Mahindra began as a steel-trading business in 1945. It entered vehicle manufacturing through Jeep assembly, built a parallel foundation in tractors, and expanded internationally through exports, partnerships, acquisitions, local assembly and investment in engineering and design. The result is a diversified automotive and farm-equipment business—not a company defined by a single SUV or overseas deal.
When was Mahindra founded?
J.C. and K.C. Mahindra and Ghulam Mohammed established Mahindra & Mohammed on 2 October 1945, initially trading steel, according to Mahindra’s official history. The company later became Mahindra & Mahindra, the flagship company of the Mahindra Group.
How did Mahindra start making vehicles?
Mahindra moved from trading into vehicle assembly after the Second World War. The company’s records describe two early milestones that should be kept distinct: its FY2024-25 annual report says it assembled its first vehicle in 1947, while its official timeline says 75 Jeeps arrived from Willys Overland Export Corporation in completely knocked-down condition and were assembled at Mazagon, Bombay, in 1949. The company materials do not explain the difference between these dates.
The Jeep connection gave Mahindra an entry into vehicle manufacturing, but its later automotive story was not only about SUVs. Tractors became a second major industrial base.

How did tractors become a second foundation?
Mahindra’s tractor business developed through international collaboration and then became part of the company’s own operations:
- 1961: Mahindra joined with U.S. company International Harvester to manufacture tractors.
- 1963: International Tractor Company of India (ITCI) was formed as a joint venture involving International Harvester and Voltas. Mahindra’s timeline records a licence to manufacture 3,500 tractors.
- 1977: ITCI merged into Mahindra and became its tractor division.
- 1983: Mahindra says it became India’s largest-selling tractor brand and held that position for four decades.
In its FY2024-25 Integrated Annual Report, Mahindra describes the group as the world’s largest tractor company by volume. That is a company-published leadership claim; the report’s wording and volume qualifier matter, and the ranking is not independently verified here. The history and figures are set out in Mahindra’s company history and its annual reports.

How did Mahindra build its modern automotive business?
From the 2000s onward, Mahindra’s development involved product launches, acquisitions and engineering investment. These are distinct parts of the story rather than a single cause of international growth.
- 2008: Mahindra opened an automotive facility at Chakan, Pune.
- 2010: It acquired Reva Electric Vehicles, extending its activity into electric vehicles.
- 2011: Mahindra launched the XUV500, which its timeline calls its first global SUV model, and bought South Korean SUV maker SsangYong Motor.
- Engineering: Mahindra opened Mahindra Research Valley, described by the company as an automotive and tractor innovation hub.
- 2014: Mahindra Racing entered Formula E as a founding team.
Mahindra’s official timeline records these milestones. They illustrate investment in products and capabilities alongside acquisitions; they do not, by themselves, establish why later growth occurred.
How did Mahindra become a global company?
Mahindra’s international reach grew through several routes, and “global” does not mean the same thing in each case. Its international vehicle information documents exports to Australia, local assembly in Sri Lanka and South Africa, and launches in South Africa, Nepal, New Zealand, Australia, Mozambique and Chile.
| Route | What it means in Mahindra’s story | Examples recorded by the company |
|---|---|---|
| Export | Finished vehicles cross a border to reach another market. | Exports to Australia. |
| Local assembly | Vehicles are assembled in the destination market rather than simply shipped there fully built. | Assembly in Sri Lanka and South Africa. |
| Partnership | Collaboration provides a route into manufacturing or capability-building. | International Harvester’s role in tractor manufacturing and ITCI. |
| Acquisition | Buying a company adds a business, technology or market position. | Reva Electric Vehicles in 2010 and SsangYong Motor in 2011. |
| Engineering and design investment | Research and design capacity supports product and business development across markets. | Mahindra Research Valley and the R&D and design network reported in FY2024-25. |
Mahindra’s FY2024-25 Integrated Annual Report says the group had business presence in 100+ countries and R&D and design facilities at 21 centres across seven countries. The 100+ figure describes the group’s business presence; it does not establish that Mahindra vehicles are sold in every one of those countries. The centre count is likewise a group-reported footprint, not a count of vehicle sales markets. See the FY2024-25 Integrated Annual Report.

What is Mahindra known for today?
Mahindra & Mahindra’s reported range spans SUVs, pickups, commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, tractors, two-wheelers, gensets and construction equipment. That breadth reflects the company’s dual automotive and farm-equipment foundations as well as its expansion into adjacent businesses.
In its FY2024-25 report, Mahindra describes itself as India’s No. 1 SUV company by revenue market share and the No. 1 light commercial vehicle company below 3.5 tonnes. These are the company’s own rankings for that reporting period; the report’s category definitions and the basis for each ranking should be consulted before comparing them with other measures. The same report’s description of the world’s largest tractor company is also a company claim, specifically qualified by volume. These positions are not independent assessments.

Which Mahindra vehicle first went global?
Mahindra calls the XUV500, launched in 2011, its first global SUV model. That phrasing identifies the company’s milestone; it does not mean the XUV500 was its first vehicle ever exported. The distinction fits Mahindra’s broader history: vehicle exports and overseas operations predate a model expressly designated as a global SUV. The milestone appears in Mahindra’s official timeline.
How to read Mahindra’s global story
Mahindra’s trajectory is best understood as overlapping business lines and routes into international markets. Jeep assembly established a vehicle-manufacturing foothold; tractors built a substantial parallel business; later exports, local assembly, partnerships, acquisitions and engineering investment widened the company’s capabilities and reach. The company’s reported presence across countries belongs to the group as a whole, while specific vehicle-market examples describe a narrower automotive footprint.
