The P1 is the clearest starting point, while the track-focused Senna and newer W1 show how McLaren has applied the broader idea in different ways. That is an editorial description, not proof that McLaren was first or universally ahead of every rival.
What active aerodynamics does on the McLaren P1
Active aerodynamics lets parts of a car’s exterior change position or configuration to manage airflow for different driving conditions. On the P1, McLaren says the movable front and rear wings help “maximise downforce and reduce drag.” The company publishes a peak downforce figure of 600 kg (1,323 lb). This is McLaren’s specification; the figure is not presented as an independently verified comparison with other cars. McLaren P1
McLaren presents the wings as part of a larger airflow package rather than an isolated add-on. The P1’s compact, “shrink-wrapped” body is designed to direct air across the exterior and toward a roof snorkel intake and the active aerodynamic components. Its central cockpit and tightly packaged bodywork are part of that overall design story.
How the Senna shifts the emphasis toward the track
McLaren describes the Senna as a road-legal, track-focused car. Its active-aero setup includes front aero blades and a rear wing; the company says the components were developed to generate “extreme levels of downforce.” The Senna’s approach makes the track-performance emphasis explicit. - Exquisite paint, heavy body, translucent packaging. Suitable for collection, car decoration, cake topper, toy, etc.
- Press the bottom button to open the front cover. Opening butterfly doors, trunks or pressing the front wheel produces sounds and lights.
- Pull back function. 4 kinds of realistic sound. No switch to turn off the sound, maybe a little noisy.
- 1:32 scale die-cast car model, size 6.3*3.23*1.77 inches, weight 0.55 pound.
- Zinc alloy body, plastic parts and rubber tires. Detailed interior and exterior.
McLaren publishes the Senna’s power-to-weight ratio as 668 PS (659 bhp) per tonne. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independently verified comparative result—and it measures something different from the P1’s peak-downforce figure.
What the W1 adds: an active longtail and mode-based aero
The W1 combines an active longtail with front active aero and underbody ground-effect integration. McLaren says the longtail extends by 300 mm in Race mode and that the car produces five times more downforce in Race mode than in road mode. That fivefold comparison is between the W1’s own modes; it is not a direct comparison with the P1 or Senna. McLaren W1 aerodynamics

The W1’s example shows how active aero can involve more than repositioning a wing: McLaren’s description also notes that the car drops down in Race mode. The stated outcome is a mode-dependent aerodynamic change, with the manufacturer’s published figures providing the scope of the claim.
How the three McLarens compare
| Car | Intended emphasis | Active-aero approach described by McLaren | Published figure cited here |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1 | Road-and-track flagship | Movable front and rear wings, integrated with the car’s airflow-focused body packaging | 600 kg (1,323 lb) peak downforce |
| Senna | Road-legal and track-focused | Front aero blades and a rear wing | 668 PS (659 bhp) per tonne power-to-weight ratio |
| W1 | Newer flagship; the cited aero comparison is between its road and Race modes | Active longtail, front active aero and underbody ground-effect integration | 300 mm longtail extension in Race mode; five times more downforce in Race mode than road mode |
These figures do not form a performance ranking: they describe different measurements and, for the W1, a comparison between driving modes. McLaren’s published material supports a story about evolving design priorities, not a common independent test or an industry-wide verdict.
