The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS gets a substantial manufacturer-announced overhaul: a standard three-screen MBUX Superscreen, updated engines, cloud-connected suspension control, and new DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps. The U.S. lineup announced by Mercedes-Benz includes the six-cylinder GLS 450 4MATIC and V8-powered GLS 580 4MATIC. Pricing, U.S. on-sale timing, and independent test results were not included in the company’s March 31, 2026 announcement.
What changed on the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS?
Mercedes-Benz calls the GLS the “S-Class of SUVs,” describing it as a large, three-row luxury SUV. For 2027, the company’s U.S. announcement centers on changes to the powertrains, cabin technology, ride-control systems, lighting, and exterior design. These are manufacturer-announced updates, not findings from an independent road test.
- Cabin: The MBUX Superscreen, made up of three 12.3-inch displays beneath one glass surface, is standard.
- Software: MB.OS integrates vehicle functions and supports over-the-air updates.
- Ride: AIRMATIC with cloud-based damper regulation is standard; E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL is optional on the GLS 580 4MATIC.
- Lighting: The latest DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps are standard.
- Engines: The GLS 450 retains a 3.0-liter inline-six with revised components, while the GLS 580’s 4.0-liter V8 gains a flat-plane crankshaft and higher output.
- Design: The front end, grille, lighting signatures, paint choices, and wheel designs are revised.
2027 GLS 450 vs. GLS 580: engines and performance
Mercedes-Benz lists two versions for the U.S. market. The figures below are company-published specifications and estimates from its March 31, 2026 announcement, not independent measurements.

Mercedes says the GLS 450’s inline-six receives a more powerful electric auxiliary compressor, revised cylinder-head intake and exhaust ports, and a modified intake camshaft. The GLS 580’s V8 changes from a cross-plane to a flat-plane crankshaft. Mercedes lists the prior GLS 580 at 510 hp and 538 lb-ft, so the announced 2027 figures represent increases of 20 hp and 15 lb-ft.

Both engines use an integrated starter generator and a 48-volt electrical system. Mercedes describes coasting, boost, and recuperation functions; the announcement describes mild-hybrid assistance, not a plug-in hybrid system or electric-only driving capability. Both U.S. models are listed with 4MATIC fully variable all-wheel drive, which Mercedes describes as Torque on Demand.
The announcement does not supply U.S. fuel-economy figures or independent acceleration results. Buyers comparing the two should treat the acceleration numbers as Mercedes-Benz estimates, not as a head-to-head test.

How the ride, driver assistance, and lighting change
AIRMATIC and cloud-based damper regulation
Mercedes-Benz says AIRMATIC air suspension with cloud-based damper regulation is standard. The system can use Car-to-X information from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles to adjust damping ahead of certain bumps. According to the company, the information is transmitted in real time through the Mercedes-Benz Cloud and anonymized. The release notes that Car-to-X operation requires a Mercedes me connect account and can be deactivated.
Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL
E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL is listed as an option for the GLS 580 4MATIC. Mercedes says its control units analyze the driving situation 1,000 times per second. That is the manufacturer’s description of the system; it does not, by itself, establish how the SUV will ride in independent testing.

DIGITAL LIGHT and sensor suite
The latest DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps are standard. Mercedes says the light field is larger and the lighting module uses up to 50 percent less energy than the previous generation. The “up to” figure is the company’s comparison, not an independently verified efficiency result.
The announcement also describes a driver-assistance sensor suite with ten exterior cameras, up to five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. Sensor counts and equipment descriptions are not safety ratings, and the U.S. announcement does not provide an independent safety assessment.

Exterior and cabin: new design, screens, and seating
Exterior details
The 2027 GLS gets a larger grille with chrome framing and contour lighting, a standing hood star, a redesigned front bumper, and star-inspired designs in the headlamps and taillamps. Mercedes lists Dark Petrol and MANUFAKTUR Patagonia Red Metallic among the new paint finishes, along with additional wheel designs. An illuminated hood star is optional, with availability dependent on market or configuration.
Superscreen, MB.OS, and navigation
The standard MBUX Superscreen places three 12.3-inch displays under a single glass surface across the cabin. MB.OS integrates vehicle functions and enables over-the-air software updates. MBUX Navigation combines Google Maps technology with the Mercedes-Benz interface.

For rear passengers, an optional entertainment package adds two 11.6-inch displays. The optional Executive Rear Seat Package Plus includes items such as multi-contour massage seats, remote controls, and electric sun blinds. Package contents and availability should be checked against the final U.S. market configuration.
Three rows and exterior dimensions
Mercedes-Benz says the GLS has three power-adjustable seat rows and accommodates six or seven occupants, depending on configuration. It lists the vehicle at 205 inches long with a 123.4-inch wheelbase. The company says the third row can accommodate passengers up to 6 feet 4 inches tall; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of comfort for every passenger or seating position.
What the announcement does not establish
Mercedes-Benz’s March 31, 2026 U.S. announcement is a source for the company’s stated features and specifications, but it is not an order guide, pricing notice, road test, or safety assessment. It does not state U.S. pricing or on-sale timing, and it provides no independent performance or fuel-economy results.
