The UNICAT Individual MD56c is a heavy-duty expedition motorhome, not an oversized campground RV. Built on a MAN TGS 26.540 6x6x4 chassis, it combines 540 hp, three driven axles, roughly 600 liters of fresh water, a 980-liter diesel tank, a 24.6-kWh lithium battery bank, and a rear carrier designed for a side-by-side or two motorcycles.
Contemporary coverage placed the bespoke vehicle at approximately $1.5 million. A German specification report listed about €1.4 million including VAT. Those are reported historical figures—not a confirmed 2026 MSRP or current order price. A new build would depend on its specification, chassis, equipment, taxes, and destination country.

What is the UNICAT MD56c?
The MD56c is UNICAT’s Individual expedition motorhome built around a MAN TGS 26.540 6x6x4 truck chassis. It is designed to function as a self-contained base camp in remote areas, carrying its own living quarters, water, fuel, electrical storage, and secondary off-road vehicle.

The “6x6x4” description is significant. The truck has six driven wheels, while the third axle also steers. That configuration gives the MD56c more traction and maneuverability than a conventional rear-wheel-drive motorhome, although it does not make the vehicle universally capable. At approximately 8.16 meters long, 2.49 meters wide, and 3.66 meters high, it remains a very large vehicle with substantial access limitations.

MAN TGS 6×6 platform and off-road equipment
Power comes from a 12.4-liter six-cylinder diesel producing 397 kW, or 540 hp, in the Euro 5 configuration documented by UNICAT. A 12-speed ZF TipMatic gearbox sends power through a two-speed transfer case. The truck also has all-wheel drive, axle differential locks, and a 980-liter diesel tank.
| Specification | Reported figure or equipment |
|---|---|
| Chassis | MAN TGS 26.540 6x6x4 |
| Engine | 12.4-liter six-cylinder diesel |
| Output | 397 kW / 540 hp |
| Transmission | 12-speed ZF TipMatic |
| Transfer case | Two-speed |
| Fuel capacity | 980 liters, approximately 258.8 U.S. gallons |
| Tires | 14.00 R20 tubeless off-road tires |
| Running weight | Approximately 19,800 kg in one German specification report |
| Gross vehicle weight | Approximately 23,000 kg |
| Reported payload | Approximately 3,200 kg |
The chassis is equipped with a low-range transfer case, central and axle differential locks, central tire inflation, beadlock-style wheels, large off-road tires, and a manually retractable rear underride guard. These systems are intended to preserve traction and protect the truck in difficult terrain.
However, a locking differential and low range cannot overcome every physical constraint. The MD56c’s width can make narrow trails impossible, its height can be a problem under branches and bridges, and its mass increases braking, recovery, and ground-pressure demands. The rear loading platform also changes the vehicle’s length and departure geometry. It is an expedition truck built to reach remote camps—not a guarantee that every off-road route is accessible.

Dimensions and torsion-aware body mounting
The living module measures approximately 5,600 mm long, 2,480 mm wide, and 2,105 mm high externally. Its internal dimensions are about 5,480 by 2,360 by 1,950 mm. Reported overall vehicle dimensions are approximately 8,160 mm long, 2,490 mm wide, and 3,660 mm high.
One German report gives a running weight of approximately 19,800 kg and a gross vehicle weight of 23,000 kg, leaving a stated payload of around 3,200 kg. Those figures matter because water, fuel, passengers, food, tools, recovery equipment, spare parts, and the carried recreational vehicle all consume payload.
UNICAT attaches the body using a three-point kinematic mounting system. The purpose is to let the truck frame flex and articulate without transferring damaging torsional stress directly into the rigid living module. The module itself uses self-supporting fiberglass-composite sandwich panels, with documented 60-mm walls made from polyurethane-foam insulation between fiberglass-reinforced plastic skins. The floor includes an integrated welded-steel frame and additional insulation.
A flexible waterproof bellows connects the truck cab and living area. Occupants can move between the cab and module without stepping outside, while a separate side entrance is reached by a teak-topped staircase.

