Built for Gibbons by Buffalo Motor Cars in the early 1980s, it became a band icon through the cover of the 1983 album Eliminator and the videos for “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs.”
What is the ZZ Top car?
The Eliminator is a chopped, customized 1933 Ford coupe associated with ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. Rhino’s retrospective describes it as a red coupe with a Corvette engine; the Museum of the Gulf Coast also identifies it as a 1933 Ford coupe. The specific engine detail is Rhino’s, rather than a universally documented build specification.

Gibbons said he wanted a hot rod for the road and credited the movie car from The California Kid as an influence on the Eliminator’s look. In a 2017 interview republished on his official site, he said Buffalo Motor Cars in Paramount, California, built the chopped coupe for him in the early 1980s. The available account does not establish a complete parts list, chassis specification or exact completion date.
How the Eliminator became ZZ Top’s signature
The car’s public identity took shape with Eliminator, released March 23, 1983. The red coupe was central to the album-cover imagery and the music videos associated with its singles. ZZ Top’s official biography names “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” among the album’s prominent video releases.

The videos made the car part of the band’s visual identity during MTV’s rise. That image arrived alongside a change in the music: the album brought ZZ Top’s blues-based guitar sound together with synthesizers and dance-oriented rhythms. The official biography describes Eliminator as a major shift in the group’s approach.
Billy Gibbons’s official site reported in 2018 that the album had sold more than 10 million copies. That is the figure in that 2018 account, not a newly verified current sales total.
Who built the ZZ Top Eliminator?
According to Gibbons’s 2017 interview, Buffalo Motor Cars built the chopped coupe for him in the early 1980s. Gibbons described the car as a practical expression of the band’s interest in hot rods and custom cars, saying they thought it would be great to have one “for the road.” The account credits the shop but does not detail each component or identify a more precise build date.

In the 2017 interview, Gibbons said the car remained fully operational and that he still owned and drove it at that time. That statement confirms its status then, but does not establish who owns it or where it is today.
A 2016 Louder article reported that the Eliminator was on permanent exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. That historical report does not verify that the car is currently on display or accessible to visitors. Check the Hall of Fame’s current collection information or contact the museum before planning a visit.
