The Subaru Forester Won’t Blow You Away, but It’s Still Excellent

The 2026 Subaru Forester is a comfortable, roomy and practical compact SUV with strong visibility, but Consumer Reports found modest acceleration. Here’s what to know about its test results, trims, safety-rating scope and hybrid alternative.

The 2026 Subaru Forester is a strong compact SUV for drivers who value comfort, visibility, space and all-weather traction more than quick acceleration or a sporty drive. Consumer Reports gave the gas model a 94/100 road-test score and ranked it third among 28 compact SUVs it tested, while also finding that it feels underpowered when pushed. Its appeal is practical rather than thrilling.

What makes the Forester excellent—and what holds it back?

Consumer Reports’ February 2026 report describes a 2026 gas Forester with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 180 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT simulates conventional automatic shifts and, according to the review, avoids letting engine revs soar as much as some CVTs do. The engine has reasonable pep at low speeds, but the vehicle feels short on power when stronger acceleration is needed.

In Consumer Reports’ test, the Forester went from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds. That is useful context for passing or merging expectations, not a guarantee of how every Forester will perform in every condition. If brisk acceleration or an engaging drive is high on your list, this is the vehicle’s clearest compromise.

The strengths are the things that matter over routine miles. Consumer Reports praises the comfortable ride, quietness relative to the previous model, broad outward visibility, roomy rear seat and braking. It also notes basic rather than luxurious cabin materials and says some controls are tucked into touchscreen menus. Its summary is that the Forester remains “a sturdy, functional, and practical small SUV.”

How efficient is the 2026 gas Forester?

Consumer Reports measured 29 mpg overall in its 2026 gas Forester test: 20 mpg in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway. These are that publisher’s test results, not EPA estimates or a promise of what an owner will achieve. Driving style, route, weather and vehicle configuration can affect real-world fuel economy.

Is the Subaru Forester reliable?

Consumer Reports listed predicted reliability at 60/100 and predicted owner satisfaction at 77/100 in its February 2026 report. Those are the publication’s scores, not guarantees for a particular vehicle or a complete long-term reliability outlook. They should be read separately from the Forester’s 94/100 road-test score, which reflects the publication’s assessment of the tested vehicle rather than a prediction of future dependability.

Which Forester trim should you consider?

Consumer Reports recommends looking beyond Base if you want more comfort equipment and driver alerts. In its 2026 report, it says the Base lacks blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning; both are optional on Premium and standard on higher trims. The report recommends the Premium package that adds those alerts and a power liftgate.

Premium also adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats and mirrors, reclining rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charger and a larger infotainment display, according to Consumer Reports. These are the report’s trim details and recommendation; check the equipment list for the exact model year, trim and vehicle you are considering because specifications and package availability can change.

How much space and capability does it offer?

Subaru’s official feature page for the 2025 gas Forester lists standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Subaru gives maximum cargo volume as 74.4 cubic feet and passenger volume as 110.8 cubic feet. Those are manufacturer figures for the 2025 model, not independently measured comparisons with rival SUVs.

On that same 2025 feature page, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are listed as standard on Premium, Sport, Limited and Touring. Check current-year specifications and the individual vehicle’s equipment before buying; the figures and trim details here do not establish that every model year or trim is identical.

Is the Forester good in snow?

Standard all-wheel drive on the 2025 gas model is a useful feature for drivers who encounter slippery roads, but the cited specifications do not prove how the Forester will perform in every winter condition. Tires, road surface, speed and driver inputs all matter. All-wheel drive can help deliver power to the wheels, but it does not remove the need for appropriate tires or careful driving.

What do the Forester’s safety ratings cover?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) publishes ratings by specific test, model year and vehicle applicability—not as one blanket statement that every Forester is equally rated. Its 2026 Forester page says a 2025 vehicle was used for some evaluations whose ratings apply to 2025–2026 models, but those ratings do not apply to 2025 Wilderness models. IIHS also notes rear-seat-belt changes on 2026 models for the updated moderate-overlap front test. Review the individual IIHS test results and their applicability for the exact year and trim you are shopping.

Should you choose the 2026 Forester Hybrid?

The hybrid is a distinct alternative if fuel economy matters more than quicker acceleration. Consumer Reports measured 34 mpg overall in its 2026 Forester Hybrid test—26 mpg city and 42 mpg highway—and recorded a 0-to-60-mph time of 9.3 seconds. These are Consumer Reports test figures, not EPA ratings. The publication says the hybrid retains the Forester’s visibility, roomy cabin and comfortable ride, but its full-time mechanical all-wheel-drive approach trails key hybrid rivals on fuel economy.

Consumer Reports estimates the hybrid costs about $1,700–$3,000 more than the regular version, depending on trim, and notes that it has a tire repair kit instead of a temporary spare. That creates a straightforward trade-off: the hybrid returned better fuel economy in the publisher’s test, but it was slower in that test, carried an estimated price premium and changed the spare-tire arrangement.

How to decide whether the Forester fits you

  • Choose it for everyday usability: Its tested comfort, visibility, rear-seat room and practical layout are the strongest reasons to consider it.
  • Test the acceleration yourself: If passing response matters, drive the gas model on the kind of roads you use and decide whether its performance feels adequate.
  • Compare actual equipment: Check blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning and comfort features on the exact trim and package, rather than assuming they are standard.
  • Weigh the hybrid on your own priorities: Compare its test-reported fuel economy with its estimated premium, slower test acceleration and repair-kit setup.
  • Compare rivals on the same measures: Use consistent road-test fuel economy and acceleration data, ride and noise assessments, space, standard safety equipment and rating applicability. The cited sources do not provide comparable tests of named rivals, so they cannot establish a head-to-head winner.
