A reliable, complete ranking of the 10 smallest American-made cars cannot be established from the available published measurements. The evidence does support a clear rule and several useful examples: count cars assembled in the United States, compare overall length for a named model year and body style, and treat historical “shortest” claims as claims from their own time—not as all-time records.
What counts as an American-made car?
For this list, “American-made” means assembled in the United States. A car’s U.S. brand, American design, or American-market sales do not establish where it was built. That distinction matters especially for small cars, whose production was sometimes contracted overseas.
Length is the comparison measure: overall length in inches, tied to a specific model year and body style. Dimensions can change across a model’s run, so a number for one year should not be applied to every version.
Why there isn’t a defensible top ten here
The sources establish scattered examples and historical claims, not a consistent dataset of ten U.S.-assembled cars measured on the same basis. A ranked top ten would require confirming both the assembly location and the model-year/body-style dimensions for every candidate. Without that, ordering ten entries would imply a level of certainty the evidence does not support.

Scope also changes the result. Tiny one- or two-seat microcars, kit-built cars, vehicles with unusual road-registration status, three-wheelers, utility vehicles, and commercial derivatives do not necessarily belong in a list of passenger cars. A broad microcar length roundup, for example, includes three-wheelers and a mini-truck and is not a verified U.S.-assembly ranking. [Lane Motor Museum collection]
Small American-built examples with sourced dimensions
| Vehicle | Published length | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1974 AMC Gremlin | 170 inches overall | Savoy Automobile Museum gives this length for its 1974 Gremlin exhibit; it should not be generalized to other Gremlin years. [Savoy Automobile Museum] |
| King Midget, model year not specified in the cited event account | 141 inches | A 1977 U.S. Department of Transportation/NHTSA publication called it the shortest car at the auto show covered by that issue. This is an event-specific description, not an all-time ranking. [National Transportation Library] |
The King Midget figure needs particular care: a separate reference result reports 102 inches, but the difference is not reconciled by the available evidence. The 141-inch government-publication figure is therefore best reported only with its original 1977 auto-show context, not treated as a settled universal dimension.

Historical “shortest” claims are not all-time records
In a letter dated July 9, 1965, to Congressman Jonathan B. Bingham, American Motors Corporation said, “Our Rambler American is the shortest U.S.-built car.” The letter appears in the Congressional Record. It documents AMC’s claim at that point in time; it does not establish that the Rambler American was the shortest car ever built in the United States. [Congressional Record, July 9, 1965]
The EPA’s historical technical report is another reason to compare exact model years: domestic subcompact lengths changed over time. A category label such as “subcompact” is not a substitute for a vehicle’s measured overall length. [EPA historical technical report]

Why the Metropolitan is excluded
The Nash/AMC Metropolitan is often remembered as a tiny American-market car, but it does not meet a U.S.-assembly rule. A Savoy Automobile Museum page gives an overall length of 149 inches for its 1959 Metropolitan exhibit and says production began in England in October 1953. [Savoy Automobile Museum]
The Congressional Record reproduces an AMC letter stating that Austin made the Metropolitan in England to AMC’s specifications; the museum also identifies its English production. The car’s American branding and market do not make it American-assembled. [Congressional Record, July 9, 1965]

How to read a future ranked list
A credible “10 smallest” ranking should show, for every entry, the model year, body style, published overall length, source, and evidence of U.S. assembly. It should state whether it includes microcars, kits, and vehicles with atypical road-use or registration status. Until those details are established consistently, the named examples above are useful reference points—not a complete ranking.
