The revival is not yet a production-car reveal: four-wheel drive is the clearest reported specification, while the engine, hybrid system, release date, price and launch markets remain unconfirmed.
Is the Toyota Celica coming back?
Yes. Toyota confirmed the Celica’s return at Rally Japan in 2024, according to Autocar. In a June 2026 interview with Top Gear, Toyota executive vice president Hiroki Nakajima spoke about developing the car and called it his dream. His remarks reinforce that development is underway, but they are not a launch announcement or a reveal of a finished production model.
The distinction matters: Toyota has confirmed the project, but the available statements do not settle when customers will be able to buy one or what the final car will be.
What has Toyota confirmed about the new Celica?
Four-wheel drive is the strongest reported specification
Autocar reported in March 2026 that a Toyota spokesperson confirmed four-wheel drive for the new car. That is the clearest technical detail attributed to Toyota in the available coverage; it does not establish the full drivetrain or other specifications. Autocar also reported that the car was being referred to as “Celica Sport,” but that should be treated as a working name, not a confirmed retail name.

Engine and hybrid system are still undecided
Toyota Gazoo Racing marketing manager Mikio Hayashi told Autocar that Toyota was considering different engine sizes. He said the 1.6-litre engine used in the GR Yaris could not meet emissions regulations, and that a 2.0-litre engine was among the possibilities. Toyota had not settled on an engine size or whether the car would use a standard hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid. A 2.0-litre hybrid is therefore a possibility, not a confirmed specification.
Those open questions leave important details unanswered, including output, transmission, fuel economy and whether any powertrain configuration will be offered in every market.

When will the new Celica be released?
No release date or launch window is confirmed in the cited reporting. Hayashi told Autocar, “We cannot point to a timeline but can say we are making steady progress.” Nakajima’s “Near, near future” comment to Top Gear expresses intent, but it does not provide a calendar date. Treat specific launch-year claims as speculation unless Toyota announces a schedule.
What might the new Celica cost, and where will it be sold?
Toyota has not established a price or named launch markets in the available reports. Without a confirmed market, powertrain, or production specification, there is no reliable basis for a price estimate or a country-by-country availability list.

Why does a Celica revival matter?
The Celica was a long-running Toyota nameplate: Toyota says seven generations were produced over nearly 40 years, with production ending in 2006. Toyota Poland’s 2026 historical feature puts total production at 4,129,626 cars and describes the model’s mix of sporting character and everyday practicality.
The name also carries a rally legacy. Toyota highlights the all-wheel-drive turbo GT-Four variants and its manufacturer titles in 1993 and 1994. That history gives the revival context, but it does not prove the new Celica will compete in rallying or share a particular competition car’s engineering. Toyota’s historical account is available in its Celica history feature.
