The documented partnership covered styling and selected exterior components—not the engineering or construction of the whole car.
What was the Subaru–Porsche wagon?
The TYPE EURO was based on Subaru’s Impreza Sports Wagon. Subaru first showed it as a reference vehicle at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001, then announced sales through Japanese Subaru dealers beginning February 20, 2002. The October 2001 show description presented a metallic-silver car with a design concept intended to evoke a vehicle carved from a massive block of aluminum. Subaru’s Tokyo Motor Show description establishes that earlier appearance; the subsequent January 21, 2002 launch announcement identifies the sales plan and collaboration.
What did Porsche Design contribute?
Fuji Heavy Industries described the TYPE EURO as jointly styled by Austria-based Porsche Design and FHI, with new exterior components jointly developed by the two companies. The announcement specifically identifies the grille-integrated front bumper, rear bumper, roof spoiler, and—on the TYPE EURO TURBO only—17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels as jointly developed.
Other equipment listed for the edition included a special rear emblem and black sporty seats, but Subaru did not identify those items as joint Porsche Design–FHI developments. The announcement documents a design collaboration; it does not say Porsche engineered the car or its drivetrain.

Three TYPE EURO configurations
Subaru announced three versions, differentiated by engine and, in the turbo model’s case, its wheel equipment:
| Version | Engine | 17-inch alloy wheels | Original suggested retail price, excluding Japanese consumption tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| TYPE EURO 15 | 1.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder SOHC | Not specified as fitted | ¥2,028,000 |
| TYPE EURO 20 | 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder DOHC | Not specified as fitted | ¥2,233,000–¥2,356,000 |
| TYPE EURO TURBO | Turbocharged 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder DOHC | Yes; the announcement specifies these for the turbo only | ¥2,663,000–¥2,816,000 |
Prices are the launch figures Subaru published in 2002, converted from the announcement’s thousands-of-yen format; they are not current used-car values. The announcement also lists HID low-beam headlights, four-sensor, four-channel ABS, dark rear glass, and an aluminum front hood as TYPE EURO equipment.

- Highly accurate static display model.
How rare was it?
Subaru set a monthly sales target of 100 when it announced the model. That figure is a target, not a verified monthly sales result or production total. The cited manufacturer material does not establish how many TYPE EURO wagons were ultimately built or sold, so a precise build count cannot be responsibly stated.
The strongest supported description is a Japan-market special edition whose Porsche Design connection lay in joint styling and specified exterior parts. Subaru’s 2002 news-release archive also lists the January TYPE EURO announcement.
