The Maserati Trident refers to the weapon held by Neptune in Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune. It also entered the story as a racing badge: the emblem appeared on the Tipo 26 in 1926, the same year the car competed at the Targa Florio. Its meaning therefore joins the city where Maserati began with the motorsport identity the company was building.
What does the Maserati Trident mean?
The emblem is based on the trident in the hand of Neptune’s statue at the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, the city where Maserati’s first workshop was located. Maserati describes the logo as “a symbol deeply rooted in the city’s identity.” The reference connects the marque to its home city rather than to a separate meaning for each of the trident’s three prongs.
Maserati’s historical account also associates Neptune’s trident with “strength and vigour,” and says the symbol was hoped to bring good fortune and success. That is the brand’s interpretation of the emblem, not a universal definition of the mythological symbol.
Who designed it, and when did it first appear?
Mario Maserati, the artist in the family and not directly involved in the automotive business, drew the first version in 1925. Maserati dates the emblem’s official birth to 1926, when it first appeared on the Tipo 26. These dates distinguish the initial drawing from the badge’s public debut.

Why is the Maserati logo a trident?
The choice linked Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune to a new car brand. It also gave Maserati a badge that debuted in competition, not just a symbol added later to evoke performance. At the 1926 Targa Florio, Alfieri Maserati drove the Tipo 26 to first place in the 1,500 cc class and eighth place overall, according to Maserati’s centenary account.
The Trident’s connection to racing continued through the company’s later motorsport history. Maserati’s centenary account reports two Indianapolis 500 victories, in 1939 and 1940; four consecutive Targa Florio victories, from 1937 through 1940; nine Formula 1 wins; and Juan Manuel Fangio’s 1957 Formula 1 World Championship. These are figures reported by Maserati, and they provide context for why the emblem became closely associated with the marque’s competition heritage.

How has the Trident badge changed?
The emblem’s basic symbol remained recognizable while its badge design evolved:
- 1926: The Tipo 26 carried a rectangular badge with a dark Trident on a light background.
- Early 1930s: The design shifted toward an oval and incorporated Bologna’s red and blue.
- 1980: Maserati says a version with a gold background was introduced.
- 1997: The logo was redesigned.
The visual history adds a civic detail to the emblem: its colors, as well as its central figure, tie it to Bologna.

What the Trident does—and does not—stand for
The strongest supported reading brings together three related ideas: Neptune’s statue in Bologna as the visual source, Maserati’s attributed interpretation of strength and vigor, and a racing identity established when the Tipo 26 carried the badge in competition.
