The Top 10 Engines That Have Stood the Test of Time

No cited source establishes a definitive cross-brand top 10 engines by longevity. Here’s what the Toyota-only shortlist and available 4A-GE evidence can—and cannot—show.

There is no authoritative, cross-brand ranking of the 10 engines that have lasted longest. The commonly cited MotorTrend list is a Toyota-only selection, and it is explicitly unordered. The available evidence therefore does not support presenting a definitive top 10 across manufacturers—or making a verified reliability ranking.

What it does support is a useful way to judge an engine’s staying power: consider its engineering contribution, documented breadth and duration of applications, serviceability and parts support, and cultural or competition significance. Those factors are editorial judgments, not a standardized score. Enthusiast reputation, a heritage announcement, or a performance figure alone is not proof of long-term reliability.

Why there is no definitive cross-brand top 10

“Stood the test of time” is not a standardized engine award. MotorTrend’s May 25, 2020 feature selected 10 Toyota engines and listed them “in no particular order”; it does not establish a global ranking. Ward’s annual 10 Best Engines is a different kind of recognition: its archived 2001 U.S.-market selection was made by six evaluators using factors including design, innovation, manufacturing, and an award budget cap. Neither source supplies a common measure for ranking engines across brands by longevity.

The MotorTrend shortlist is still useful as a record of one publication’s Toyota-focused choices. Its 10 entries were the 2JZ-GTE, 1JZ-GTE, 4A-GE, 3S-GTE, 4U-GSE/FA20, 1LR-GUE, 7M-GTE, 2ZZ-GE, R36V, and 3M. Inclusion on that list should not be read as a finding that these engines outlast engines from other manufacturers.

#1 Best Overall
Spurtar Oil Filter Wrench for Toyota Oil Filter Removal Tool 64mm 4 Slots
  • 64mm 14-Flute Oil Filter Fit: Designed for oil filters with a 64mm diameter and 14-flute pattern, this 3/8" drive cap wrench provides a secure fit for proper engagement. The 4 bottom slots align with compatible catridge oil filter cap tabs to help maintain grip and reduce slipping during removal
  • Vehicle Compatibility: Compatible with Toyota, Lexus, Camry, 4Runner, RAV4, Tundra, Tacoma, Highlander, Sienna, Sequoia, Avalon, and Venza vehicles equipped with 2.5L-5.7L engines. Designed for use with oil filter housings compatible with OEM reference 15620-31060. Always confirm 64mm diameter, 14-flute, and filter housing compatibility before purchase
  • Precision Machined Fit: Manufactured with precise dimensions to match 64mm 14-flute oil filter housings, providing consistent contact across the filter cap surface. The accurate fit helps distribute removal force evenly, reducing slipping and improving control during filter removal and installation
  • Lightweight 6061-T5 Aluminum Construction: Made from 6061-T5 aluminum alloy with a black anodized finish for corrosion resistance. Designed for hand-driven torque applications, the lightweight aluminum body delivers sufficient strength and secure engagement for oil filter removal while helping minimize stress on filter housings. For hand tools only — do not use with impact wrenches or power tools
  • Oil Change Maintenance Tips: For filter installation, follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommended torque specification (typically around 25 N·m ± 5 N·m). For removal, the wrench is tested to withstand approximately 100 N·m of controlled, evenly applied hand torque. When removing stuck filters, ensure full engagement and proper alignment, then apply force gradually and steadily to avoid damaging the wrench or filter housing.

How to assess whether an engine has stood the test of time

  • Engineering contribution: Look for documented technical developments and what problem they addressed, rather than treating novelty as a measure of durability.
  • Applications and history: Establish which vehicles used the engine, for how long, and in what contexts. A broad application history can show significance, but does not by itself establish failure rates.
  • Serviceability and parts support: Consider whether parts and expertise are accessible for the specific engine variant and vehicle. Support can change over time, and a heritage-parts announcement is not proof that parts are currently in stock.
  • Cultural or competition significance: Motorsport use and enthusiast following help explain an engine’s reputation and influence. They do not substitute for measured reliability evidence.
  • Evidence quality: Keep manufacturer claims, editorial selections, owner reputation, and measured reliability data distinct. The available sources do not provide dependable, named, cross-manufacturer failure-rate or longevity statistics for a definitive top ten.

What the sources establish about the 4A-GE

Toyota’s June 19, 1995 VVT-i announcement provides a dated example of the 4A-GE’s engineering history. Toyota said that in 1991 it introduced a WT mechanism on its 4A-GE sports engines to increase torque and output. The same announcement describes VVT-i as continuously changing intake-valve opening and closing timing to suit driving conditions. This is manufacturer documentation of a technical development; it is not evidence that the 4A-GE is more durable than competing engines.

On September 10, 2025, Toyota Gazoo Racing announced that it intended to reproduce and reissue 4A-GE cylinder-head and cylinder-block subassemblies for the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno AE86 under its GR Heritage Parts Project. That announcement is evidence of planned support for specified heritage components. It does not confirm current stock, pricing, retailer availability, or compatibility with every 4A-GE variant.

Efficiency figures are not longevity figures

In February 2018, Toyota reported maximum thermal efficiency of 40% for its conventional 2.0-liter Dynamic Force engine and 41% for its 2.0-liter hybrid engine. These are manufacturer-reported efficiency figures for those modern engines. They do not measure service life, failure rates, or durability, and they are not a direct comparison with the older engines on MotorTrend’s list.

How to compare engines for a real buying or restoration decision

Start with the vehicle and use case, not a universal “best engine” label. Compare engines from a consistent period and intended application, then check documentation specific to each engine and variant.

  1. Identify the exact engine and vehicle: Confirm the code, model year, market, and variant. Shared engine-family names do not establish identical specifications or parts compatibility.
  2. Define the job: A choice for a daily driver, a restoration, competition, or a project build may prioritize different traits, such as service access, original fitment, or performance.
  3. Check primary documentation: Seek manufacturer or other reliable engine-specific material for applications, technical changes, and support history. Do not infer longevity from an award or enthusiast shortlist.
  4. Verify parts and expertise for your location: Check current availability and fitment with a supplier or specialist. A manufacturer’s announcement of intended reproduction is not a parts catalogue or stock confirmation.
  5. Separate evidence from reputation: Treat owner anecdotes and cultural significance as context, not as quantified failure-rate data. Compare measured reliability only when the source, population, conditions, and date are clear.
