How Much Power Do NASCAR Cup Series Engines Have in 2026?

NASCAR Cup horsepower depends on the track package: the 2026 target is 750 hp on selected road courses and short ovals, versus a 670-hp baseline in the other applicable configuration.

For the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series, the target is 750 horsepower on road courses and ovals shorter than 1.5 miles; the baseline in the other applicable configuration is 670 hp. The figure depends on track rules, not just the engine. Cup cars use a large, 358-cubic-inch naturally aspirated, fuel-injected V8, and NASCAR manages its output through the full racing package.

How much horsepower do NASCAR Cup engines make?

NASCAR’s October 8, 2025 announcement set a 750-hp target for the 2026 Cup Series at road courses and ovals shorter than 1.5 miles, up from the 670-hp baseline in the other applicable configuration. NASCAR’s Next Gen specification sheet explicitly says horsepower is determined by track type and size, so neither number should be treated as a universal figure for every Cup event—or for every NASCAR series. NASCAR’s 2026 horsepower announcement describes the target and its initial application.

The announcement included road courses and selected short ovals in the higher-output group. NASCAR’s November 14 technical update clarified that those events use the short-track/road-course package, including a three-inch rear spoiler and fewer diffuser strakes. It also moved Bristol, Darlington, Dover, Nashville and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway from the intermediate package to that configuration. Because event packages can change, check NASCAR’s current rules or event information for the configuration at a particular race rather than assuming the 750-hp target applies there. NASCAR’s technical update sets out those package details.

What makes a NASCAR Cup engine powerful?

Large displacement

The Next Gen specification sheet lists a 358-cubic-inch engine. Displacement is the combined volume swept by the pistons as they move through the cylinders; a large displacement gives an engine the capacity to move a substantial amount of air and fuel. NASCAR also lists the Cup engine as naturally aspirated and fuel-injected. NASCAR’s Next Gen specification sheet provides those core specifications.

Natural aspiration and airflow

Naturally aspirated means the engine draws in air without a turbocharger or supercharger forcing it in. The 2026 horsepower increase comes from changing how much air can enter: NASCAR says a larger tapered spacer above the intake manifold improves airflow and supports the 750-hp target. In plain terms, the spacer is part of the regulated intake setup, and enlarging it lets the engine breathe more freely under that rules package. The result is not simply a matter of fitting a different engine; NASCAR sets the configuration for the track.

Fuel injection and manufacturer-specific design

Fuel injection meters fuel into the engine rather than relying on a carburetor. NASCAR’s specification sheet identifies fuel injection as a Next Gen feature. For a specific manufacturer example, Roush Yates Engines describes Ford’s FR9 EFI V8, supplied for Ford Cup teams, as naturally aspirated and port-injected, with a 12.0:1 compression ratio. That is a Ford engine-builder specification, not evidence that every manufacturer’s Cup engine shares the same compression ratio or every internal detail. Roush Yates’ NASCAR Cup Series page gives the Ford-specific information.

Why doesn’t NASCAR simply raise horsepower further?

More output brings engineering and racing trade-offs. NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer John Probst said officials chose 750 hp because they believed teams could reach it without redesigning internal engine parts. He warned that pushing beyond that level would mean shorter engine life and that inefficiencies appear quickly as engines are pushed harder. NASCAR also cited durability testing, development cost and the need to preserve the overall racing package.

Power is only one part of how a car performs on track. NASCAR discusses it alongside downforce, drag and tire wear; increased power also raises demands on throttle control and tire management. The 2026 change therefore pairs engine output with aerodynamic rules rather than treating horsepower as an isolated target.

What the horsepower figures do—and don’t—tell you

  • 670 hp is the baseline for the other applicable 2026 Cup configuration described in NASCAR’s announcement, not a figure for every track.
  • 750 hp is the target for the designated road-course and sub-1.5-mile-oval configuration, not a universal Cup or NASCAR-wide rating.
  • NASCAR has said higher horsepower at larger ovals is a possibility to assess later, not a commitment. The initial expansion discussion excludes superspeedway-style tracks.
  • The available specifications do not establish a current maximum RPM or one complete set of shared internal-engine specifications for every manufacturer.

The headline number is best understood as the output target of a particular rules package. The engine’s displacement and intake design help produce power, while NASCAR’s track-specific restrictions, reliability requirements and aero rules determine how that power is used in competition.
