The “most buyers don’t consider” hook is not backed by buyer-survey evidence; the more useful question is whether the X1’s size, trim choices and pricing match what you need.
Where the X1 fits in BMW’s SUV lineup
BMW identifies the X1 as its most compact SUV. The company’s current U.S. 2027 model page lists it at 177.2 inches long, 72.6 inches wide excluding mirrors and 64.6 inches high. BMW’s general lineup page instead gives an X1 length of 175.5 inches and up to 58.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity, without specifying a model year. BMW’s pages do not explain the difference, so treat 177.2 inches as the 2027 specification and the shorter figure as the separate lineup-page number. The X1’s conventional SUV shape makes it the practical starting point for someone who wants a small BMW with five seats. If you want more interior space and power, the X3 is the next BMW to consider: BMW lists 255 hp for the 2027 X3 30 xDrive, compared with 241 hp for the X1 xDrive28i. The X2 is the coupe-styled alternative, rather than simply another version of the X1’s more traditional profile.
What the 2027 X1 offers
xDrive28i
BMW lists the 2027 xDrive28i with a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine, 241 hp and xDrive all-wheel drive. For shoppers who want the smaller model without stepping up to the higher-output trim, this is the baseline powertrain described on BMW’s current U.S. page.

M35i
The 2027 M35i is listed at 312 hp. BMW gives it a preliminary 0–60 mph time of 5.2 seconds and says the figure is for comparison only: “These results should be used for comparison only and verification should not be attempted on public roads.” BMW’s page describes its acceleration numbers as preliminary results, so do not treat them as a promise of a particular real-world run. Model year matters when comparing power figures. An Associated Press comparison supplied by Edmunds reported 341 hp for the 2025 M35i, while BMW lists 312 hp for the 2027 model. Those are figures for different model years and sources, not interchangeable specifications.

Space, efficiency and price: what the published figures say
For the 2026 model year, Car and Driver lists five seats, AWD and an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy range of 27–28 mpg. That range is review data for the 2026 X1, not a guarantee for every configuration or a later model year. (Car and Driver’s 2026 BMW X1 review)
A separate comparison published July 30, 2025, by the Associated Press and supplied by Edmunds gives useful context for the 2025 xDrive28i, but it should not be mistaken for current pricing or specifications:

How to decide whether the X1 suits you
- Start with your space needs. Compare the X1’s dimensions and cargo layout with what you routinely carry. If you need more room than a subcompact SUV provides, look at the X3 or alternatives in a larger class.
- Choose by powertrain, not badge alone. The xDrive28i and M35i have different output, and the 2025 and 2027 M35i figures cited above differ by model year. Verify the exact model year and trim when comparing listings.
- Factor in AWD and efficiency. The cited 2027 xDrive28i specification includes AWD. The 27–28 mpg combined range is Car and Driver’s 2026-model-year figure, so check the EPA label for the specific vehicle you are considering.
- Drive it on the roads you use. Comfort and ride character are subjective and can depend on trim and equipment. A test drive can tell you more than a performance number about whether it feels right for your commute.
- Compare actual transaction details. The $42,525 figure is a destination-included 2025 starting price from a July 2025 comparison, not a current quote. Check current local inventory, equipment and dealer pricing directly.
Which alternatives deserve a look?
BMW X3
Consider the X3 if you want more interior space and are willing to move up within BMW’s lineup. BMW’s current page gives the 2027 X3 30 xDrive 255 hp, 14 hp more than the 2027 X1 xDrive28i.

BMW X2
Look at the X2 if its coupe-SUV styling appeals more than the X1’s conventional SUV silhouette. Compare the seating, cargo access and equipment on the specific versions you are considering rather than assuming the models are interchangeable.
Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3
Car and Driver lists the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 among alternatives in the subcompact luxury SUV segment. They are useful cross-shopping options if you are comparing the X1 with other compact premium SUVs. (Car and Driver’s 2026 review)

Acura ADX: a prior-model-year price comparison
The Associated Press/Edmunds comparison of 2025 models lists the Acura ADX starting at $36,350 including destination, versus $42,525 for the X1. In that comparison, the X1 had more power and standard AWD, while the ADX’s lower starting price was an advantage. The X1 makes sense to shortlist if you want BMW’s smallest SUV, a five-seat layout and AWD, but do not need the extra space of an X3. The main decision is whether the X1’s size and standard xDrive28i configuration are enough, or whether the added output of the M35i—or a different vehicle’s price, space or ride—better fits your priorities.
