That is a visual comparison, not a confirmed Toyota design brief. The comparison has an unusually literal twist: Time+Tide reports that Toyota/Lexus sold a quartz chronograph matching the Lexus IS/Altezza cluster.
What makes the Altezza gauges look like a watch?
The resemblance comes from the cluster’s circular layout and the way its smaller instruments sit within the larger gauge arrangement. Time+Tide managing editor Jamie Weiss reads the design as chronograph-like, comparing it to a triple-subdial “panda dial” chronograph. “Panda” describes the familiar high-contrast look of a light dial with darker sub-dials; it is a watch-design comparison, not an official Toyota term for the dashboard.
That reading is easy to understand without treating the cluster as a literal watch face. The useful visual cues are the circles, the number and placement of smaller dials, their contrast with the main faces, and how clearly each instrument can be read. These are ways to compare the designs by eye, not the findings of a published dashboard-versus-watch test.
Was there really an Altezza- or Lexus-matching watch?
Yes, according to Weiss’s Time+Tide article: Toyota/Lexus sold a quartz chronograph matching the Lexus IS/Altezza cluster, pictured with the caption “Lexus IS300 quartz chronograph.” That makes the watch comparison more than a resemblance noticed after the fact—but it does not, by itself, establish why Toyota designed the gauges that way.

Its current availability and the authenticity of any example offered for sale are not established here. Did Toyota design the cluster to resemble a chronograph?
The evidence here does not establish that Toyota officially intended the Altezza cluster to look like a watch. Weiss attributes the design to Altezza designer Tomoyasu Nishi and says watches were on his mind, but no separate statement from Nishi or Toyota confirming that account is available in the cited material. Treat it as the article’s account, not a verified quotation or documented design brief.

There is relevant period context, but it concerns another car. In a 2002 announcement about the Voltz, Toyota described four independent, overlapping Optitron meters and said, “The meters, door trim and other fittings are coordinated around a thematic circle and arc shapes to bring out a simple beauty.” That shows Toyota discussing circular forms as part of an instrument-panel theme on the Voltz; it does not explain the Altezza gauges or prove a shared design rationale.

Time+Tide identifies the Altezza as the model sold outside Japan as the first-generation Lexus IS. That connection explains why the reported matching watch is captioned as a Lexus IS300 chronograph. It is best to describe the watch as matching the IS/Altezza cluster rather than assume that its name, market or precise specification applied identically everywhere.
