Its standout feature was the Switchback system, which let long cargo pass from the bed through the folded rear seat. The exact horsepower depends on model year: Subaru’s 2004-model-year brochure lists 210 hp, while its 2006 brochure lists 230 hp.
What made the Baja Turbo different?
The Baja was neither a conventional pickup nor simply a wagon with an exposed cargo area. It combined a passenger-car cabin with four seats, an open bed and Subaru’s all-wheel-drive platform. The Turbo added an intercooled, turbocharged horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. Subaru Canada described the bed as a kind of utility passenger cars and SUVs did not provide, while the short bed and rear-seat pass-through made the vehicle’s cargo arrangement distinctive.
That mix is what makes “in a league of its own” useful as a description, not a literal claim that no other vehicle offered a similar idea.
How much horsepower does the Subaru Baja Turbo have?
The answer depends on the model year and the brochure being used. Subaru’s 2004-model-year specifications brochure, published in 2003, lists the 2.5-liter Turbo at 210 hp at 5,600 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. Subaru’s 2006 full-line brochure, published in 2005, lists a 230-hp Turbo specification. These are year-specific manufacturer figures; they should not be combined into one universal Baja Turbo rating.

The cited brochures document a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. The 2006 material describes SPORTSHIFT control for the automatic. Subaru’s 2006 brochure also describes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and raised suspension. Check the model year and vehicle configuration when comparing a specific Baja.
How long is the Subaru Baja bed?
Subaru’s 2004 specifications give the bed dimensions as 41.5 inches long, 49.0 inches wide and 17.0 inches high, with 39.2 inches between the wheelhouses. Those are manufacturer dimensions, not a payload rating or confirmation that a particular item can be carried safely.

Subaru Canada’s 2004 release describes three load lengths as the cargo area is reconfigured:

How does the Switchback system work?
The Switchback system connected the bed to the cabin for long cargo. Subaru Canada’s description says the rear-seat cushion folded upward, the seatback folded flat, and a pass-through opened. With the pass-through and the bed extender in use, Subaru reported a total load length of 77.7 inches.

The 2004 specifications also list a drop-down tailgate, tie-down hooks, an integrated bed liner and a bed light. The bed’s dimensions and the pass-through describe cargo space; they do not establish safe load weight or whether an item is appropriate to transport in a given configuration.
What fuel economy did Subaru estimate?
For the 2004 model year, Subaru of America listed EPA estimates of 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway with the manual, and 18 mpg city and 23 mpg highway with the automatic. These are period EPA estimates published in Subaru’s 2003 brochure, not a prediction of present-day fuel economy for an individual used vehicle.

Where can you find the right Subaru Baja owner’s manual?
Use a manual that matches both the vehicle’s model year and market. Subaru Canada’s release describes the Baja’s cargo system, while a ManualsLib listing provides a 2006 owner’s manual; that manual is not automatically the correct reference for every Baja. Confirm the year before relying on instructions for operating the bed equipment.
The archived manual guidance says that if driving with the tailgate open is necessary, the optional Subaru bed extender and license-plate bracket should be set in their specified open positions. Follow the instructions for the exact vehicle rather than applying that model-specific guidance to another vehicle.

What should you check before buying a used Baja Turbo?
Confirm the model year and transmission before comparing engine specifications, then check the VIN for any open recalls through an official recall lookup. A recall campaign document covers Baja Turbo and non-Turbo vehicles, but it does not establish whether a particular vehicle has an unresolved recall.
For cargo use, inspect the bed, tailgate, extender and pass-through equipment, and consult the matching owner’s manual for operation. The published dimensions alone do not tell you the vehicle’s current condition, safe payload or whether all original cargo components are present.
