Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Driver monitoring systems (DMS) use sensors and software to estimate a driver’s attention or condition, then alert or prompt them when the system detects a possible risk. They are appearing in factory-built vehicles and commercial fleet equipment, but they are not a single standardized feature: systems differ in what they detect, how they respond, and what happens to the data. A DMS does not make a driver-assistance system self-driving or transfer responsibility away from the driver.
What is a driver monitoring system?
A DMS assesses something about the person behind the wheel, such as whether they appear to be looking at the road or showing signs of drowsiness. It may use an in-cabin camera, eye-tracking software, head-position analysis, steering-wheel sensors, vehicle-control behavior, or a combination of inputs. Its estimate is not a diagnosis or a guarantee that the driver is safe.
DMS is related to, but distinct from, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). ADAS features can help steer, brake, or control speed; DMS observes the driver and may issue a warning or prompt. Some vehicles combine the technologies, but a monitoring feature does not make an assistance system autonomous. NHTSA says Level 2 systems can provide both steering and acceleration or braking, while the driver must remain attentive and responsible for driving. Its automated-vehicle safety guidance puts it plainly: “Every vehicle currently for sale in the United States requires the full attention of the driver at all times for safe operation.”
How does a driver monitoring system work?
Sensors estimate a particular driver state
A camera-based system may analyze eye gaze, eye closure, or head pose to estimate visual distraction or drowsiness. Other systems use steering-wheel contact or vehicle-control signals, and some combine sensor types. These approaches do not necessarily detect the same conditions: visual distraction, drowsiness, unresponsiveness, impairment, and driver availability are different targets, and a product may assess only some of them.

The system responds to its estimate
Depending on the vehicle or product, a response can be a visual or audio warning, a haptic alert such as seat vibration, an escalation sequence, a fleet-manager notification, or some other intervention. A device that warns the driver is not automatically capable of changing vehicle behavior or arranging human help.
Performance depends on conditions and validation
Lighting, eyewear, head coverings, driver position, and vehicle vibration can affect sensing. Do not assume every DMS works equally well in every cabin or condition; look for product-specific validation and information about what happens when the system cannot make a confident estimate. In its 2022 NCAP roadmap discussion, NHTSA raised questions about sensor types, target states, confidence, reliability, and the effectiveness of interventions. A demonstration or supplier claim alone does not establish a reduction in crashes.

Are driver monitoring systems mandatory?
There is no single worldwide answer. The EU has requirements for specified driver-warning functions, Euro NCAP assesses safe-driving capabilities, and U.S. agency activity described in the available sources is research and assessment—not a general U.S. DMS mandate. These are different kinds of requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Jurisdiction or programme | What it covers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| European Union regulations | Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 sets requirements for driver drowsiness and attention warning (DDAW) and advanced driver distraction warning (ADDW) systems. Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1707 supplies application methods, requirements, and tests for driver-warning systems under Euro 7 for M1 and N1 vehicles. | These rules do not mean every car in every market must have the same camera or feature set. Check the applicable legal text and dates for a specific vehicle and market. |
| Euro NCAP | The consumer assessment programme’s Safe Driving page lists Occupant Monitoring v1.2, Driver Engagement v1.2, and Vehicle Assistance v1.2, as well as driver-monitoring guidance and a test procedure. | Assessment protocols and rating incentives are not legislation. |
| United States | NHTSA’s 2022 roadmap discussed whether DMS might be included in its New Car Assessment Program. A 2026 U.S. DOT/NHTSA notice describes a proposed one-time voluntary experiment involving drivers using Level 2 systems equipped with DMS, for which the agency intended to seek OMB approval. | The roadmap consultation and proposed experiment are not a general requirement to install DMS in U.S. vehicles. |
The primary EU texts are Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, consolidated to 7 July 2024, and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1707. The U.S. notice is available at the Department of Transportation.

Do driver monitoring systems record or store video?
There is no universal answer: data handling depends on the system, its configuration, and the applicable rules. A camera may analyze images in the vehicle without routinely saving or transmitting video, while a fleet product may offer recording or connected services. Ask where images are processed, whether they are transmitted, who can view them, how long they are retained, and how they are deleted. A vendor’s description of one configuration does not prove that every installation handles data the same way.
For DDAW and ADDW systems covered by Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, the law requires a closed-loop approach: systems must not continuously record or retain data beyond what is necessary, make those data accessible to third parties, or keep them after processing; data are to be deleted immediately after processing. The regulation also calls for performance targets intended to avoid or minimize errors in real driving conditions. Those provisions are specific to the systems and legal scope covered by the regulation, rather than a blanket description of every DMS product worldwide.

How do factory DMS and aftermarket fleet systems differ?
Factory-embedded systems are integrated into a vehicle’s electronics and may work alongside its driver-assistance features. Aftermarket fleet equipment is installed for commercial operations and can combine in-cab sensing, alerts, and fleet services. It is not necessarily a consumer dash camera or a universal plug-in accessory.
| Consideration | Factory-embedded passenger-car DMS | Aftermarket commercial-fleet DMS |
|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Integrated by an automaker or supplier as part of a production vehicle. | Installed in a fleet vehicle; installation and vehicle suitability depend on the product. |
| Possible functions | Driver-state sensing and alerts, potentially integrated with vehicle assistance features. | In-cab monitoring and alerts, with connected fleet services depending on the system. |
| Examples in supplier descriptions | Seeing Machines’ FOVIO technology and Smart Eye’s automotive solutions are described for OEM or automotive-supplier integration. | Seeing Machines Guardian is described with driver eye and head tracking, a forward-facing camera, alerts including seat vibration, and fleet services. Smart Eye’s fleet and aftermarket offering includes AIS/AIS+; its 6 January 2025 AIS+ announcement specifies real-time haptic alerts and optional video recording. |
| What to check | Which driver states are monitored, what triggers a warning, and how the feature interacts with driver assistance. | Vehicle compatibility, installation, connectivity, alert workflow, recording options, and who can access fleet data. |
Can I add a driver monitoring system to an older car?
Aftermarket commercial-fleet products exist, but their existence does not establish that a particular system is suitable for a privately owned passenger car. Before considering one, confirm with the supplier or installer that it supports the vehicle and use case, determine whether installation or connectivity is required, and understand what data it captures and who receives it. Do not assume a fleet-focused product will integrate with the car’s safety systems or behave like a factory feature.

What do the available product and effectiveness claims show?
Supplier pages establish that products are offered and describe their features; they do not by themselves establish market-wide adoption or independent effectiveness. Seeing Machines’ Guardian page reports use by more than 1,200 commercial transport and logistics organisations globally and claims a reduction of more than 94% in fatigue-related events. Its technology page separately claims a reduction of more than 90% in fatigue-related driving events. These are the vendor’s differently worded claims, not independent estimates of crash reduction, and the cited pages do not provide enough study-design detail to generalize either figure across systems or populations.
No authoritative independent statistic establishing the installed share of DMS across the global vehicle fleet, or a comparable independent effectiveness estimate across vendors, is established by the cited sources. A customer count or promotional outcome figure should not be substituted for either.
