The color was developed around 1968, appeared prominently on the company’s U.S. factory team at Daytona in 1969, and soon became a lasting racing and brand identity. Kawasaki also embraced a color that some racing circles and Western audiences considered unlucky.
Why did Kawasaki choose green?
The company’s stated practical reasons were visibility in racing and stronger product recognition. Kawasaki Motors Corp.’s U.S. heritage timeline says the color was selected in 1969 to increase visibility at races. Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ account traces the request to 1968, when a U.S.-based affiliated sales company sought color proposals to help customers recognize Kawasaki products.
That explanation comes from Kawasaki’s own histories, not from a published controlled study measuring how much more visible the bikes became. It establishes the company’s intended purpose, rather than a quantified visibility effect. Kawasaki Motors Corp. heritage timeline · Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ history
Why choose a color some racers considered unlucky?
Kawasaki’s 2016 account says green was avoided at some tracks because of superstition and folkways. Kawasaki Heavy Industries likewise describes lime green as a color considered unpleasant and unlucky in some Western countries. Those accounts are geographically and culturally qualified: they do not mean all racers or fans everywhere regarded green as unlucky.

- Versatile Detailing Maintenance Tool: Suitable for motorcycles, helmets, goggles, trim, and other exterior surfaces that require scratch repair and polishing, making it a practical solution for restoration projects and regular vehicle care routines
- Compact Portable Repair Solution: Convenient 35ml size fits easily into detailing kits, toolboxes, or travel gear bags, allowing quick scratch correction and polishing whenever maintenance or restoration work is needed
Choosing it anyway made the scheme unconventional and daring, while its conspicuous appearance served Kawasaki’s recognition goal. The folklore adds context to the decision; Kawasaki’s stated practical rationale remains visibility and recognition. Kawasaki’s 2016 account · Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ history
Who developed Kawasaki’s green-and-white racing look?
Kawasaki’s U.S. account credits a team working under the direction of National Sales Manager Don Graves and National Marketing Manager Paul Collins. Akashi designer Chris Kurishima and Los Angeles-area custom painter Rollin Sanders, known as “Paint by Molly,” developed several proposals, including the familiar green-and-white combination. KMC management approved the color.

- 1968 — origin and development: Kawasaki Heavy Industries dates the origin of the lime-green look to a U.S. affiliate’s request for proposals. Its account also captions an A1R as the first model to use the color.
- 1969 — prominent U.S. racing debut: Kawasaki’s U.S. timeline records the color choice as a way to increase visibility at races. The factory team’s Daytona Bike Week appearance made the scheme conspicuous to U.S. audiences.
- 1969 — production use: Kawasaki identifies the F21M Greenstreak as its first production motorcycle painted Lime Green.
In short, Kawasaki’s parent-company history places the origin in 1968; the U.S. company’s accounts emphasize the factory team’s 1969 Daytona appearance. Those descriptions can coexist because development and prominent public team use are not the same milestone. How did a racing color become a brand identity?
Kawasaki says Lime Green continued across road racing, motocross, and off-road competition, then appeared on street motorcycles, ATVs, and Jet Ski watercraft. Its current U.S. racing-program page still uses the color as a way for fans to identify Kawasaki on track. Program rules and eligible models may change, so that page—not the historical accounts—is the place to check current requirements. Kawasaki U.S. racing program · Kawasaki’s 2016 account
