The Road Ahead: Skills for a Successful Career in Automotive Engineering

Automotive engineering careers combine engineering fundamentals with role-specific skills in areas such as software, electrification, manufacturing, testing, and cybersecurity.

A successful automotive engineering career starts with strong engineering fundamentals, then adds technical depth in a chosen area—such as vehicle design, manufacturing, software, electrification, testing, or cybersecurity. There is no single ranked checklist for every role: the right skills depend on the work, vehicle systems, employer, and region. Analytical problem-solving, clear communication, and collaboration help engineers apply those skills across complex teams.

Why automotive engineering skills are changing

Electrification and digitalization are changing the work of automotive engineers. In a January 13, 2026 release, ACEA and the Adecco Group identified rising demand for software engineering, battery technology, and advanced data analytics. Their analysis projects a marked shift toward high-skilled engineering, IT, and management roles in Europe’s automotive sector by 2035. It also notes that some medium- and lower-skilled work may face structural decline even as employers encounter near-term shortages from replacement needs and an aging workforce. These are Europe-specific findings, not a global forecast or a guarantee of openings for individual graduates. ACEA and Adecco Group workforce release

The scale of the sector helps explain why workforce shifts matter, but does not predict any one person’s job prospects: ACEA reports 13.6 million Europeans work in the automotive sector, representing 8.1% of all EU manufacturing jobs. It also reports €84.6 billion in annual automotive R&D spending, equal to 34% of the EU total. ACEA and Adecco Group workforce release

Vehicles are also becoming more software-centric and cloud-connected, affecting development tools, processes, supply chains, and the skills teams need. SAE’s 2024 report describes this transition; it does not imply that every automotive engineer needs to become a software specialist. SAE report on software-defined vehicles

Build a strong engineering foundation

Digital vehicle technology adds to—not replaces—the fundamentals. Mathematics, physics, mechanics, materials, design, testing, manufacturing processes, and disciplined problem-solving underpin work across the industry. The depth required varies: a vehicle-dynamics engineer and a production engineer, for example, use different combinations of these skills. BYU–Idaho’s 2026 career overview names mathematics, CAD, fluid and thermal mechanics, and manufacturing processes among the technical foundations for automotive engineering. BYU–Idaho career overview

  • Mathematics and physics: use them to understand forces, motion, energy, heat, and engineering models.
  • Mechanical and materials knowledge: apply them to components, structures, durability, and performance.
  • Design and CAD: develop and communicate designs; the specific tools depend on the employer and role.
  • Manufacturing and quality: understand how parts and systems can be produced, tested, and improved.

Choose digital skills that fit your specialty

Software, electronics, data analysis, controls, and connected systems matter increasingly as vehicles gain digital functions. Battery technology is another growing area identified in ACEA and Adecco Group’s European workforce analysis. The practical goal is not to master every language, data tool, or automated-driving method; it is to build the digital fluency needed for the work you want to do. JSAE’s Software-Defined Vehicle Skills Standard separates general software and automotive knowledge from skills tied to particular functions. Its framework covers 31 job types, including specialist, in-car, cloud, UX/SDV, support, and management roles. That range is a reminder that “automotive software engineer” is not one uniform job. JSAE SDV Skills Standard

  • Mechanical or vehicle systems: deepen mechanics, design, simulation, testing, or powertrain knowledge relevant to your target role.
  • Electrical and electronics: focus on the hardware and control systems used by the vehicle or subsystem you want to work on.
  • Software and data: develop coding, software testing, data analysis, or connected-system skills according to the job’s actual requirements.
  • Electrification: prioritize battery and electric-powertrain knowledge when those technologies are central to the role.
  • Manufacturing or materials: build expertise in processes, production systems, materials, and quality where those are core responsibilities.

Learn systems thinking, safety, and cybersecurity

A vehicle is an integrated system: hardware, software, communications, safety requirements, and manufacturing choices interact. SAE’s systems-engineering report explains why growing complexity and integration call for systems approaches across vehicle development. Engineers benefit from understanding how a change in one component or function can affect other teams and stages of the product lifecycle. SAE report on automotive systems engineering

For engineers specializing in vehicle cybersecurity, SAE J3061_202112 is a recommended practice with lifecycle guidance spanning concept, production, operation, service, and decommissioning. It addresses threat analysis and modeling, vulnerability analysis, vehicle-level considerations, and security testing. Familiarity with a guidebook can inform role-specific work; reading it alone does not confer certification. SAE J3061_202112

Make communication and learning part of the technical toolkit

Automotive engineering is collaborative work across disciplines. Engineers need to explain technical decisions, coordinate with colleagues, and adapt as requirements and technologies change. These skills do not replace engineering knowledge; they help teams use it effectively. JSAE’s SDV framework explicitly includes human, business, and management skills alongside technical categories. The DRIVES Automotive Skills Agenda Strategy and Roadmap offers European, survey-based evidence rather than a current global ranking. Its comparison of reported demand and educational provision identifies technical knowledge, materials science, and learnability among aligned areas, while describing mechatronics and digital skills as less aligned. Treat those findings as historical and regional context, not a live count of vacancies. DRIVES Strategy and Roadmap

Decide what to develop first

Rather than trying to learn every automotive technology, narrow your target by engineering domain, vehicle focus, and work function. Then compare the role’s actual requirements with your current skills and choose projects or training that address the most relevant gaps.

  1. Choose an engineering domain: mechanical and vehicle systems, electrical and electronics, software and data, manufacturing, or materials.
  2. Choose a vehicle or system focus: combustion, hybrid or electric powertrains, connected and software-defined vehicles, automated systems, safety, or production systems.
  3. Choose a work function: design, simulation, testing and validation, production, quality, systems integration, or cybersecurity.
  4. Check role-specific requirements: compare job descriptions and project expectations for the particular employers and region you are targeting.
  5. Build evidence through relevant work: use coursework, projects, or experience to demonstrate the skills the role calls for, then expand into adjacent areas as your goals develop.

JSAE recommends assessing only the skills relevant to the organization, career, and prior work in question. Its examples describe building experience in programming and software testing before expanding toward systems architecture—a possible progression, not a universal career path. JSAE SDV Skills Standard

Use skills frameworks as guides, not rankings

The DRIVES report lists automotive data analyst, powertrain engineer, and automotive technician among the top three indexed roles in its demand survey. Because the report is based on European project surveys, those results are useful context for what respondents reported, not a current global ranking of job openings. DRIVES Strategy and Roadmap

JSAE’s standard is more role-specific than a generic list: it organizes skills by category and type, including basic technologies, management, human skills, business skills, and laws and standards. Use that structure to identify relevant capabilities rather than treating all 31 job types as one checklist. JSAE SDV Skills Standard
