The smallest clearly documented V8 in this group is the Lamborghini Urraco P200’s 1,994 cc engine—just under two liters. Lamborghini says it produced 182 CV and that 71 P200s were sold between 1975 and 1977. But the available evidence does not establish a definitive global top ten: it names candidates without consistently verifying their exact variants, production status or displacement. The examples below are therefore a sourced guide, not a strict ranking of the ten smallest V8s ever built.
What counts as a production-car V8?
Here, “production car” means a road-going series-production model, including limited-run road cars. Racing-only engines, prototypes and one-off conversions are excluded. A model’s place on a list can change depending on whether limited-series cars count and whether rounded engine labels are treated as exact displacements.
The candidates below come from a 2023 Jalopnik article that lists eleven engines, rather than a consistently documented top ten. Its claims are useful for identifying examples, but the available sources do not independently establish every entry. Where the accessible evidence is secondary or incomplete, that limitation is stated rather than turning the candidate into a verified record-holder.
Small-displacement V8 candidates
| Candidate | Reported displacement | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Fiat 8V | 2.0 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik reports 104 hp and 114 cars made over a two-year production run. Those figures were not independently confirmed here. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Ferrari 208 | 2.0 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik reports 168 hp initially and 218 hp for a later turbocharged version, but the exact 208 variant, displacement and years are not established by an accessible primary source. Ferrari’s linked 208 GTB page was blocked by bot verification. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Lamborghini Urraco P200 | 1,994 cc | Lamborghini’s official history gives 182 CV, says the P200 was intended for the Italian market, and records 71 units sold from 1975 to 1977. It distinguishes the P200 from the larger P250 and P300. Automobili Lamborghini, Urraco history. |
| Ford 2.2-liter Flathead V8 | 2.2 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik identifies a 60-hp version introduced in 1937 and says it appeared in French and British Ford models before being replaced by a 226-cubic-inch inline-six in 1941. These details are secondary-source claims. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Daimler V8 | 2.5 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik credits Edward Turner and Jack Wickes and describes use in Daimler sedans and Jaguar sports cars. The linked Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust page was unavailable, so those details are not independently confirmed here. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Tatra 603 V8 | 2.5 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik describes an overhead-valve V8 with hemispherical heads and 99 hp. Its stated production dates contain a likely typographical error, so the years are not repeated as settled fact. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Jaguar 3.2-liter AJ-V8 | 3.2 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik associates it with the X308 XJ and reports 240 hp, but its market-availability claim is not independently established by an accessible Jaguar heritage source. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Ford Taurus SHO V8 | 3.4 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik reports a Ford/Yamaha-developed engine based on Ford’s 2.5-liter Duratec V6 and output of 235 hp. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Buick/Rover V8 | 3,528 cc for the initial Rover version | RoverV8.net gives 3,528 cc and identifies the 1965 Rover P5B as its first Rover application. The site says its reference text was supplied by Wikipedia, so this is not manufacturer documentation. RoverV8.net, “Specs – Rover V8”. |
| BMW M62B35 | 3.5 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik identifies applications in the E38 735i and E39 5 Series, and calls it the smallest V8 offered in that 7 Series range at the time. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
| Ford/Jaguar AJ35 | 3.9 L, as reported by Jalopnik | Jalopnik reports use in the 11th-generation Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln LS, with 252 hp for 2000–2002 and 280 hp for 2003–2005. It is the source article’s eleventh entry, which illustrates why a cutoff at ten is not self-evident. Jalopnik, June 22, 2023. |
Why the Urraco P200 is the standout
Among these candidates, the P200 has the strongest directly accessible manufacturer documentation and the smallest exact displacement stated in that documentation: 1,994 cc. Calling it a “two-liter V8” is convenient shorthand, not the exact figure. Lamborghini describes the smaller engine as suited to the economic climate and says the P200 was intended for Italy’s market. Its 71-unit sales total applies to the P200 from 1975 to 1977, not to the broader Urraco family. Lamborghini’s Urraco history.

The P200’s figures should not be confused with those of other Urracos: Lamborghini identifies the P250 as a 2.5-liter model and the P300 as displacing 2,996 cc. A shared model family does not mean a shared engine displacement.
Why engine labels do not settle a ranking
Rounded names can hide meaningful differences
“Two-liter” does not necessarily mean exactly 2,000 cc. The P200 is 1,994 cc, while the Fiat 8V and Ferrari 208 are described only as 2.0-liter candidates in the secondary list. Without exact, variant-specific figures, they cannot be reliably ordered against the Lamborghini.

A familiar badge may cover different displacements
The Rover V8 reference lists the initial Rover version at 3,528 cc. It gives 3,946 cc for a later version commonly labeled 3.9 or 4.0. Those names are not interchangeable with the initial engine’s exact displacement. RoverV8.net’s technical reference.
“Smallest ever” depends on inclusion rules
A verified all-time ranking would need consistent documentation for each engine variant, plus a clear rule for limited-production road cars, market-specific versions, rounded displacements and ties. The candidate list includes an eleventh engine, the 3.9-liter AJ35, despite its top-ten framing. It is better read as a collection of reported examples than as proof that no smaller production-car V8 exists.

How these engines compare with later V8s
The candidates span a wide range, but even Porsche’s later historical context shows that a production V8 need not be especially small: Porsche says the 928 launched in 1977 with a 4.5-liter V8. That is useful perspective, not evidence that the candidate list exhausts smaller engines. Porsche Newsroom, “The eight-cylinder V-engines from Porsche,” December 7, 2016.
