The Story Behind the Ultra-Rare 1966 HEMI-Powered Dodge Coronet Deluxe Four-Door

A Hemi-powered 1966 Coronet Deluxe four-door is an unlikely Mopar classic. Its production count remains disputed—and Don Garlits’s famous sedan was a tribute, not a factory Hemi car.

A 1966 Dodge Coronet Deluxe four-door with a 426 Hemi is a striking mismatch: an unassuming family-car body paired with one of Chrysler’s most famous performance engines. But its exact production count is unsettled, and some stories attached to rare Hemi Coronets belong to different cars. The evidence points to a fascinating rarity—with important distinctions between factory-built examples, broader four-door claims and later tribute cars.

What makes the Hemi Coronet Deluxe four-door unusual?

The Coronet Deluxe was an ordinary-looking four-door sedan, not the shape most people picture when they think of a muscle car. The 426 Hemi made that contrast remarkable. Chrysler offered its 426 Street Hemi for 1966 in Dodge Coronet and Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite B-body intermediates. Hot Rod describes the Street Hemi as a detuned version of the Race Hemi, with 10.25:1 compression, two Carter four-barrel carburetors on an inline dual-quad intake, a hydraulic cam and exhaust manifolds rather than headers. Hot Rod’s account of the 1966 Coronet Deluxe provides that technical context.

Those specifications describe the Street Hemi, not proof that a particular surviving car retains its original engine or configuration. That distinction matters especially with the Don Garlits car, which is a later conversion rather than a factory Hemi sedan.

How many 1966 Hemi Coronet Deluxe four-doors were built?

The available counts conflict, and they do not clearly describe the same population. ProductionCars.com’s compiled Coronet table lists two 1966 Deluxe four-doors with Hemi engines and says both were automatics. The accessible PDF does not state its publication year. The compiled production table is specific about model year, trim and body style, but it does not settle the wider disagreement.

Barrett-Jackson’s 2007 catalog describes five Hemi four-door cars in a broader account: three ordered by American customers, one export car and one Canadian car. Its wording does not establish that all five were 1966 Coronet Deluxe sedans. The auction catalog entry identifies the red car it offered as a 1966 Dodge Hemi Coronet Deluxe four-door.

Street Muscle later repeated a “five believed” figure for the broader Coronet Hemi run, but that secondary account does not resolve the difference in scope. Street Muscle’s report also gives the auction result discussed below. The careful conclusion is that one compiled table lists two 1966 Deluxe four-door Hemi cars, while Barrett-Jackson describes five four-door cars across a broader scope; neither source reconciles the counts.

What happened to the Barrett-Jackson car?

Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale catalog describes a red 1966 Hemi Coronet Deluxe four-door and says the example retained substantial documentation: a build sheet, Certicard, window sticker, original engine and transmission, title and DMV receipts. The listing also identifies a Govier registry inspection. These are claims about that particular car, not a general guarantee about every Hemi-badged Coronet.

Street Muscle reported that the car sold for $660,000 at Barrett-Jackson’s 2007 Scottsdale auction. That figure is reported by the later secondary coverage, so it should be treated as its account of the sale rather than as a production or market value applying to other cars.

Why Don Garlits built his own four-door Hemi

A different, memorable chapter involves drag-racing legend Don Garlits. Mecum’s 2023 catalog says Garlits began with a non-Hemi Coronet Deluxe sedan, then built and installed a 426 Hemi himself. The car had a broadcast sheet and Certicard, an A727 TorqueFlite automatic and an 8¾ Sure-Grip rear axle with 3.23 gears; Mecum says a tag verifies Garlits’s construction. Mecum’s listing reported a $48,400 sale.

That is a tribute car with a notable builder and documented history, not a factory-built Hemi four-door. The distinction is a useful reminder that a Hemi under the hood—and even paperwork for the car—does not by itself establish that the body left the factory with that engine.

Which Coronet has the street-racing story?

The often-repeated tale of a Coronet Hemi bought in Chicago and used to humble a local Camaro belongs to a separate two-door car. Hot Rod says that 1966 Coronet Deluxe Hemi was sold new at Mr. Norm’s Grand Spaulding Dodge, traded back in 1968, and later bought by Lou Costello of Mankato, Minnesota. Costello reportedly flew to Chicago, drove the car home and used it in an acceleration contest against a local Camaro. It is an entertaining story, but it should not be transferred to the four-door.

Hot Rod also reports 49 Hemi Coronet Deluxe two-door sedans for 1966—31 four-speeds and 18 automatics—and 34 base Coronet two-door sedans—11 four-speeds and 23 automatics. Those figures concern two-door cars, not the four-door production count.

How to tell a factory Hemi car from a conversion

For a rare classic, establish provenance car by car rather than relying on trim badges or a current engine installation. The Barrett-Jackson example’s catalog lists several pieces of supporting paperwork and an original engine and transmission; Mecum’s Garlits listing, by contrast, explicitly describes a Hemi installed after the car began as a non-Hemi sedan. A buyer or historian should look for documentation that supports the specific car’s factory configuration and verify claims against the relevant records and specialists.

  • Identify the exact model year, trim and body style before applying a production figure.
  • Distinguish factory-installed equipment from a later engine swap or tribute build.
  • Assess paperwork and inspection claims as evidence tied to that individual car.
  • Do not use the two-door street-racing account or its production totals as evidence about four-door sedans.