Inside: a compact apartment for four to six occupants
The title’s reference to four people is a practical use case, not the only occupancy configuration described in the documentation. The German brochure lists four to six seats in the living module, plus two front seats and two emergency seats in the cab. The module has two sleeping areas.
At the front, a dinette uses two longitudinal benches and a height-adjustable table. Lowering the table converts the seating area into a bed measuring approximately 140 by 200 cm. A separate heated rear bed measures approximately 160 by 200 cm.
That arrangement provides two permanent-style sleeping zones, but the vehicle should not be confused with a six-person family motorhome in terms of everyday living space. Four occupants would have considerably more practical room than six, especially during bad weather when everyone is inside. The internal height of approximately 1,950 mm is usable for many adults but is not especially generous for a vehicle of this exterior size.
Kitchen, bathroom, and climate control
The kitchen is equipped more like a small apartment than a basic camper galley. Published specifications describe:

- A stainless-steel sink
- Microwave or oven equipment
- A dishwasher
- A 130-liter refrigerator
- A 65-liter freezer
- Storage with anti-slip dish dividers for rough-road travel
The anti-slip storage is an important expedition detail. Ordinary residential cabinets and crockery can become a liability when a vehicle spends hours on corrugations, rocks, and uneven tracks. Keeping kitchen equipment restrained reduces movement and breakage.
The bathroom is split into a separate shower compartment and a toilet or washroom area. The reported equipment includes a porcelain toilet, washbasin, approximately 110 liters of black-water capacity, and a separate shower with a heated towel rail.
Heating is supplied by a diesel system with hot-water equipment. The published English specifications also list a 2.3-kW air-conditioning unit. Frost-protected plumbing and insulated composite construction are intended to support travel in varied climates, but the available material does not establish an independently tested minimum or maximum operating temperature. It would be inaccurate to describe the MD56c as proven for every climate without a defined test standard.

Off-grid power: 24.6 kWh of lithium storage and roof solar
The electrical system is built around a reported 24.6-kWh lithium battery bank, dual inverters, monitoring equipment, and an approximately 1,850-watt roof-mounted solar array. A Honda portable generator is described as backup power.
That is a substantial system for a motorhome, but the often-repeated two-week autonomy claim needs context. It should be understood as a design target or manufacturer/media description rather than a universal endurance guarantee. Actual runtime depends on the load profile.
Heating and air conditioning can dominate energy use. Cooking, refrigeration, freezer operation, lighting, water pumping, electronics, battery charging, and generator use also affect endurance. Cloud cover and shading reduce solar production, while frequent driving may change the balance by allowing other charging methods. Water and food supplies can run out before the battery does, and a two-week claim does not mean four people can live indefinitely without resupply.
For ordinary RV or van owners who are interested in the same basic idea at a much smaller scale, a portable solar generator for camping can provide supplementary power for electronics, lights, or selected appliances. It is not an equivalent replacement for the MD56c’s integrated 24.6-kWh system: consumer units are generally far smaller, have different charging and output limits, and may not support large heating or cooling loads.
A retrofit RV solar panel kit is another way to explore supplemental charging in a conventional camper. Any installation requires checking roof space, panel voltage, charge-controller compatibility, battery chemistry, wiring, fusing, inverter capacity, and professional installation requirements. Nothing in the available specifications establishes that a retail kit is compatible with the MD56c itself.

The documented description identifies a Honda portable generator but does not establish the exact model or its current availability in any particular country. Anyone choosing a portable inverter generator for RV backup power should consider output, fuel type, ventilation, noise, exhaust safety, load management, and local regulations rather than assuming that any portable generator can be integrated into an expedition truck.
Water, sanitation, and diesel range
The MD56c carries two 300-liter fresh-water tanks, giving approximately 600 liters of fresh water in total. The reported waste capacities are about 175 liters for gray water and 110 liters for black water. Filtration and pumping equipment are included, and the plumbing is described as frost-protected.
Six hundred liters provides meaningful autonomy, but consumption varies sharply. Drinking, cooking, shower length, dishwashing, laundry, flushing, leaks, and the availability of water-recycling practices all affect how long the supply lasts. Waste tanks can become the practical limit even when fresh water remains.
The 980-liter diesel tank is one of the vehicle’s most striking numbers. New Atlas reported a potential range of up to roughly 3,300 km, or about 2,000 miles. That should be treated as an upper-end reported estimate, not a guaranteed journey distance. Terrain, payload, speed, tire pressure, weather, idling, and driving style can materially change fuel consumption. Off-road travel is particularly difficult to compare with highway range.
The rear carrier is the real expedition advantage
The rear platform makes the MD56c more useful than its horsepower figure alone suggests. The truck can establish a comfortable base camp while a smaller vehicle handles narrow trails, local exploration, or terrain unsuitable for an eight-meter-plus, nearly 20-ton truck.

