The Toyota RAV4 began in 1994 as a compact 4WD designed to combine passenger-car ease with light off-road ability. Toyota’s Japan announcements mark major redesigns in 2000, 2005 and 2019; the company revealed the sixth generation in May 2025 and launched it in Japan that December. Those dates are Toyota Japan milestones, not universal model-year boundaries: timing and equipment differ by market.
What are the generations of the Toyota RAV4?
Toyota’s May 2025 world-premiere materials show a concept followed by five generations; the company unveiled the sixth generation at that event. The documented milestones below follow Toyota announcements. They describe the evolution of the vehicle without implying that every market changed generations in the same model year.

How the RAV4 changed from generation to generation
First generation: a passenger car with 4WD intent
Toyota announced the original RAV4 on May 10, 1994, expanding the name as “Recreational Active Vehicle with 4WD.” Its construction and positioning expressed the central idea: a monocoque body and independent suspension on all four wheels paired with full-time four-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter engine. Rather than framing it as a traditional rugged 4×4, Toyota pitched it as a blend of conventional passenger-car characteristics and light off-road capability.
At the 2025 world premiere, Toyota design head Simon Humphries described the first generation as “streetwise but ready for the outdoors.”

Second generation: an urban SUV with global reach
In May 2000, Toyota announced redesigned RAV4 L and RAV4 J models as the second generation. The release described the RAV4 as an urban SUV and noted that it had become a global model. This is a Toyota Japan announcement milestone; it does not by itself establish when each regional market adopted the redesign.
Third generation: active-lifestyle positioning
Toyota announced the third generation in November 2005, describing it as designed for an active lifestyle. Its stated brief paired urban styling with utility for outdoor use, continuing the original mix of everyday use and recreational capability.

Fourth generation: chronology needs market-specific sources
The Toyota announcements summarized here do not provide enough detail to build a reliable fourth-generation specification or a complete timeline across Japan, the United States, Europe and other markets. For identifying a particular vehicle, use its market, production details and vehicle documentation rather than assuming that a Japan announcement date sets the model-year boundary everywhere.

Toyota’s April 2019 Japan announcement described the redesigned fifth generation as based on the TNGA platform and offered Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD on specified grades. The same release said Toyota Safety Sense was standard in all models in that announcement’s market context. That equipment statement should not be generalized to every fifth-generation vehicle, grade, model year or country.

Sixth generation: Japan launch followed the 2025 reveal
Toyota unveiled the sixth generation on May 21, 2025, then launched it in Japan in December 2025. Its Japan announcement named Z, Adventure and GR SPORT grades, and HEV and planned PHEV powertrains. The release included timing qualifications for some offerings; availability and launch timing can vary by market and change over time.
Which generation is my RAV4?
There is no single worldwide model-year chart established by these Toyota announcements. Their dates identify Japanese announcement or launch milestones, not a universal point when every market changed over. To determine a vehicle’s generation reliably:

- Start with the country where it was sold new. Generation labels and model-year transitions may not line up across markets.
- Check the vehicle’s model year and production information. Use the owner’s documents or the identification information on the vehicle, then compare it with Toyota’s regional records or a dealer’s parts or service lookup.
- Confirm the body and grade against a market-specific source. Similar model years can include different equipment and powertrains by country or trim.
- Do not use the Japan dates as a substitute for regional confirmation. The 2000, 2005, 2019 and 2025 milestones above are useful reference points, but do not establish every market’s exact start and end years.
How Toyota describes the RAV4’s global scale
At its May 21, 2025 world premiere, Toyota said the RAV4 had been sold in 180 countries and regions and that 15 million units had been sold over 30 years. These are figures stated by Toyota at that event, not an independently audited or updated total.
