The RX 450h is the stronger match if you want the larger midsize RX rather than a compact SUV. Its model-year specifications pair 308 combined system horsepower with an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined. Those figures come from Lexus USA’s August 26, 2020 announcement for the 2021 RX; they describe the model, not the condition or performance of any particular used example.
Lexus also said blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert became standard across all RX 450h grades for 2021. Confirm the equipment on the vehicle you are considering rather than relying only on a listing or model-year description.
When the smaller 2021 NX 300h makes more sense
If you would rather have a compact SUV and put greater weight on fuel economy, consider the 2021 Lexus NX 300h. Lexus USA reported 194 combined system horsepower, 33 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined in its July 24, 2020 model-year announcement. The announcement also describes electronic on-demand AWD-i and says blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert became standard for 2021.

How to interpret Lexus reliability survey figures
Lexus Europe reported in 2022 that almost 25,000 UK owners participated in a What Car? reliability survey and that Lexus received a 98.4 percent overall reliability score. The release also reported a 99 percent score for the UX 250h—not the RX 450h. These are historical UK survey results, not a U.S. prediction for a particular used vehicle.
In that release, Lexus Europe attributed the statement “There isn’t an unreliable model in the entire Lexus line-up” to What Car? The same release quoted What Car? editor Steve Huntingford saying, “That means whether you choose a premium priced or affordable model, you can expect the most exemplary standard of reliability.” Both are brand-level comments reported in the context of the UK survey, not guarantees about an individual RX 450h or NX 300h.