Published descriptions say the carrier can accommodate a side-by-side or two motorcycles, along with a spare tire. The title calls the carried vehicle an ATV, but the more precise description supported by the available material is a side-by-side or small off-road vehicle. No particular quad, ATV, or side-by-side model should be assumed to fit.
Before carrying any specific machine, the owner would need to confirm the platform’s rated payload, usable dimensions, ramp arrangement, tie-down points, axle loading, and the loaded vehicle’s effect on gross weight and balance. The carrier’s length—reported at roughly 1,890 mm in the extended or included configuration—also has implications for maneuvering and departure clearance.
For overlanding readers building a smaller transport setup, ATV tie-down straps and other recovery or securement equipment are relevant categories, but no retail product should be treated as certified for the MD56c without checking its working load limit, attachment geometry, and the carrier manufacturer’s requirements. Tie-downs are not a substitute for correctly rated recovery points, and recovery equipment must be selected for the actual vehicle mass and recovery method.
Why it is not a normal RV
A conventional motorhome is usually optimized for paved roads, campgrounds, public utilities, manageable dimensions, and relatively easy servicing. The MD56c prioritizes a different set of requirements:
- Remote travel: six-wheel drive, low range, differential locks, tire-control equipment, and large off-road tires.
- Long periods away from utilities: large fuel and water reserves plus battery, solar, and generator capacity.
- Structural durability: a composite living module and three-point mounting designed around truck-frame flex.
- Base-camp mobility: a rear carrier for a side-by-side or motorcycles.
- Residential comfort: a separate shower, dishwasher, large refrigerator and freezer, two sleeping areas, and climate equipment.
The tradeoff is that the same hardware makes the truck expensive, heavy, mechanically complex, and difficult to place. Ordinary parking lots, ferries, bridges, narrow roads, low clearances, and many trails may be unsuitable. Fuel, tires, suspension, driveline, hydraulic, electrical, and water systems also require more specialized maintenance than a conventional RV.
Licensing, registration, importation, insurance, emissions compliance, and road restrictions vary by country and vehicle registration. The available research does not establish a current U.S.-specific answer, so buyers should resolve those issues with the relevant authorities and an experienced importer before committing to a build.

Who is the MD56c actually for?
The MD56c makes sense for a narrow group of buyers: people who need to spend extended periods far from infrastructure, want a genuinely residential interior, require serious truck-based off-road capability, and can support the purchase and maintenance of a highly specialized vehicle.
It is less sensible for someone whose travel consists mainly of highways, established campgrounds, or occasional forest roads. A smaller 4×4 camper can be easier to ship, fuel, park, repair, and legally operate. The MD56c’s value lies not in being the most convenient RV, but in combining a substantial apartment-like cabin with the ability to carry its own exploration vehicle and supplies deep into remote territory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the UNICAT MD56c really a $1.5 million motorhome?
Contemporary reports placed the documented vehicle at approximately $1.5 million, while a German specification report listed about €1.4 million including VAT. Those are historical reported figures, not a confirmed 2026 price. A current quotation would depend on the build specification, taxes, and destination country.
How many people can sleep in the MD56c?
The living module has a rear bed measuring approximately 160 by 200 cm and a dinette that converts into a roughly 140 by 200 cm bed. The German brochure lists four to six seats in the module and two sleeping places there. Four people are a practical use case; the available information does not establish the vehicle as a comfortable six-person long-term home.
Does the MD56c carry an ATV?
The rear carrier is described as large enough for a side-by-side or two motorcycles, plus a spare tire. The exact fit for a particular ATV or quad is not established. Buyers must verify the machine’s dimensions, weight, tie-down requirements, platform rating, and the truck’s payload and axle limits.
Can the MD56c run off-grid for two weeks?
The published two-week autonomy claim is not an independently tested guarantee. The vehicle has a reported 24.6-kWh lithium battery bank, approximately 1,850 watts of solar, a backup generator, and large water and fuel reserves, but actual endurance depends on weather, heating and cooling, cooking, refrigeration, water use, driving, and generator operation.
Is the UNICAT MD56c available to order in 2026?
The reviewed sources do not confirm current 2026 production status, lead time, availability, or price. Prospective buyers need to contact UNICAT and verify the current build program, chassis and emissions specification, import requirements, registration, and service support for their country.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The UNICAT MD56c is an extreme expedition platform that combines a MAN 6x6x4 truck, a highly equipped living module, substantial off-grid reserves, and a carrier for a smaller off-road vehicle. Its reported $1.5 million price reflects the bespoke nature of the machine, not a current standard MSRP. It offers remarkable independence, but its size, weight, cost, maintenance demands, and access limits are just as important as its 540 hp and six-wheel drive.
