car and Driver as competitors. Verify current specifications, pricing and incentives before making a direct value comparison.

Charging: plan around your home and routes
Car and Driver lists an 11.0 kW onboard charger for the AWD specification it reviewed. That is the vehicle’s listed onboard charging capacity, not a promise that every home charging setup will deliver that rate. Volkswagen’s U.S. technical sheet says charging time depends in part on the home charger’s rate. Connector compatibility, circuit capacity, installation and the vehicle’s charging limits matter, too.
If you are considering home Level 2 charging, check the charger’s compatibility with the model year and have a qualified installer assess your electrical service and installation needs. For public charging, consider where you can reliably charge along the trips you actually make rather than assuming a charger will always be available at a convenient stop.

Car and Driver reports inconsistent brake-pedal feel and some highway noise in its review. Treat these as observations from that publication’s test, not evidence of widespread defects. If either point matters to you, pay attention to braking feel and cabin noise during a test drive on roads similar to your regular routes.
Quick Recap
Who should consider the ID. Buzz?
- It may suit you if you want a distinctive three-row electric passenger van, value an airy cabin and comfortable ride, and can charge conveniently.
- Think carefully if your regular journeys involve long highway stretches, if you need to carry substantial luggage with all seats occupied, or if your budget makes the high cost of entry a concern.
- Compare alternatives if maximum range, cargo flexibility or purchase value matters more than the Buzz’s design and van character. Consider the Kia EV9 alongside conventional minivans such as the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, using current, verified figures.
