Its name points to that historic car; “1 of 1” identifies the Chiron as a one-off commission, not a standard production trim.
What is the Bugatti Chiron ‘55 1 of 1’?
Bugatti introduced the car in a May 23, 2024 account as a customer commission developed with its Sur Mesure team and a partner in Dubai. Sur Mesure is Bugatti’s bespoke individualization program; in this case, it shaped a Chiron Super Sport around a specific historical reference rather than offering a numbered factory edition.
The tribute takes its cue from Jean Bugatti’s Type 55. Bugatti describes the Type 55 as the first Super Sport in the marque’s history and as a blueprint for later cars in the line. That “first” designation is Bugatti’s own historical characterization.
Why is it called ‘55 1 of 1’?
“55” refers to the Type 55 Super Sport, while “1 of 1” signals that this particular Sur Mesure Chiron was commissioned as a unique car. Bugatti’s release does not identify the customer or state a price.

How does the Chiron reinterpret the Type 55?
The modern car carries forward the Type 55’s black-and-yellow two-tone idea through bespoke paintwork, graphics and cabin details. Bugatti’s account describes these design elements:
- A black centerline running over the body.
- A hand-applied ‘55’ graphic that fades across the surface above the headlights and over the front fenders.
- Black ten-spoke wheels with yellow EB center caps.
- An inscription on the rear wing.
- Bespoke embroidery and stitching inside the cabin.
Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, said the fading graphic required a long, intricate process because it had to disappear gradually across the Chiron’s surface. He described the connection behind the project this way: “Even 100 years after his time, we have remained totally connected to Jean and his designs”.

What was the Bugatti Type 55 Super Sport?
The Type 55 was a Jean Bugatti-era sports car whose engine was derived from Bugatti’s Type 51 racer. In its May 2024 account, Bugatti reports a 2.3-liter straight-eight engine, 38 examples built and a top speed of 180 km/h. Those figures are manufacturer-reported, not independently corroborated here. Bugatti’s Jascha Straub remarked: “Imagine, almost 100 years ago, the Type 55 was able to reach 180 km/h.”
The Type 55 and the Chiron ‘55 1 of 1’ belong to very different eras and serve different purposes: the former was a road-adapted car drawing on Grand Prix racing, while the latter is a bespoke modern hypercar. The tribute connects them through design and Bugatti’s interpretation of its own history, not through equivalent technical roles.

What is known about the modern car’s specifications?
Bugatti’s cited account identifies the commission as a Chiron Super Sport and explains its design, but does not give performance figures, a build date, or a price for this individual car. The Type 55’s reported 180 km/h top speed should not be mistaken for a specification of the Chiron tribute.
