What years are the sixth-generation Mustang?
The S550 is commonly identified with the 2015–2023 model years. Ford’s 2015 U.S. launch materials establish the start of the generation; a 2024 MustangForums retrospective identifies its span as 2015–2023. The dates describe model years, not a verified production-end date. Ford’s April 2014 2015 Mustang sourcebook and the 2024 MustangForums retrospective provide those respective points of reference.
What does S550 mean?
S550 is the name commonly used for this Mustang generation. It is often paired with “sixth generation” when discussing the 2015–2023 era. The name identifies the generation, not a specific engine, trim, or body style.
What changed with the 2015 Mustang?
Ford’s April 2014 U.S. sourcebook presented the 2015 car as a contemporary redesign that remained recognizable as a Mustang. Its changes are clearest across three areas: the engine lineup, chassis, and cabin technology. The sourcebook is a launch-era snapshot, so its equipment details should not be read as applying to every later S550 or every market.

Three engine identities in one lineup
The 2015 U.S. lineup paired familiar Mustang engine choices with a new turbocharged option: a 3.7-liter V6, a 5.0-liter V8, and a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four. The EcoBoost gave the range a turbocharged four-cylinder alternative without displacing the V6 and V8 identities at launch. Ford listed fastback and convertible configurations across several trims; availability depended on configuration. Ford’s 2015 sourcebook is the reference for these launch-year U.S. offerings.
Independent suspension and selectable driving features
Independent front and rear suspension was a headline chassis change. Ford also listed selectable drive modes, a GT Performance Package, and launch control and line-lock for track use. These features widened the car’s range of driving and performance options; they were not all standard on every Mustang. The sourcebook advises checking ordering information for availability.

More cabin and driver-assistance technology
The 2015 launch materials list SYNC and SYNC with MyFord Touch, as well as available equipment including adaptive cruise control, collision warning with brake support, and BLIS blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert. Other listed options included rain-sensing wipers, Intelligent Access, and heated and cooled front seats. These are launch-era U.S. availability statements, not a claim that all cars received the features as standard equipment.
How the S550 balanced tradition and technology
The S550 is best understood as a combination of continuity and change, rather than a simple shift from old to new. Its V6 and V8 options maintained familiar engine choices, while the EcoBoost four-cylinder expanded the lineup. At the same time, independent suspension, selectable driving features, updated infotainment, and available driver assistance brought the platform and cabin into a more contemporary era.

That balance depended on the individual car. Engine, trim, body style, market, and model year all affect what equipment a Mustang had. Ford’s 2015 sourcebook is useful for understanding the launch lineup, but it does not document every later year’s changes.
The S550’s place in the Mustang’s global story
A 2024 MustangForums retrospective describes the S550 as the first factory right-hand-drive Mustang and connects it with Ford’s international-market strategy. This account adds a global dimension to the generation’s modernization, but it is secondary context rather than a retrieved Ford history statement. The retrospective is the source for that description.

How the next generation followed the S550
Ford’s 2022 announcement of the next-generation Mustang emphasized a digital cockpit, connected technology, and revised design. It helps illustrate the direction of the chapter that followed the S550, but it does not provide a complete year-by-year record of S550 equipment changes or establish a precise final-production date. Ford’s 2022 next-generation announcement is the source for that successor-generation framing.
