The U.S. electric-pickup market has a real upfront affordability gap: the Department of Energy estimated that a battery-electric pickup costs $18,800 more to buy than a comparable gasoline or diesel pickup, in 2024 dollars. That is a class-level estimate, not a price difference for any particular pair of trucks. For buyers looking at the 2026 market, announced starting prices for two electric pickups from GM begin above $54,000, while federal consumer clean-vehicle credits no longer apply to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
Why an affordable electric truck is still missing
The price gap is not just a matter of comparing a particular electric pickup with a particular gas model. In its 2025 analysis, the U.S. Department of Energy estimated the incremental purchase cost of a battery-electric pickup at $18,800 over a comparable internal-combustion pickup, expressed in 2024 dollars. DOE defines incremental cost as the clean vehicle’s purchase price minus the price of a comparable ICE vehicle. It is a category estimate, not a guaranteed premium for every model or buyer. DOE’s 2025 cost methodology and results explain the comparison.
That difference matters most to shoppers who need a practical work truck or everyday pickup but cannot absorb a substantially higher purchase price in exchange for potential operating-cost savings. For them, an electric truck needs to be affordable at the point of sale—not merely competitive after years of ownership.
What do 2026 electric truck prices look like?
GM announced these starting-price benchmarks for its 2026 electric pickups. They are manufacturer starting MSRPs, not confirmed local transaction prices or proof of dealer inventory.

Trim, options, destination charges, fees, dealer discounts, and available inventory can change the comparison. Can buyers count on a federal electric truck tax credit?
No—not for a vehicle acquired in October 2026. The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center says the federal consumer clean-vehicle credits described on its page applied to vehicles acquired before September 30, 2025. A buyer planning an October 2026 purchase should not subtract one of those expired consumer credits from the expected price. The AFDC tax-credit page also covers charging-infrastructure incentives; check its current rules and eligibility details.

- Out-the-door price: Ask for the vehicle price, destination charge, options, dealer fees, taxes, and any discount in writing. Compare quotes from local dealers rather than starting MSRPs alone.
- Work and passenger fit: Check cab and bed layout, payload, towing needs, and whether the truck’s configuration suits your routine. Do not assume that a future model will meet a particular requirement before its specifications are published.
- Range and charging: Compare official range and charging specifications for the exact model year, trim, and battery configuration. A model-level headline may not describe the version you can buy.
- Purchase timing: Separate vehicles currently orderable from announced future products without firm availability dates. A lower future price is not useful for a purchase that cannot wait.
Include home charging in the ownership budget
A home Level 2 charger and installation may add to the cost of switching, and installation eligibility or incentives can depend on location and program rules. Before buying equipment, confirm that it meets the truck’s connector and electrical requirements, and get installation guidance for your home. The AFDC’s charging-infrastructure tax-credit information describes potential credits but does not establish a universal installation price or guarantee eligibility for every buyer.
Electricity rates, installation work, and local incentives vary, so calculate them using your circumstances rather than assuming a standard savings figure. A vehicle’s purchase price and the cost of setting up charging are separate parts of the affordability question.
