No—the timing chain reportedly did not fail. In a teardown of a commercial 2022 Ford F-150 Lariat with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and 180,000 miles, the chain system was described as functionally intact. The reported catastrophic damage was elsewhere: a piston had melted through its rings, with metal debris and severe internal scoring. The specific trigger was not established, so this is a postmortem of one engine, not a verdict on every F-150 EcoBoost.
What happened to this 180,000-mile F-150 EcoBoost?
Autoblog’s September 29, 2026 account describes a third-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 from a 2022 F-150 Lariat used in commercial fleet service. It reportedly accumulated 180,000 miles over four years. The engine turned over relatively easily during the reported teardown, and its timing-chain system remained functionally intact, though the plastic guides showed brittleness. Autoblog’s teardown report
The chain’s condition is the unexpected part of the story. It was not identified as the cause of the engine’s failure. The more serious reported findings were a melted piston and damage elsewhere inside the engine.
What damage was reported inside the engine?
- One piston had reportedly melted through its rings.
- Aluminum debris had settled in the oil pan.
- Rod bearings were scored, and camshaft journals showed deep scoring.
- The variable camshaft timing solenoids were reportedly left improperly secured by a prior mechanic.
These are observations attributed to the published teardown account, not findings from an independent inspection. The original video, full service records, diagnostic tests, and any Ford assessment were not independently established in the available reporting.

Did the timing chain fail?
According to the teardown report, no: the timing-chain system was still functionally intact. Its plastic guides were described as brittle, but that is not the same as a reported chain failure or proof that the chain caused the engine damage. The evidence does not support treating a timing-chain replacement as the fix for this particular engine.
What may have melted the piston?
The teardown account attributed the piston damage to severe detonation. Detonation is abnormal combustion in which the fuel-air mixture explodes rather than burning smoothly; extreme heat and mechanical stress can damage or melt a piston. The FAA Safety Team’s April 2019 presentation discusses this general mechanism for aircraft piston engines, not as a Ford-specific diagnosis. FAA Safety Team, “Pre-ignition and Detonation”

That account named three possible triggers in this truck, but did not determine which—if any—was responsible:
- A faulty fuel injector.
- An aggressive aftermarket engine tune.
- Heavy oil consumption.
Autoblog also reported substantial mileage gaps between routine oil changes and described scoring associated with dirty oil. Those gaps may matter when assessing wear, but the reported history does not prove that delayed or skipped oil changes alone caused the melted piston. Nor does it establish the tune, injector, oil consumption, or timing chain as the definitive cause.

What this teardown does—and does not—show
It shows that one heavily used 2022 F-150 EcoBoost reportedly reached a serious internal failure while its timing-chain system remained functional. It does not show how often this failure happens across F-150s or 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines, or establish that commercial use, a particular maintenance pattern, or a specific modification caused this outcome. The report is a single-engine case, not population-level reliability data. Morning Overview’s September 30, 2026 summary
Ford reported that 828,832 F-Series trucks were sold in 2025 and that F-Series was America’s best-selling truck for a 49th consecutive year. That figure gives a sense of the nameplate’s scale; sales totals say nothing about the rate of this or any other engine failure. Ford’s June 1, 2026 sales release

What should an owner do if an engine shows similar damage?
Do not assume the timing chain is at fault just because it appears in the headline. For another truck with internal damage, base the next step on diagnosis and documented condition rather than this one teardown.
Quick Recap
- Get the symptoms and diagnostic findings documented. Ask the shop to record fault codes, test results, and the components it has actually inspected.
- Request a written damage assessment. It should distinguish confirmed failures from suspected causes, including any evidence of detonation, fuel-system problems, oil consumption, or lubrication-related wear.
- Check coverage before authorizing major work. Ask the dealer or warranty provider to review the truck’s eligibility and service history; do not infer coverage from this case.
- Compare repair scope and written estimates. If rebuild or engine replacement is proposed, compare what each estimate includes and ask how the suspected initiating cause will be addressed.
