Its story offers context for Toyota’s later performance sedans, but the available evidence does not establish the Cressida as a direct engineering ancestor of the Camry TRD.
Where the Cressida sat in Toyota’s range
Toyota UK’s account places the Cressida in the middle ground of its mid-to-large family saloons, between the Corona and the Crown. The Crown was the UK range’s luxury flagship, so the Cressida is best understood as a substantial, comparatively upscale family car—not the flagship itself. These descriptions apply to Toyota UK’s range at the time, not every market where the Cressida name was used. Toyota UK’s retrospective describes the period’s saloons as front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars.
Two UK generations, related to the Mark II
First UK generation: 1977
The European-specification Cressida introduced in summer 1977 was, in Toyota UK’s description, technically a rebadged relative of Japan’s third-generation Mark II. The shared relationship helps explain why Cressida specifications and naming should be read in their regional context rather than treated as a single global specification.
Second UK generation: 1980
A second UK generation arrived in 1980 and was related to the fourth-generation Mark II. Toyota UK counts 15,269 Cressidas sold across the two generations before the nameplate was withdrawn from the UK market in 1983. That is a UK sales total, not a worldwide production figure.

Why the Cressida left the UK range
Toyota UK’s retrospective describes a broader shift: traditional rear-wheel-drive saloons were facing competition from more space-efficient front-wheel-drive family cars. The Camry was among the cars emerging in that changing market. This gives useful context for the Cressida’s era, but it does not prove that the Camry directly replaced the Cressida in every country or followed it everywhere in Toyota’s lineup.
What connects the Cressida to the Camry TRD?
The connection is best understood as continuity in Toyota’s wider interest in capable sedans and performance development—not a documented Cressida-to-Camry-TRD engineering lineage. Toyota’s U.S. newsroom identifies the 2020 model year as the first Camry offered as a TRD performance model. It specified a direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 rated at 301 hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic, and described chassis development and testing as part of the track-tuned treatment. Those figures describe the U.S. 2020 Camry TRD, not a current Camry specification. Toyota’s 2020 Camry TRD announcement provides the model details.

Toyota says Toyota Racing Development U.S.A. was established in 1979 to improve production vehicles for more performance. In 2019, Toyota described the Camry and Avalon as the first Toyota sedans to receive comprehensive track-tuned TRD enhancements. Together, these milestones show Toyota’s performance work reaching mainstream sedans; they do not establish that the Cressida informed the Camry TRD’s engineering. Toyota’s TRD history and its 2019 sedan announcement cover those developments.
How the cars compare—and why market matters
| Car and market snapshot | Role in the range | Drivetrain or performance details established here |
|---|---|---|
| UK Cressida, 1977–1983 | Toyota UK placed it between the Corona and Crown; the Crown was the luxury flagship. | Toyota UK describes the period’s saloons as front-engine, rear-wheel drive; do not generalize that statement to all Cressidas. |
| Japanese Camry, 1994 | Toyota’s archive calls it a simple medium-class saloon. | The cited archive is context for the Japanese fifth-generation Camry, not proof of a global Cressida replacement. |
| U.S. Camry TRD, 2020 model year | First Camry offered as a TRD performance model. | 301-hp 3.5-liter V6, eight-speed automatic, and track-tuned chassis development, according to Toyota. |
The snapshots are from different countries and years, so they describe distinct roles rather than a single worldwide succession. Toyota’s 1994 Camry archive is specifically about the Japanese model.

For Cressida owners looking for manuals or parts
Fitment can depend on year, market, body style and chassis, so identify the vehicle by its documents and chassis or VIN before ordering references or parts. Catalogs list Cressida records by chassis series and production period, and manual catalogs include year-specific materials; those listings establish that references exist, not that a particular part is in stock or will fit an individual car.
