Its listed dimensions are 54 inches long and 39 inches wide. That is not a universal ranking of every roadworthy vehicle, however. Guinness records a smaller one-off car in a separate category, and street legality depends on the exact vehicle and the rules where it is registered and driven.
What is the smallest street-legal car in the world?
For a production car, the best-supported answer is the historic Peel P50. Peel Engineering calls it the world’s smallest production car and says it was road-legal in the UK. The manufacturer lists the original three-wheeler at 54 inches (1,372 mm) long, 39 inches (991 mm) wide, and 59 kg (130 lb). Peel Engineering’s P50 information does not state when those specifications were published.
That answer needs two limits. First, “street-legal” is not a single worldwide certification: a vehicle’s approval, registration, and permitted roads vary by country and by model. Second, “smallest” depends on the category. The Peel P50 is the production-car answer, not the winner of every record involving tiny roadworthy vehicles.
How the Peel P50 compares with other tiny-car records
These records describe different things, so their figures should not be treated as one global ranking. Length, width, and height are separate measures; a narrowest-car record does not establish the smallest overall car.

| Vehicle or record | Category | Dimensions | Road-use qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historic Peel P50 | Production car, according to Peel Engineering | 54 in (1,372 mm) long; 39 in (991 mm) wide; 59 kg (130 lb) | Peel Engineering says the original three-wheeler was road-legal in the UK. The source does not provide a universal approval claim. |
| Austin Coulson’s car | Guinness World Records’ “smallest roadworthy non-production car” | 126.47 cm long; 65.41 cm wide; 63.5 cm high | Guinness says it was licensed for roads with a 40 km/h (25 mph) speed limit. It was measured on 7 September 2012. Guinness World Records’ record page |
| Marazzi’s car | Guinness World Records’ “narrowest driveable car” | 50.20 cm wide | The record was achieved on 21 June 2025. It is a width record, not a smallest-production-car or universal street-legality record. Guinness World Records’ record page |
Coulson’s one-off is shorter and narrower than the Peel P50, but it is not a production model; Guinness classifies it separately. Marazzi’s record concerns width alone. Neither changes the production-car distinction Peel Engineering makes for the P50.
Which Peel P50 does “street-legal” refer to?
The original UK three-wheeler
The historic P50 was a three-wheeled production car. Peel Engineering says it was road-legal in the UK and lists the original dimensions and weight above. That manufacturer statement is specific to the historic model and UK context; it should not be read as proof that every P50, in every condition, can be registered or driven on every public road today.

The modern US-market P50
The modern Peel P50 Cabrio is a different vehicle: its maker describes it as a four-wheeler and lists it at 54 inches long and 41 inches wide. Peel 50’s current model information says its modern P50 and Trident qualify as low-speed vehicles for public roads posted at 35 mph or below, and are not permitted on highways, freeways, or high-speed roads. It lists both models as limited to 25 mph; the P50 is a single-seater and the Trident a two-seater. These are the maker’s claims about its modern US-market vehicles, not a rule that applies to all small cars or jurisdictions.
Why legality depends on where and how the vehicle is used
A vehicle can be described as road-legal by its maker and still face different approval, registration, equipment, and road-access requirements in a particular place. Peel Engineering’s claim about the original P50 concerns UK road legality; Peel 50’s description of its modern models concerns US low-speed vehicle use. Those claims are not interchangeable.

In the EU, Regulation (EU) No 168/2013 establishes approval and market-surveillance rules for two- or three-wheel vehicles and quadricycles, including technical L-category classifications. Those classifications provide a regulatory framework; they do not, by themselves, establish a vehicle’s registration status or permitted roads in the United States or worldwide.
Before treating a tiny vehicle as street-legal for a specific purchase or trip, verify the exact model and configuration with the relevant registration authority and check local limits on public-road access. The model name alone is not enough to establish where it can be driven.

What the records do—and do not—establish
- Smallest production car: Peel Engineering identifies the historic P50 as the world’s smallest production car.
- Smallest roadworthy non-production car: Guinness assigns this separate record to Austin Coulson’s measured 2012 one-off.
- Narrowest driveable car: Guinness lists Marazzi’s 50.20 cm-wide vehicle for a record achieved in 2025; that does not determine overall size.
The available records and maker specifications do not establish a complete worldwide inventory of every tiny vehicle that is road-legal in every jurisdiction. The defensible conclusion is therefore category-specific: the Peel P50 is the production-car answer, while a universal smallest street-legal vehicle across all vehicle types and laws is not established by these records.
